What a birth date fixes

A birth date fixes four things at once. It sets the weekday you were born on, the number the date carries inside its year, your age on any later date, and the date of every anniversary after it. This page is a converter for those outputs: enter a birth date and a second date, and it returns the age, the birth weekday, the next anniversary, the date of any anniversary number, and the milestone dates.

Age in years, months and days: the borrow rule

Age in whole years is one subtraction. Age in years, months and days is three subtractions with a borrow. Subtract the birth year from the check year, the birth month from the check month, and the birth day from the check day. If the day result is negative, borrow the real length of the month immediately before the check month and add it to the days. If the month result is then negative, add 12 months and take one year off.

One case shows the borrow. Born October 20, 1990 and checked on February 10, 2026: the day step gives 10 - 20 = -10, so borrow January's 31 days for -10 + 31 = 21 days. The month step gives 2 - 10 - 1 = -9, which becomes 3 after adding 12, and the year step drops to 36 - 1 = 35. The age is 35 years, 3 months and 21 days.

The borrow month is the month before the check month, and it uses that month's real length, not a flat 30 days. Someone born on the 31st and checked in a 30 day month gets a different answer from a calculator that borrows a fixed 30, which is one reason two age tools disagree by a day.

Whole years never round up. Until the anniversary arrives, the year count stays at the lower number, and that is the rule behind school cutoffs, license dates and benefit eligibility.

Worked example: born June 14, 1992, checked on March 3, 2026

Take a birth date of June 14, 1992 and a check date of March 3, 2026, and walk through every output.

Years. 2026 - 1992 = 34, then the borrow below takes one back, so 33.

Months. March minus June is -3, and the borrow takes one more, so -4. Add 12 and the month count is 8.

Days. 3 - 14 = -11. Borrow February's 28 days for -11 + 28 = 17. The age is 33 years, 8 months and 17 days.

Total days. 33 x 365 = 12,045 days for the whole years, plus 8 leap days (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024), which comes to 12,053 days at June 14, 2025. From there to March 3, 2026 is 262 days: 16 in June, 31 in July, 31 in August, 30 in September, 31 in October, 30 in November, 31 in December, 31 in January, 28 in February and 3 in March. Then 12,053 + 262 = 12,315 days lived.

Weeks. 12,315 / 7 = 1,759.29, so the span is 1,759 weeks and 2 days. The birthday that follows, June 14, 2026, is 103 days out and falls on a Sunday, the same weekday as the birth.

The weekday of a birthday, and why it moves

A common year is 365 days, and 365 = 52 x 7 + 1, so the same date falls one weekday later the next year. A leap year is 366 days, which moves the date two weekdays when February 29 sits between the two occurrences.

For a June 14 birthday the sequence from 2026 runs Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. The jump from Monday in 2027 to Wednesday in 2028 happens because February 29, 2028 sits inside that interval and gains the second day.

The whole pattern repeats every 28 years as long as no century year that skips its leap day sits in between, which is why a 1998 wall calendar still lines up with 2026 and why 2100 breaks the run.

The date of your Nth birthday

Any anniversary number converts to a date in one step: add the number to the birth year and keep the month and day. Born June 14, 1992, the 18th birthday is June 14, 2010, the 21st is June 14, 2013, and the 65th is June 14, 2057. The arithmetic is the same each time: 2010 - 1992 = 18 and 2057 - 1992 = 65.

The weekday is the only part that needs a calendar. June 14, 2010 was a Monday, June 14, 2013 was a Friday, and June 14, 2057 is a Thursday.

One date breaks the rule. A February 29 birth has no date to land on in a common year, so the anniversary falls on February 28 or March 1 depending on the convention you follow. The age in years is the same either way, because it comes from the year difference, not from the celebration date.

Milestone ages and the dates they carry

Five ages change what a person can do, and each one has a rule behind it. The table uses a June 14, 1992 birth so every date can be checked against the calculator.

AgeDateWeekdayWhat changes
18June 14, 2010MondayVote in federal, state and local elections (26th Amendment, ratified 1971)
21June 14, 2013FridayBuy alcohol; the minimum purchase age is 21 in every state
25June 14, 2017WednesdayMost US rental agencies drop the young driver fee (company policy, not law)
26June 14, 2018ThursdayCoverage on a parent's health plan ends (Affordable Care Act, 2010)
65June 14, 2057ThursdayMedicare eligibility begins
67June 14, 2059SaturdayFull Social Security retirement age for anyone born in 1960 or later

The health insurance date is the one people misread. Under the Affordable Care Act a parent's plan must keep an adult child on it until age 26, and on a Marketplace plan the coverage can run to December 31 of the year the child turns 26, as HealthCare.gov states. For this birth that is December 31, 2018, six and a half months after the birthday itself.

The retirement date comes from the 1983 amendments to the Social Security Act, which raised full retirement age in steps to 67 for people born in 1960 or later, per the SSA retirement age page. Medicare still starts at 65, and the SSA advises applying up to three months before that birthday, so the practical date here is March 14, 2057.

The other two ages come straight from law: 18 for voting, from the 26th Amendment ratified in 1971, and 21 for buying alcohol, the minimum purchase age reported by the CDC.

Paperwork leans on the same arithmetic. A passport application, a driver license renewal, a school register, a sports age bracket and an insurance quote all ask for a birth date and then derive an age from it. Where a form asks for age at a specific date rather than today, enter that date in the second field and read the age in years, months and days instead of doing the subtraction by hand.

Age on a future date

The same three subtractions work for any later date, and the borrow does the work whenever the day or month runs backwards. Born June 14, 1992 and checked on January 1, 2030: the year step gives 2030 - 1992 = 38, the month step gives 1 - 6 = -5, and the day step gives 1 - 14 = -13.

Borrow December's 31 days: -13 + 31 = 18 days. The month count drops by one to -6, and -6 + 12 = 6 months. The year count drops by one to 37. The age on January 1, 2030 is 37 years, 6 months and 18 days.

The shortcut of subtracting birth year from check year would say 38, which is the age the person turns five months later. That difference is why a birthday calculator asks for two dates instead of one.

Born on February 29

February 29 exists only in leap years. The Gregorian rule, as the USNO leap year page states it, is that years divisible by 4 are leap years except century years, which must be divisible by 400. So 2028 is a leap year, 2100 is not, and 2000 was.

In a common year there is no February 29, and two conventions fill the hole. February 28 keeps the celebration inside February and is the default here. March 1 treats the day after February 28 as the anniversary. The table shows what each gives for a February 29, 2004 birth, counted from March 3, 2026.

March 1March 1, 2027Monday36323
True leap dayFebruary 29, 2028Tuesday72824

Age in years is the year difference under both conventions, so 2027 - 2004 = 23 either way. Age in months and days still uses the literal birth date: from February 29, 2004 to March 3, 2026 the day step gives 3 - 29 = -26, borrowing February's 28 days for 2, the month step gives 3 - 2 - 1 = 0, and the year step stays at 22. That is 22 years, 0 months and 2 days.

For most legal purposes the year count is what counts, and the two conventions agree on it. For a party, a school register or a birthday club, pick one convention and keep it, because the two dates sit a day apart every year and the guest list will notice.

Frequently asked questions

How old am I if I was born on June 14, 1992?

On March 3, 2026 you are 33 years, 8 months and 17 days old. In whole years that is 33, and the 34th birthday arrives on June 14, 2026.

What day of the week was I born?

June 14, 1992 was a Sunday. The weekday comes straight from the calendar, so the calculator reads it off the date rather than estimating it.

What weekday is my next birthday?

June 14, 2026 is a Sunday for that birth date, and the 2027 one is a Monday. The weekday moves forward one day per common year and two across a leap day.

What date is my 65th birthday?

June 14, 2057, a Thursday, for a June 14, 1992 birth. The rule is birth year plus 65 with the month and day unchanged.

How many days old am I?

12,315 days on March 3, 2026 for that birth date, which is 1,759 weeks and 2 days.

What if I was born on February 29?

The next celebration is February 28, 2027, a Sunday, 362 days from March 3, 2026, or March 1, 2027, a Monday, 363 days out. Either way the age turns 23 in 2027 and 24 in 2028.

How is age in months and days calculated?

Subtract year, month and day separately, then borrow the real length of the month before the check month when the day is negative. Born October 20, 1990 and checked February 10, 2026 gives 35 years, 3 months and 21 days.

When do I turn 18?

June 14, 2010 for a 1992 birth. 2010 - 1992 = 18, and the date keeps the birth month and day.

When does coverage on a parent's health plan end?

At 26. For a June 14, 1992 birth that is June 14, 2018, and a Marketplace plan can run to December 31, 2018, the end of the year the child turns 26.

What is my full retirement age?

67 for anyone born in 1960 or later, so a 1992 birth reaches it on June 14, 2059. Medicare starts earlier, at 65, which is June 14, 2057 here.

Why is my age one year less than the year difference?

Because the anniversary has not arrived yet. 2030 - 1992 = 38, but on January 1, 2030 the person is 37 years, 6 months and 18 days old.

Does the calculator count the birthday itself?

Yes. On the birthday the age steps up by one year and the months and days read zero, and the next birthday is that same date, 0 days away.

How many weeks until my next birthday?

103 days from March 3, 2026 to June 14, 2026, which is 14 weeks and 5 days: 14 x 7 = 98, and five days are left over.

Can I use this for an anniversary instead of a birthday?

Yes, any annual date works. Enter the original date and the calculator returns the same age, weekday and milestone dates, counted in years rather than birthdays.
