What this calculator counts

Put in a date and the calculator tells you five things: how many days the year still has, what number day of the year you are on, how much of the year is already gone, how many of the remaining days are weekdays, and which US federal holidays remain.

The first number is the one people search for, and it is also the one most likely to be off by one. Two honest answers exist, and they differ by exactly one day, so it pays to know which one you are looking at.

The other numbers are the useful ones for planning. A count of 76 days sounds like a lot of time until you notice that 22 of them fall on a weekend and 3 of them are federal holidays. The working day count is the number that decides what you can finish.

Everything here runs off the Gregorian calendar, the one in everyday use across the United States. You can set any date you like, so it works for a future deadline as well as for today.

Including today or not: the one day difference

Say the date is October 17, 2026. Counting today, the year still has 76 days: October 17 through December 31. Not counting today, it has 75, because you start the count on October 18.

Neither answer is wrong. Including today treats the year as a block of calendar days that has not finished yet, which is what you want for a countdown. Excluding today treats today as already spent, which is what you want when you are asking how much time you have left to do something.

The gap matters most at the edges. On December 31 the answer is 1 day left including today and 0 starting tomorrow. On January 1 the answer is 365 or 364, and the second one is the number of days you have before the year ends.

The same choice shows up in every countdown you have seen. A counter that reads 76 today and 75 tomorrow is not broken, it is counting the calendar days the year still holds. A counter that reads 75 and then 74 is counting the days you still have to act. The gap never grows past one day, but it is enough for two people to disagree about a number they both worked out correctly.

If you are sending the number to someone else, say which one you used. Half of the arguments about countdowns are two people counting the same days with different start points.

Why 2026 has 365 days and 2028 has 366

The Earth does not go around the Sun in a whole number of days. NIST puts the true length of the year at 365.2422 days on its leap seconds FAQ page, and the calendar has to catch up with that fraction.

The fix is a leap day. Add one day every four years and the calendar averages 365.25 days, which is close to the real figure. That slight overcorrection is why century years are handled differently: a century year only counts as a leap year when it divides evenly by 400.

YearDaysWhy
2026365Common year
2027365Common year
2028366Divisible by 4, so February 29 exists
2029365Common year
2032366Divisible by 4
2100365Century year that does not divide by 400

For counting days left, the leap year rule only matters in one place. If your date is on or before February 28 in a leap year, there is one more day in the year than you might expect, and February has 29 days instead of 28.

That single day is also why a countdown started in January can look one day short of what you expect. Check whether the year you are counting is divisible by 4 before you trust a number you worked out by hand.

Worked example: October 17, 2026

Here is the full count for one date, worked out step by step so you can check it against the calculator.

A common way to get this wrong is to subtract the day number from 365 and stop there. That gives 75, which is the count starting tomorrow, not the count including today. Add the 1 back and you have the number of calendar days the year still holds.

The same arithmetic works on any date. Find the day number, subtract it from the length of the year, and add 1 if you want today included.

Days left is not the same as working days left

Seventy six days sounds generous. Take out the weekends and the holidays and the picture changes, which is why the working day count is the one to plan against.

The working day count also depends on whose calendar you use. A teacher counts to the last day of term, a contractor counts to the last week the weather allows, and a retail worker counts to the last shift before the holiday shutdown. This calculator gives you the weekday figure, and you take out whatever your own calendar removes on top of it.

December looks like the roomiest month with 31 days, and it is, but many offices close for part of the last two weeks of the year. Paid time off, school schedules and year end shutdowns all eat into the count in a way a calendar cannot see.

If you are counting down to a deadline that depends on other people, subtract more than the weekends. Late December is the slowest stretch of the American business year, and a task that needs three approvals in the last week of December is a task that will slip into January.

Federal holidays still ahead in 2026

There are 11 federal holidays in the United States each year. The 2026 dates are published by the Office of Personnel Management on its federal holidays page, and by mid October most of them have passed.

HolidayDate in 2026Day of the week
Veterans DayNovember 11Wednesday
Thanksgiving DayNovember 26Thursday
Christmas DayDecember 25Friday

Those three take the working day count from 54 down to 51. Columbus Day fell on October 12, before the example date, and Juneteenth, Independence Day and Labor Day are long gone by then.

Thanksgiving and Christmas both land late in the week in 2026, which makes for two long weekends and two quiet Fridays. If your year end plan depends on a signature from someone at a bank or a government office, build around those dates.

What to do with the time that is left

The count is only useful if it changes what you do this week. Three uses come up more than the rest.

One more that is easy to miss: check what resets on January 1. Subscriptions, insurance deductibles and annual benefit limits tend to turn over with the calendar year, so a single December appointment can use two years of benefit inside one month.

Then write the number down. A countdown on a page is easy to forget, and a note on the fridge with 51 on it does more work than a mental estimate.

Other ways people use this number

A year countdown shows up in more places than year end planning, and the arithmetic is the same every time.

The count is also a useful check on someone else's promise. If a contractor says there is plenty of time left in the year and the calculator says 51 working days, that is a number worth bringing back to the conversation.

Whatever you are counting, run it off the working day number rather than the calendar day number the first time. The gap between the two is usually what makes a year end plan fail.

This counts calendar days on the Gregorian calendar. Federal holiday dates come from the Office of Personnel Management, and your own employer or school may close on other days.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are left in 2026?

From October 17, 2026 there are 76 days left if you count today, and 75 if you start counting tomorrow. All 76 fall in October, November and December.

How many days until New Year's Day 2027?

76 days from October 17, 2026. That is the same count as the days left in 2026 including today, because the last of those days is December 31 and January 1 is the next one.

What day number of the year is October 17, 2026?

It is day 290 of 365. Add up the first nine months, which is 273 days, then add 17 days of October to reach 290.

Is 2026 a leap year?

No. 2026 is a common year with 365 days, and February has 28. The next leap year is 2028, which has 366 days and a February 29.

How many weekdays are left in 2026?

54 weekdays from October 17 through December 31. October has 10 left, November has 21, and December has 23.

How many weekends are left in 2026?

22 weekend days, which is 11 Saturdays and 11 Sundays. October has 5 left, November has 9, and December has 8.

Should today count as a day left in the year?

It depends on what you are counting. Including today answers how many calendar days the year still has, which is 76 on October 17. Excluding it answers how many days you have to act, which is 75. Both are correct, so pick one and say which you mean.

How many federal holidays are left in 2026?

Three: Veterans Day on November 11, Thanksgiving Day on November 26, and Christmas Day on December 25. Columbus Day on October 12 has already passed.

How many working days are left in the year?

51 working days from October 17, 2026. Start with 54 weekdays, then subtract the 3 federal holidays that fall on a weekday. Your own employer may close on other days too.

Why does the year have 365 days and not 365.25?

The Earth takes about 365.2422 days to go around the Sun, according to NIST. A calendar of 365 days with a leap day every four years averages 365.25, which is close enough that the error takes thousands of years to add up to a day.

When is the next leap year?

2028. Leap years fall on years divisible by 4, with one exception: century years only count when they are divisible by 400, which is why 2000 was a leap year and 2100 will not be.

How do I work out the day of the year by hand?

Add the days in the months already finished, then add today's date. For October 17, 2026 the finished months come to 31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 31 + 30 = 273, and 273 + 17 = 290.

What percentage of 2026 is still left?

About 21%. There are 76 days left out of 365, and 76 / 365 = 0.208, so roughly a fifth of the year is still ahead on October 17.

Does daylight saving time change the count?

No. The count is calendar days, and the clocks moving back an hour in November does not add or remove a day. Only the calendar does that.
