Chronological Age Calculator
Chronological age is the exact time between a birth date and a chosen date, written as years, months and days. Born 14 March 2019, a person is 7 years 7 months 13 days old on 27 October 2026, which is 2,784 days or 397.7 weeks.
All calculations run locally in your browser. No data is sent to any server.
Enter a birth date and a reference date to get exact chronological age in years, months and days, plus total days, weeks, hours and a borrow by borrow breakdown.
Key takeaways
- Chronological age subtracts days, then months, then years on the calendar.
- A negative day field borrows the real length of the month before the reference date.
- Born 14 March 2019, the age on 27 October 2026 is 7 years 7 months 13 days, or 2,784 days.
- Total days divided by 7 gives weeks, and the remainder stays as leftover days.
- Corrected age subtracts the weeks a baby arrived early and applies to growth and milestones.

What chronological age measures
Chronological age is the time that has passed since a birth date, counted on the calendar and written as years, months and days. It answers a different question from a decimal age. A decimal age of 7.62 years is fine for a growth chart, while a school form, a passport application and a paediatric record all want the calendar form: 7 years, 7 months and 13 days.
The clock time of birth matters only for the first day. Once the birth hour is set, the counter rolls forward by whole calendar days, so a birth at 23:50 on 14 March 2019 and a birth at 00:10 on 15 March 2019 are one day apart even though the babies arrived twenty minutes apart.
The calendar subtraction, step by step
Borrow rules for days and months
The calculator does three subtractions: days, then months, then years. When the day number of the reference date is smaller than the day number of the birth date, one month is borrowed and converted into the number of days in the month before the reference date. When the month number goes negative, one year is borrowed and converted into 12 months.
Born 14 March 2019, measured on 27 October 2026: the day step is 27 - 14 = 13, the month step is 10 - 3 = 7, and the year step is 2026 - 2019 = 7. Nothing had to be borrowed, so the answer is 7 years 7 months 13 days.
Now measure the same person on 5 March 2027. The day step becomes 5 - 14, which is negative, so one month is borrowed from the 3 months standing between March 2019 and March 2027 and turns into the 28 days of February 2027. The day count becomes 33 - 14 = 19, the month count drops to 11, and the age reads 7 years 11 months 19 days. Borrowing the real length of February, not a flat 30, is what keeps the answer inside one day of the truth.
Worked example: a school age record
A child born 14 March 2019 is measured on 27 October 2026 for a sports registration form that asks for age in years and months. The form wants the calendar breakdown first, then the total day count as a check.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Birth date | 14 March 2019 |
| Reference date | 27 October 2026 |
| Years | 7 |
| Months after the last birthday | 7 |
| Days after the last month mark | 13 |
| Total days | 2,784 |
| Weeks and leftover days | 397 weeks and 5 days |
| Hours | 66,816 |
That lifetime adds up to 2,784 days. Split into sevens it comes to 2,784 / 7 = 397.7 weeks, of which 397 count in full because 397 x 7 = 2,779 and five days remain. Counted in hours the same lifetime reaches 2,784 x 24 = 66,816.
Worked example: an adult identity record
A person born 30 November 2012 is measured on 27 October 2026. The birthday has not arrived yet in 2026, so the year count stops at 13 and the month count runs from 30 November 2025 to 30 September 2026 before the days take over.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Birth date | 30 November 2012 |
| Reference date | 27 October 2026 |
| Calendar age | 13 years, 10 months, 27 days |
| Total days | 5,079 |
| Whole weeks | 725 weeks and 4 days |
| Decimal years | 13.91 |
Two spot checks protect the result. Split 5,079 by seven and 5,079 / 7 = 725.6 appears, so 725 full weeks leave four days behind. Then 5,079 / 365.25 = 13.91 decimal years, which agrees with a birthday still approaching its fourteenth. Should a decimal and a birthday-based figure ever drift more than a few weeks apart, one of the two entered dates is likely mistyped.
Days, weeks, hours and minutes from the same dates
Different forms ask for different units, and every unit is a straight multiplication from the day count once the calendar answer is correct.
| Unit | How it comes from days | Example for 2,784 days |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks | days divided by 7 | 397 weeks and 5 days |
| Hours | days multiplied by 24 | 66,816 |
| Minutes | days multiplied by 1,440 | 4,008,960 |
| Decimal years | days divided by 365.25 | 7.62 |
| Decimal months | days divided by 30.4375 | 91.5 |
Milestone ages are easy to plan from these rows. A 1,000 day milestone lands at 1,000 / 365.25 = 2.74 years, a 10,000 day milestone at 10,000 / 365.25 = 27.4 years, and a 20,000 day milestone at 54.8 years. The 365.25 divisor carries the leap day, so it stays within a day over a human lifetime.
Leap day births and end of month births
A birth date of 29 February exists only in leap years. On a reference date in a common year the calculator borrows from February as it is, which gives 28 days for the month, so a child born 29 February 2024 measures as 2 years, 7 months and 28 days on 27 October 2026, with 971 days in total and 138 weeks plus 5 days.
Births at the end of a month follow the same logic. A birthday on 31 January measured on 1 March of a leap year borrows the 29 days that February holds, and the result reads 1 month and 1 day. What matters is that a borrowed month always hands over its own length instead of a flat 30.
Legal documents sometimes override the calendar rule for 29 February. Courts and agencies in some places treat 1 March as the anniversary in common years, and in others treat 28 February. When a filing deadline or a benefit start date depends on that anniversary, read the specific rule for the agency involved rather than the arithmetic.
Corrected age for babies born early
For a baby born before 37 weeks, clinicians often track corrected age for the first two to three years. The correction subtracts the weeks the baby arrived early from the chronological age. A baby born 8 weeks early who is 12 weeks past birth has a corrected age of 12 - 8 = 4 weeks.
Corrected age is used for growth charts and developmental milestones, not for immunisation schedules, which follow chronological age. The CDC developmental monitoring guidance frames milestones in months of age, and the corrected figure is what a clinician compares against those lists for a premature infant.
Once a child passes roughly 24 months of chronological age, most clinics stop correcting and use chronological age alone, because the gap matters less as the child grows.
Where an exact age changes the answer
Several rules turn on an exact age rather than a rounded one. The Social Security full retirement age is 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later, and the reduction for an early claim is computed month by month, so the month count in the calendar answer is the number that matters. Medicare starts at 65. School entry cutoffs are set by state and usually test the age on a fixed date such as 1 September.
Youth sport age groups, passport validity rules for minors and some tax provisions all work the same way: they compare a birth date to a reference date, then ask whether the result has reached a threshold. Getting the day count right is what decides whether a child is 4 years 364 days or 5 years on the cutoff date, and that single day can move a registration by a full year.
For population level definitions, the age and sex data published by the US Census Bureau uses the same convention: age is completed years at the reference date. The Social Security Administration publishes the month by month reduction table, and the CDC publishes the milestone checklists that corrected age is compared against.
Frequently asked questions
What is chronological age in plain terms?
It is the time between a birth date and a chosen date, written as years, months and days. Born 14 March 2019, the chronological age on 27 October 2026 is 7 years, 7 months and 13 days.
How do I work out chronological age by hand?
Subtract days, then months, then years. With 14 March 2019 and 27 October 2026, the days are 27 - 14 = 13, the months are 10 - 3 = 7 and the years are 2026 - 2019 = 7.
Why not just divide the total days by 365?
Dividing by 365 drifts against the calendar because leap years add a day every four years. The 365.25 divisor is better, and it still cannot reproduce the month and day fields that forms ask for.
How many days is a 7 year old?
About 2,557 days at 365.25 days per year. One specific child born 14 March 2019 is 2,784 days old on 27 October 2026, because the birth date sits partway through the year.
What happens for a 29 February birthday?
In common years the borrowed February supplies 28 days. A child born 29 February 2024 measures as 2 years, 7 months and 28 days on 27 October 2026, which is 971 days.
Does the time of birth change the count?
It can change the first day by one. A birth at 23:50 and a birth at 00:10 fall on different dates, and the day counter follows the date on the birth certificate.
What is corrected age?
It is chronological age minus the weeks a baby was born early. A baby 8 weeks premature who is 12 weeks old has a corrected age of 4 weeks, used for growth and milestone checks.
Is corrected age used for vaccines?
No. Immunisation schedules follow chronological age, while growth charts and developmental milestones often use corrected age for the first two years.
How many weeks is 2,784 days?
397 whole weeks plus 5 days. The check is 397 x 7 = 2,779, and 2,784 - 2,779 = 5.
How many hours old is a 7 year old?
For the 2,784 day example, 2,784 x 24 = 66,816 hours. That figure ignores daylight saving shifts, which add or remove one hour twice a year.
Which age do school cutoffs use?
States set their own cutoff date and their own rule, often testing whether the child has reached age 5 by a date such as 1 September. The exact day count decides the outcome for children born near the line.
When does Social Security full retirement age apply?
Full retirement age is 67 for people born in 1960 or later. The early claim reduction is applied month by month, so an exact month count changes the payment.
Can chronological age be negative?
Only if the reference date sits before the birth date. In that case the calculator reports the gap as a negative span, which usually means the dates were entered the wrong way round.
Does the calculator store the dates I type?
No. The arithmetic runs in the browser with plain JavaScript and the dates never leave the page, so nothing is written to a server or a log.
