Age Difference Calculator

The gap between March 14, 1990 and July 2, 1998 is 8 years, 3 months and 18 days. That is 99 months, 433.1 weeks, or 3,032 days. The older birthday is the first one, so the gap runs from 1990 forward to 1998.

Put in two birthdays and this calculator shows the exact gap between them, years, months and days, plus the total weeks and total days apart and who is older.

What an age difference measures

Two people are "eight years apart", but are they eight years and one day apart, or eight years and 364 days? That is nearly a whole extra year of difference, and it is exactly why a calculator beats mental arithmetic. This tool takes two birthdays and subtracts the earlier from the later the same way you subtract on paper: years from years, months from months, days from days, borrowing a month's worth of days when the day column goes negative and borrowing twelve months when the month column does.

The result is a gap you can say out loud: "8 years, 3 months and 18 days". The same gap is also shown in total months, total weeks and total days, because different situations need different units. A school district counts in days. A pediatrician counts in months for the first two years. A dating profile just says "years".

What the calculator will not do is tell you whether a gap is fine or worrying. Age gaps are arithmetic; what they mean for siblings, couples or a job application is a separate question, and this page sticks to the maths. Every figure is worked out inside your browser, the two dates you type are never uploaded.

Worked example: 1990 and 1998

Take two birthdays: March 14, 1990 and July 2, 1998. Subtract the earlier from the later, right to left:

The gap is 8 years, 3 months and 18 days, 3,032 days in total, which is 99 full months and a shade over 433 weeks.

Notice how much the borrow matters. Subtracting the digits blindly gives 8 years, 4 months and −12 days, which is not a real gap. If the second birthday had been March 16 instead of July 2, the same pair of years would read as 8 years and 2 days. The exact gap swings by months depending on the day of the month, which is why "about eight years" is a much vaguer statement than it sounds.

Worked example: the same "ten years" can be two weeks apart

Second example: September 30, 2016 and October 16, 2026.

The gap is 10 years and 16 days, 3,668 days. Both people would describe themselves as "ten years apart".

Now move the second birthday one day earlier, to September 29, 2026, and the gap becomes 9 years, 11 months and 30 days, 3,667 days, but not yet ten full years. In conversation nothing changed. On a form, in an insurance questionnaire or in a school enrolment rule, that single day is the difference between qualifying and not qualifying.

That is the practical lesson: when the exact figure matters, give the dates rather than the rounded years, and let the calculator do the borrowing. Rounding to whole years is fine for small talk and useless for paperwork.

Age gaps at a glance

Here is how common gaps translate between units. The day figures are approximate because leap days land differently depending on the dates, which is why the calculator above returns an exact count for your specific pair of birthdays.

Age gapTotal monthsTotal weeksTotal days
1 year1252365-366
5 years602611,826
8 years 3 months 18 days994333,032
10 years1205223,652-3,653
18 years2169396,574
25 years3001,3049,131

A useful shortcut: one year is 365.25 days on average, so a gap in years multiplied by 365.25 gives a rough day count. It drifts by a day or two over long spans, and it cannot tell you the months-and-days part at all, that is the piece the calculator handles properly.

The half your age plus seven rule

The one age-gap formula everybody quotes is "half your age plus seven": the youngest person you can date without it being considered odd is half your age, plus seven years. It is a social convention rather than a law or a medical guideline, but it is easy to run:

Read it backwards and it also gives the oldest acceptable partner for a younger person: take the age, subtract 7, double it. A 22-year-old's upper bound is (22 − 7) × 2 = 30; a 30-year-old's is 46. The rule widens as you get older, a 20-year-old's acceptable window is about 3 years wide, while a 60-year-old's is 23 years wide. Disagree with the convention if you like; the arithmetic is simple enough to do in your head, and the calculator above will show you the real gap next to it.

Where exact age gaps matter

Age gaps stop being trivia the moment a form asks for one. A few places the exact number changes the answer:

For context on how ages are spread across the country, the US Census Bureau's age and sex data is the standard reference, and the CDC's national birth statistics show how many babies are born each year. Neither will tell you your own gap, the calculator above does that in one step, in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the age difference between two people?

Subtract the earlier birthday from the later one, column by column: years from years, months from months, days from days. When the day number goes negative, borrow the length of the previous month and add it to the days, then reduce the months by one. When the month number goes negative, borrow 12 months and reduce the years by one. The calculator above does this borrowing for you.

What is the age gap between someone born March 14, 1990 and someone born July 2, 1998?

Exactly 8 years, 3 months and 18 days, 3,032 days in total, or 99 full months. The days column needs a borrow: 2 minus 14 is negative, so 30 days (the length of June 1998) are borrowed, giving 18 days and 3 months instead of 4.

Is an 8-year age gap a lot?

It depends entirely on the ages. Eight years between a 12-year-old and a 20-year-old is a large developmental gap; eight years between a 40-year-old and a 48-year-old is barely noticeable. The number itself is neutral, what changes is how much of each person's life has already happened.

How many days apart are two people born exactly 10 years apart?

About 3,653 days. A 10-year span contains two or three leap days depending on where it falls, so the true figure is 3,652 or 3,653. Ten years is also 120 months, or roughly 522 weeks.

Can two people born in the same year have an age difference?

Yes, up to 364 days. Someone born January 1 and someone born December 31 of the same year are 364 days apart (365 in a leap year) even though both are 'the same age' in years. That is why forms ask for a full date rather than a year.

How do I work out an age gap by hand?

Write both dates as YYYY-MM-DD and subtract the earlier from the later. Work right to left: if the days are negative, add the number of days in the month before the later date and take 1 off the months; if the months are negative, add 12 and take 1 off the years. The answer reads years, months, days.

Does the calculator count leap years?

Yes. It uses real calendar months, so February 29 is handled correctly and the total-days figure includes every leap day in the span. That is why two '10 year' gaps can differ by a day.

What is the half your age plus seven rule?

It is a widely quoted social guideline for the youngest person you can date without raised eyebrows: half your age, plus seven years. At 40 that is 27, at 30 it is 22 and at 60 it is 37. It is a convention, not a law, a medical rule or anything enforceable.

How old can a 40-year-old date under half plus seven?

27 or older (half of 40 is 20, plus 7). Read backwards, the rule also gives the oldest partner for a younger person: a 25-year-old's upper bound is (25 − 7) × 2 = 36.

How do I convert an age gap into months?

Multiply the years by 12 and add the leftover months. A gap of 8 years and 3 months is 99 months. Total days divided by 30.44 gives the same figure approximately, but the year-and-month method is exact.

Why does my manual subtraction give a different answer?

Almost always because of the borrow. Subtracting 1990-03-14 from 1998-07-02 digit by digit gives 8 years, 4 months and −12 days, which is not a real gap. Once you borrow 30 days from the months you get 8 years, 3 months and 18 days.

What is a typical age gap between US spouses?

Studies of US marriages commonly report a median gap of about 2 years, with the husband older in roughly 6 out of 10 couples. Gaps of 10 years or more are a small minority, though they are far more common in later marriages than first ones.

Does this tool store the birthdays I enter?

No. The dates are read by JavaScript in your own browser and never sent anywhere. There is no account, no log and no server-side copy.
