Add Days to a Date
Adding 90 calendar days is the same as adding 12 weeks and 6 days, or 2,160 hours. Because 90 days is not a whole number of weeks, the result lands six weekdays later than the start. Counted as business days instead, 90 working days spans about 126 calendar days.

How date arithmetic works
Adding days to a date sounds trivial, and most of the time it is. Under the hood, a calendar date is a count of days from a fixed starting point, so adding 30 days is just adding 30 to that count and converting back. A computer can do it instantly.
The complexity appears at the edges. Months have 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. Leap years add a day roughly every four years, except for century years not divisible by 400. Daylight saving time shifts the clock twice a year in most US states but not in Arizona or Hawaii. None of that changes the day count, but it does change what time of day your result falls on if you are working with timestamps rather than plain dates.
That is why counting days beats counting months for anything that matters. Saying 'three months from today' is ambiguous, it could be 89 to 92 days. Saying '90 days from today' is exact, and it is what contracts, return windows and notice periods almost always mean. The ISO 8601 standard exists precisely so that dates and durations have one unambiguous written form; the ISO 8601 overview describes it, and NIST publishes the underlying time and frequency standards the whole system rests on.
Worked example: 90 days from January 15, 2026
Let us walk through a real one. Start date: January 15, 2026. Add 90 days.
- January has 31 days, so from January 15 there are 16 days left in January (31 − 15)
- That leaves 90 − 16 = 74 days to place
- February 2026 has 28 days (2026 is not a leap year), leaving 74 − 28 = 46
- March has 31 days, leaving 46 − 31 = 15
- So the result is April 15, 2026, and 15 lands in April
January 15, 2026 is a Thursday, so April 15, 2026 is a Wednesday. The total is 90 days, which is 12 weeks and 6 days, or 2,160 hours.
Change the start date and the answer moves in a way that surprises people. 90 days from January 1, 2026 is April 1, 2026, because January 1 has 30 days left in January rather than 16. And 90 days from March 1, 2026 is May 30, 2026. Same 90 days, three different calendar answers, which is exactly why 'three months' and '90 days' are not interchangeable.
Common deadlines and what they work out to
Most day-counting questions come from a handful of real-world deadlines. Here is how they map onto calendar days.
| What you are counting | Days | Weeks | Calendar months (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two weeks' notice | 14 | 2 | Half a month |
| Credit card grace period | 21 - 25 | 3 - 4 | Under a month |
| 30-day return window | 30 | 4 w 2 d | 1 month |
| Typical lease notice | 60 | 8 w 4 d | 2 months |
| Standard tax filing extension | 180 | 25 w 5 d | About 6 months |
| One year (non-leap) | 365 | 52 w 1 d | 12 months |
| One year (leap) | 366 | 52 w 2 d | 12 months |
Notice that the week conversion is where the day count stops lining up with the calendar. 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day, which is why a date that is exactly one year later falls on the next weekday, not the same one. And 180 days is not six months in every case, because the six months you cross may contain anywhere from 181 to 184 days.
If your deadline is defined in business days rather than calendar days, use the business day mode in the calculator or our dedicated business days calculator, which also removes US federal holidays.
Business days, weekends and holidays
A lot of deadlines are written in business days, and that changes the answer substantially. Business days count Monday to Friday and skip weekends. So 5 business days from a Monday is the following Monday, 7 calendar days later, not 5.
| Start day | +5 business days | Calendar days elapsed |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Following Monday | 7 |
| Tuesday | Following Monday | 6 |
| Wednesday | Following Tuesday | 6 |
| Thursday | Following Wednesday | 6 |
| Friday | Following Friday | 7 |
Holidays are the wrinkle. If the period crosses a federal holiday, add a day for each one that falls on a weekday. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year are the ones most likely to bite, and the Federal Reserve publishes the full schedule of bank holidays that most business-day conventions follow.
One warning worth repeating: 'business days' and 'banking days' are not always the same thing. Banks may be open when the stock market is closed, and a legal deadline may define business days differently from your employer. For anything with legal or financial consequences, confirm the definition with the source that set the deadline.
Leap years and the edge cases
Leap years exist because the solar year is about 365.2422 days long, not 365. Every four years we add a day to February to keep the calendar in step with the seasons. Without it, the calendar would drift about one day every four years, and after a few centuries the months would no longer match the seasons.
The rule has a twist. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, unless it is also divisible by 100, in which case it is only a leap year if it is divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, 2100 will not be, and 2024 and 2028 both are. That is why February 2024 had 29 days and February 2026 has 28.
Two edge cases catch people out. First, adding one year to February 29 in a leap year: there is no February 29 in the next year, so systems usually land on February 28 or March 1 depending on the convention. Second, adding 365 days instead of a year: from March 1, 2028 you get February 28, 2029, because the leap day in between shifts everything. When the exact day matters, count days rather than years, and check the result against the weekday to make sure it is not a Saturday or Sunday.
Finally, the calculator works on plain calendar dates, so it does not care about time zones or daylight saving. That is usually what you want for deadlines. If you need an exact time, use a tool that handles time zones, and NIST's time standards are the reference point for the official clock.
Ways to use a date adder
Day counting shows up in more places than people expect, and a quick date adder removes the arithmetic from all of them.
- Contracts and notices. A 30-day notice, a 60-day cancellation window or a 90-day warranty period all need an exact end date, and it needs to be right the first time.
- Returns and warranties. Retail return windows are usually counted from the delivery date in calendar days. Work out the last day to return before you open the box.
- Medical and dental scheduling. 'Come back in 6 weeks' or 'follow up in 3 months' both convert to a specific date you can put in a calendar.
- Project planning. Sprint lengths, sprint-freeze dates and release windows are usually defined in business days.
- Personal deadlines. A 21-day challenge, a 100-day project or a countdown to a trip all need a start date and an end date.
If you want to know how many days sit between two dates rather than the date that is N days away, our days-between-dates calculator does that, and the age calculator handles the years, months and days version for birthdays. Everything here runs in your browser, no dates are uploaded or stored anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
What date is 30 days from today?
Enter today's date and 30 in the calculator above. Because 30 is close to a month, the day of the month usually shifts by a day or two depending on how many days are in the intervening months.
What is 90 days from today?
90 days is almost exactly 3 months, but not. Three calendar months can be 89, 90, 91 or 92 days, so always count days rather than assuming three months is 90.
How do I add 60 days to a date?
Put your start date in, type 60, and the calculator returns the result plus the weekday. 60 days is 8 weeks and 4 days, and it crosses two month boundaries in most years.
How do I add 180 days to a date?
180 days is a little under 6 months. From January 1 it lands on June 30 in a non-leap year and June 29 in a leap year, because February adds a day.
Does adding 365 days give me the same date next year?
Only in a non-leap year. In a leap year you need 366 days. Adding 365 days to March 1, 2027 gives March 1, 2028, but adding 365 to March 1, 2028 gives February 28, 2029.
How do I count business days instead of calendar days?
Switch the day type to business days. Business days skip Saturdays and Sundays, so 10 business days from a Monday is the second Friday, or 14 calendar days later.
What date is 45 days from today?
45 days is 6 weeks and 3 days. Enter 45 in the calculator to get the exact date and the weekday, which is useful for return windows and notice periods.
How do I subtract days from a date?
Type a negative number. Enter -14 to go back two weeks, or -90 to go back roughly a quarter. The calculator handles negative values the same way as positive ones.
How many days are in each month?
January 31, February 28 or 29, March 31, April 30, May 31, June 30, July 31, August 31, September 30, October 31, November 30 and December 31. That is 365 days in a normal year and 366 in a leap year.
What is 21 days from today?
21 days is exactly 3 weeks, so the weekday is the same as your start date. That makes it a common deadline for return policies and notice periods.
Does the calculator include the start day?
No. Adding 1 day to Monday gives Tuesday, not Monday. If you need to count the start day too, add one to your number, which is how 'within 7 days' is sometimes written.
What is the difference between calendar days and business days?
Calendar days count every day, including weekends and holidays. Business days count only Monday to Friday, so 5 business days equals 7 calendar days when there is no holiday in between.
