Christmas Day 2026 arrives on Friday, December 25, leaving 67 days to plan from the middle of October. That is nine weeks and four days, or nine shopping Saturdays and 1,608 hours, and the last USPS send-by date for Priority Mail in the lower 48 states is Friday, December 18.

Christmas 2026 is Friday, December 25
Christmas Day is the one date on the American calendar that never moves. It is December 25 every year, in every state, and no legislature has ever managed to shift it. What does move is the weekday it lands on, and that is the number a countdown tracks. From October 19, 2026 there are 67 days until Christmas, which is 9 weeks and 4 days, or 1,608 hours.
Because the date is fixed, the weekday rotates on a 28 year cycle with a few skips for leap years. The table below shows where the holiday falls for the next ten years, which is enough to see the pattern and to plan around a Saturday or Sunday Christmas.
| Year | Christmas Day | What it means for the weekend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Friday, December 25 | A three day weekend for most offices |
| 2027 | Saturday, December 25 | No day off in lieu for many workers, and one fewer shopping Saturday |
| 2028 | Monday, December 25 | Long weekend, stores busy the Saturday before |
| 2029 | Tuesday, December 25 | Midweek holiday, shipping crushes the prior Friday |
| 2030 | Wednesday, December 25 | Midweek holiday |
| 2031 | Thursday, December 25 | Many offices close on the 26th as well |
| 2032 | Saturday, December 25 | Another Saturday Christmas |
| 2033 | Sunday, December 25 | Observed Monday the 26th for federal workers |
| 2034 | Monday, December 25 | Long weekend |
| 2035 | Tuesday, December 25 | Midweek holiday |
Two things follow from a fixed date. First, the number of usable shopping Saturdays changes every year, and 2027 costs you one because the holiday itself falls on a Saturday. Second, the gap between Thanksgiving and Christmas changes with Thanksgiving, which moves between November 22 and November 28. In 2026 Thanksgiving is November 26, so there are 29 days between the two holidays, and the whole retail season is squeezed into four weekends.
How the countdown counts days
The number in the calculator is a count of whole calendar days, not hours and not business days. The day before Christmas reads 1, Christmas Day itself reads 0, and the day after reads a negative number, because the count is signed rather than clamped at zero.
Dates are built in UTC inside the script and compared at midnight, so the November 1 change out of daylight saving time cannot shift the total by a day. That sounds fussy until you count in local time across the change: a naive script adds or loses an hour, and the day count lands one off for part of the country.
Business days are a separate question. If you need a bank transfer to clear or a school form to be filed, count weekdays only and subtract the federal holidays. Christmas Day is a federal holiday, so December 25 is out, and many employers also close on December 24.
The countdown does not know your time zone. Someone in Hawaii and someone in Maine see the same number for most of the day, and the two only disagree in the hours around midnight local time.
The shopping calendar: nine Saturdays and two sale days
Between October 19 and December 25, 2026 there are nine Saturdays: October 24, October 31, November 7, November 14, November 21, November 28, December 5, December 12 and December 19. Add the nine Sundays and you have 18 weekend days, which is the realistic window for anyone shopping in person.
The two sale dates that anchor the season both sit inside that window. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, which puts Black Friday on November 27 and Cyber Monday on November 30. Those are 39 and 42 days from October 19.
| Date | Days from October 19 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, November 27 | 39 | Black Friday, the deepest discounts on electronics and small appliances |
| Monday, November 30 | 42 | Cyber Monday, the best online stock of the season |
| Wednesday, December 9 | 51 | USPS international send-by date for most destinations |
| Thursday, December 17 | 59 | USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail cutoff |
| Friday, December 18 | 60 | USPS Priority Mail cutoff |
| Saturday, December 19 | 61 | Priority Mail Express cutoff and the last Saturday before the holiday |
| Thursday, December 24 | 66 | Christmas Eve, the day most gifts get exchanged |
| Friday, December 25 | 67 | Christmas Day |
December 19 is both the last Saturday and the express mail cutoff, which is why the final weekend is the worst one to shop. Stores are picked over, and anything ordered online that day has to travel by the most expensive service to arrive on time.
USPS deadlines for the 2026 season
The Postal Service published its 2026 holiday cutoffs in September. For delivery before December 25 in the lower 48 states, the recommended send-by dates are December 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail, and December 19 for Priority Mail Express.
| Service | Send by (lower 48) | Days from October 19 |
|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | Thursday, December 17 | 59 |
| First-Class Mail | Thursday, December 17 | 59 |
| Priority Mail | Friday, December 18 | 60 |
| Priority Mail Express | Saturday, December 19 | 61 |
Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the territories get Ground Advantage one day earlier, on December 16. International mail is much tighter: the recommended date for First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International to Europe, Asia, Canada and Mexico is December 9, which is 51 days from October 19. Military mail to APO and FPO addresses has its own table, and Ground Advantage to some ZIP ranges is as early as November 4.
These are recommendations, not guarantees. The Postal Service sets them fresh each fall, and the dates depend on the network being able to keep up. Check the USPS holiday shipping page before you buy postage rather than trusting a date you read in October.
Worked example: spreading a $600 gift budget
A $600 budget feels generous in October and thin on December 20. The fix is to divide it by the time you have. With 67 days and 9 shopping Saturdays left, $600 works out to $66.67 per Saturday, about $62.69 per week, or $8.96 a day.
| Gift budget | Per week | Per Saturday | Per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| $300 | $31.34 | $33.33 | $4.48 |
| $600 | $62.69 | $66.67 | $8.96 |
| $900 | $94.03 | $100.00 | $13.43 |
| $1,200 | $125.37 | $133.33 | $17.91 |
Start later and the same budget gets harder. Begin on December 1 and there are 24 days and 3 Saturdays left, so $600 becomes $25 a day and $200 per Saturday. The total has not changed. Only the number of trips and paychecks you can spread it across has.
Two adjustments keep the plan honest. Add the cost of cards, wrapping paper, tape, postage and a tip for a delivery driver, which together often run $40 to $80 on a $600 budget. Then subtract what you have already spent, because a budget that ignores the gifts bought in September is a wish rather than a plan.
If your pay arrives every two weeks, divide by the number of paydays left instead of by weeks. There are at most five biweekly paydays before Christmas from mid October, which turns $600 into $120 a paycheck if you use all five.
Advent, Christmas Eve and the twelve days
Advent 2026 begins on Sunday, November 29, the fourth Sunday before Christmas. The Sundays that follow are December 6, December 13 and December 20, which puts Christmas Eve on the fourth Thursday after the first candle. Advent runs 26 days in 2026, and the count is why chocolate Advent calendars have 24 doors rather than 25: the last door opens on Christmas Eve.
Christmas Eve is December 24, 66 days from October 19. The season does not end that night. The twelve days of Christmas run from December 25 to January 5, with Epiphany on January 6, 2027, which is 79 days out. If you are planning a party for the season rather than the day, the twelve days are the window most people forget, and they are quieter and cheaper than the week before Christmas.
For anything that has to arrive by a date rather than be celebrated on it, the number to watch is not Christmas itself but the day before. Cards, teacher gifts and office exchanges almost always happen in the week before December 25, which puts the real deadline around December 18.
Gift cards, donations and the last week
Gift cards are the default answer for the person who has everything, and they are also the payment method scammers ask for first. The FTC guide to gift card scams is worth reading before buying a card for someone you met online, and it explains why no government agency or utility will ever ask to be paid in gift cards.
December 31 is the other deadline that matters. Charitable gifts have to be made by the end of the calendar year to count for that tax year, and the IRS rules on charitable contributions require a bank record or a written receipt from the charity for a cash gift of any size. The deduction only helps if you itemize, so a donation made purely for the write off rarely pays for itself. December 31, 2026 is 73 days from October 19, and January 1 is 74.
The last week is also when shipping costs the most and stores run out of the sizes people want. If a gift has to travel, aim for the December 17 and December 18 cutoffs rather than the express dates, because express service in the final week is priced for emergencies.

From October 19, 2026 there are 67 days until Christmas, which is 9 weeks and 4 days. Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday, December 25, and the last Saturday before the holiday is December 19.
What day of the week is Christmas 2026?
Friday. Christmas falls on a Friday in 2026, which gives most offices a three day weekend. The next Saturday Christmas is 2027, and the next Sunday one is 2033.
How many weeks until Christmas?
9 weeks and 4 days from October 19, 2026. Counted in whole weeks, that is 9 full weeks, or 67 days.
How many Saturdays are left before Christmas 2026?
Nine. They fall on October 24, October 31, November 7, November 14, November 21, November 28, December 5, December 12 and December 19. The last one is also the Priority Mail Express cutoff.
How many hours until Christmas?
1,608 hours from October 19, 2026, which is 67 days multiplied by 24. The count assumes midnight at the start of each day and ignores time zones.
What is the last day to ship a gift for Christmas 2026?
December 19 for Priority Mail Express in the lower 48 states. Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail need to go by December 17, and Priority Mail by December 18. These are USPS recommendations, not guarantees.
When does Advent start in 2026?
Sunday, November 29, 2026. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, so the four Sundays are November 29, December 6, December 13 and December 20.
How many days are there between Thanksgiving and Christmas in 2026?
29 days. Thanksgiving is November 26 and Christmas is December 25, which leaves four full weekends for shopping, including Black Friday on November 27 and Cyber Monday on November 30.
How much should I save per week for a $600 Christmas budget?
About $62.69 a week, or $66.67 per shopping Saturday, from October 19. Starting on December 1 instead leaves 24 days, which pushes the same budget to $25 a day.
How many days until Christmas 2027?
432 days from October 19, 2026. Christmas 2027 falls on a Saturday, so there is one fewer usable shopping Saturday that year than in 2026.
Does the countdown account for my time zone?
No. It counts whole calendar days from the date you enter, so everyone sees the same number. The only time it can differ from a clock based count is in the hours around local midnight.
What are the twelve days of Christmas?
December 25 through January 5, with Epiphany on January 6. The twelve days end the night before Epiphany, which is why Twelfth Night parties fall on January 5.
Is December 24 or December 25 the bigger shopping deadline?
December 24 for anything bought in person, and December 18 for anything shipped. Most gift exchanges, office parties and family gatherings happen on Christmas Eve, so a gift that arrives on the 24th is already late for half of them.
How much does holiday postage add to a gift budget?
Plan on $8 to $15 per package for Priority Mail in the lower 48 states, and more for express. On a $600 gift budget with six packages shipped, that is $48 to $90, which is the same as one mid priced gift.
