12 Inches to Centimeters

12 inches is 30.48 centimeters, which is 304.8 millimeters or 0.3048 m. That length is one foot by definition, because the 1959 agreement fixed the foot at 0.3048 m, so 12 x 2.54 = 30.48 with no rounding. In yards that is 0.33333 yd.

12 inches is 30.48 centimeters, which is one foot

12 inches equals 30.48 centimeters, which is 304.8 millimeters or 0.3048 m. Twelve inches is also one foot, and that is not a coincidence: the 1959 international yard agreement fixed the yard at 0.9144 m, so the foot is 0.9144 / 3 = 0.3048 m and the inch is 0.9144 / 36 = 0.0254 m. Twelve of those inches give 12 x 2.54 = 30.48 cm.

NIST Special Publication 811 lists 1 ft = 0.3048 m as a fixed factor (NIST, 2008), and the BIPM SI brochure keeps the underlying metre definition (BIPM, 9th edition, 2019). The third source for this length is the retired US survey foot, which NIST documents separately and which differs by less than a micrometer.

Because 12 in is the foot, this one conversion doubles as the bridge between the two systems: every foot value on a floor plan, a shipping label or a cable spec is a multiple of 30.48 cm.

A 12 inch ruler is 30.48 cm end to end

The school ruler is the clearest picture of this relationship. One edge carries 12 inch marks, the other carries 30 centimeters, and the 12 in end sits 0.48 cm past the 30 cm line. A 30 cm metric ruler is therefore 11.81 in, 1.81 in under a full foot, or 4.6 cm.

The marks between the inches are sixteenths, and each one has a fixed millimeter value. One sixteenth of an inch is 25.4 / 16 = 1.5875 mm, so a sixteenth on the imperial edge never lands on a millimeter mark on the metric edge. That mismatch is why half the pencil lines on a ruler do not line up on the two scales.

12 1/231.75317.5

Worked example: a metric tape reads a pencil line at 30.48 cm and you want that in inches and sixteenths. The inches are 30.48 / 2.54 = 12. The remainder is zero, so the line is the 12 in mark itself. A line at 29.845 cm divides to 11.75 in, which is 11 and 12/16, or 11 and 3/4 in. The two scales agree only through the division, never by eye.

A 12 inch LP record is 30.48 cm across

Vinyl is quoted in inches everywhere, including in metric countries, so a 12 in LP is 30.48 cm from rim to rim on every continent. The edge has a circumference of pi x 30.48 = 95.76 cm, and the playing area has a face of pi x 15.24² = 729.66 cm². The paper sleeve is a little larger than the disc, at 12.375 in per edge, which is 31.43 cm, because 12.375 x 2.54 = 31.4325.

The label and spindle hole come in inches too. The label is 4 in wide, which is 10.16 cm, and the spindle hole is 0.285 in, which is 7.24 mm. Turntables made for the metric market drill the same 7.24 mm hole, because a record pressed to the inch standard has to drop onto a metric spindle without wobble.

Worked example: storage for 30 records. A record is about 3 mm thick, so 30 x 3 = 90 mm, or 9 cm of shelf. Allow for the sleeve thickness and the shelf needs closer to 11 cm, and it has to be at least 31.5 cm deep so the 31.43 cm sleeves do not overhang. The 30.48 cm value is the disc itself, and the 31.43 cm value is what the shelf sees.

At 33.33 rpm a 12 in record makes one turn in 1.8 s, and in that turn the outer edge of the groove travels its 95.76 cm circumference. That is the connection between the diameter in centimeters and the speed the stylus experiences: the rim travels about 53 cm of groove every second of play.

12 by 12 inch tile is 30.48 cm square

A 12 x 12 in floor tile is 30.48 x 30.48 cm, with a face of 929.03 cm², because one square foot is 12 x 12 = 144 in² and 144 x 6.4516 = 929.03 cm². Metric catalogs list the same tile as 30.5 x 30.5 cm, which rounds 30.48 up and quietly grows the tile by 0.02 cm per edge.

Area follows from the square foot. One tile is 1 ft², so 100 tiles span 100 ft², which is 9.29 m² (929.03 cm² x 100 = 92,903 cm²). A carton of 20 tiles spans 20 ft², or 1.86 m².

Worked example: a row of 10 tiles laid edge to edge with 3 mm grout lines. The tiles span 10 x 30.48 = 304.8 cm and the nine grout lines contribute 9 x 0.3 = 2.7 cm, so the row is 307.5 cm. In inches the same row is 120 in of tile plus 9 x 0.118 = 1.06 in of grout, which is 10.09 ft. The grout lines, not the tiles, decide whether the row fits the alcove.

The 12 in grid is why US framing lives on 16 and 24 in centers: both divide 96 in, the sheet length of 243.84 cm, with no cutoff. A metric job set out on 30 or 60 cm centers does not fit the same sheets without trimming, and the waste comes straight off the budget.

Cable, hose and rope measured by the foot

Lengths under about 100 ft are sold in feet in the United States, and the foot is this page in disguise. Every foot of cable, hose, rope or chain is 12 in, which is 30.48 cm, so the relationship is one multiplication no matter the distance.

Worked example: a 25 ft patch cable. That is 25 x 12 = 300 in, or 25 x 30.48 = 762 cm, which is 7.62 m. A 50 ft garden hose is 600 in, or 1,524 cm, which is 15.24 m. Stretch the 50 ft hose across a 15 m lawn and 24 cm of hose is left over, which is why the label length always beats the measured distance by a little.

Long pulls flip the direction of the math. A 100 m cable drum measures 100 m end to end, and 100 / 0.3048 = 328.08 ft, which is 3,937.01 in. Orders written in meters and quoted in feet meet at the same 30.48 cm per foot, and rounding the foot value to 30 cm would understate a 328 ft pull by more than 1.5 m, which is a real gap on a pull between two floors.

Wire and cable catalogs mix the systems on one page: jacket length in feet, bend radius in millimeters. The bend radius never goes through the foot at all, so the two numbers on the spec sheet convert independently and should never be added or compared directly.

Twelve inches from 10 to 14, and the survey foot

The table carries the inch range around one foot. Reading down it, each extra inch adds 2.54 cm without exception, so 13 in is 33.02 cm and 14 in is 35.56 cm.

One footnote: before 2023 the United States also kept a survey foot of 1200/3937 m, and NIST retired it for surveying and mapping work on January 1, 2023. Twelve survey inches come to 30.48006 cm, which is 0.6 micrometers longer than the international 30.48. The difference never shows on a ruler and only mattered across long land lines, where thousands of feet accumulate the error. NIST documents the retirement with the dates and the conversion tables (NIST, 2023).

Mental math for the foot: 2.54 splits into 2.5 plus 0.04, so multiply the inches by 2.5 and then count in 0.04 times the inches. For 12 in: 30 + 0.48 = 30.48 cm. For 9 in: 22.5 + 0.36 = 22.86 cm. Both are correct, and the second step is the one people forget, which is why 30 cm keeps getting quoted for a foot.

Square and cubic feet from a 12 inch cube

Once the length is 12 in, area and capacity come out in square and cubic feet, and those carry their own fixed factors. One square foot is 144 in² or 929.03 cm² (144 x 6.4516). One cubic foot is 1,728 in³ or 28,316.85 cm³, which is 28.32 L or 7.48 gal.

Worked example: a cube 12 in on every edge. It is a 1 ft cube, so it holds 1 ft³ = 28.32 L, which is 28.32 kg of water at room temperature. On a kitchen shelf the same cube is 30.48 cm, and a shelf cut 30 cm deep will not take it. That 4.8 mm is the whole difference between the two unit systems on a shopping trip.

Shipping takes the same cube and divides it into gallons: 28,316.85 cm³ / 3,785.411784 = 7.48 gal. A 12 in cube is therefore a bit more than seven and a half US gallons, which is how aquarium and cooler sizes get quoted in both systems without either number being wrong.
