Easter 2027 falls on Sunday, March 28

Easter Sunday 2027 is March 28. From October 19, 2026 that is 160 days, or 22 weeks and 6 days, which comes to 3,840 hours. It is one of the earlier Easters in the cycle, and an early date tightens the spring calendar: school breaks tied to the holiday land in mid March, and the window for shipping a package before the weekend is short.

The holiday can fall on any Sunday from March 22 to April 25. March 22 is the rare end of that range. The last time it happened was 1818 and the next is 2285. April 25 shows up more often: 1886, 1943, and next in 2038. Most years land somewhere in between, which is why a countdown beats a fixed date on your calendar.

Why the date moves and who sets it

The rule sounds simple and is not. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon that falls on or after March 21. The full moon in that sentence is not the one you see in the sky. It is an ecclesiastical moon worked out from tables, and March 21 is fixed as the date of the spring equinox whether or not the equinox lands there that year. The US Naval Observatory explanation of the date of Easter lists the three rules the churches agreed on and the integer method that turns a year into a date.

Two things follow from that. The date is the same for every Western church, so a Catholic parish in Ohio and a Lutheran church in Texas hold Easter on the same Sunday. And the date comes from calendar rules rather than from watching the sky, so it can be predicted centuries ahead.

Orthodox churches use older tables tied to the Julian calendar, so their Easter usually lands later. In 2027 Orthodox Easter is May 2, five weeks after March 28. Both dates are correct for the calendars that produce them, and families with members in both traditions end up with two dinners.

How the countdown counts days

The calculator counts whole calendar days. The Saturday before Easter reads 1, Easter Sunday reads 0, and the Monday after reads a negative number. That is deliberate: a signed count tells you when a date has passed instead of quietly stopping at zero.

Dates are built at midnight UTC inside the script, so the March 14 switch to daylight saving time cannot shift the total by a day. The count is the same for a reader in California and a reader in Florida. UTC is the time scale kept by NIST's time and frequency division, and it does not observe daylight saving.

Business days are a separate question. If a bakery order or a bank transfer has to clear, count weekdays and subtract the days the shop closes. The 160 day span from October 19 to Easter contains 45 weekend days, which is more than a quarter of the total.

One more distinction matters for planning. The count to Easter is not the count to the Easter weekend. Egg hunts, brunches and family visits usually happen on Saturday the 27th, so the practical deadline is one day earlier than the number on this page.

Easter dates from 2027 to 2036

Ten years is enough to see how far the date swings. It moves by a few days to a month from one year to the next, and it repeats now and then: 2027 and 2032 both land on March 28.

YearEaster SundayAsh WednesdayPalm Sunday
2027March 28February 10March 21
2028April 16March 1April 9
2029April 1February 14March 25
2030April 21March 6April 14
2031April 13February 26April 6
2032March 28February 11March 21
2033April 17March 2April 10
2034April 9February 22April 2
2035March 25February 7March 18
2036April 13February 27April 6

Two years in this window stand out. 2028 has the latest Easter of the decade on April 16, and 2035 has the earliest on March 25. For a bakery, a florist or a banquet hall, the gap between those two dates is 22 days of selling season.

Holy Week, Lent and the 46 days before Easter

Lent starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, which puts it 46 days before Easter Sunday. Six of those days are Sundays, and most traditions do not count Sunday as a fast day, which leaves the familiar 40. In 2027 Ash Wednesday is February 10, 114 days from October 19, and the 40 fasting days run from February 10 to March 27 once the six Sundays are set aside.

Holy Week is the last eight days, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. Good Friday is a quiet day for some employers and a normal workday for most: it is not a federal holiday. The federal holiday schedule from the Office of Personnel Management lists no spring holiday between Washington's Birthday in February and Memorial Day in May.

Pentecost closes the season 49 days after Easter, on May 16, 2027. Ascension comes 39 days after, on May 6, and it always falls on a Thursday, which is why many churches move the service to the following Sunday.

Worked example: a ham dinner for 12

Feeding 12 people at Easter costs less than a Thanksgiving turkey dinner, mostly because ham is cheaper per pound and the sides are simpler. A bone-in ham serves about two people per pound once the bone is allowed for, so 12 guests need a 6 pound ham. At $4.99 a pound that is 6 x 4.99 = $29.94.

ItemQuantityPriceCost
Ham, bone in6 lb$4.99 a pound$29.94
Eggs, two dozen2 dozen$3.49 a dozen$6.98
Potatoes6 lb$1.29 a pound$7.74
Rolls2425 cents each$6.00
Pies2$12.99 each$25.98
Total$76.64

That works out to $6.39 per person. Two changes move the total. A spiral cut ham costs about $2 more per pound, which adds $12.00 to the same meal. And a potluck, where three families each bring a side, cuts the host's share to roughly $45.

Leftovers are part of the plan. A 6 pound ham leaves about 2 pounds of meat after the meal, enough for sandwiches for four people for two days.

Worked example: a $240 budget across 160 days

If the holiday has a budget, divide it by the days you have left rather than by the number of shopping trips you hope to make. With 160 days and $240, the plan is $1.50 a day, or $10.50 a week across 22.86 weeks: 240 / 160 = $1.50 and 240 / 22.86 = $10.50. Put $10.50 aside every Friday and the money is there by the middle of March.

BudgetPer weekPer day
$120$5.25$0.75
$240$10.50$1.50
$360$15.75$2.25
$480$21.00$3.00

Start late and the daily number climbs. Begin on March 1 and there are 27 days left, so $240 becomes $8.89 a day. The total has not changed. Only the number of paychecks you can spread it over has.

Two costs get left out of Easter budgets and then show up on the card statement. Candy and plastic eggs for a hunt run $2 to $4 per child, and a new outfit for church runs $40 to $80 for an adult. Add both before dividing, or the weekly figure will look better than the month feels.

Egg hunts, candy and the last week

An egg hunt is a volume problem. Plan on 10 eggs per child, so 24 kids need 240 eggs, which is 20 dozen, since 240 / 12 = 20. Plastic eggs at $2.49 a dozen come to 20 x 2.49 = $49.80, and candy to fill them adds about $3 per child, or $72. Baskets at $6 each add $144. The party lands near $265.80 before any food is served.

Boiled eggs are cheaper than plastic ones if you fill them yourself, but they have to stay cold. Anything perishable that sits out for more than two hours should be thrown away, and a hunt in a warm yard reaches that limit faster than most hosts expect. Keep a cooler for the eggs you plan to eat.

Shipping is the other deadline. Easter is not a postal holiday, so mail moves on Good Friday, but a package that has to arrive by Saturday March 27 should go out by Monday March 22 on a three to five day service. The week before Easter is one of the busiest for florists, so delivery orders for that Saturday close earlier than the calendar suggests.

Prices here are typical 2026 US grocery figures used to show the method, not quotes. Food safety guidance and postage rates change, so check the source before you rely on either.

Frequently asked questions

How many days until Easter 2027?

From October 19, 2026 there are 160 days until Easter on March 28, 2027. That is 22 weeks and 6 days, or 3,840 hours.

What date is Easter 2027?

Sunday, March 28, 2027. It is one of the earlier dates in the Easter cycle, which runs from March 22 to April 25.

Why does Easter change every year?

Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21. The moon is a table value rather than the real full moon, and March 21 is fixed as the equinox, so the date shifts within a 35 day window.

When is Ash Wednesday 2027?

Wednesday, February 10, 2027, which is 114 days from October 19, 2026. It falls 46 days before Easter Sunday.

46 days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday. Six of those days are Sundays, which most traditions do not count as fast days, so the fasting period is usually described as 40 days.

When is Good Friday 2027?

Friday, March 26, 2027, two days before Easter and 158 days from October 19, 2026. It is not a federal holiday, so banks, schools and post offices follow their normal Friday schedule.

When is Palm Sunday 2027?

Sunday, March 21, 2027, one week before Easter. It opens Holy Week and is 153 days from October 19, 2026.

When is Pentecost 2027?

Sunday, May 16, 2027, 49 days after Easter. Ascension comes earlier, on Thursday May 6, 39 days after Easter.

What is the earliest and latest date Easter can fall?

March 22 and April 25. March 22 last happened in 1818 and comes again in 2285. April 25 happened in 1886 and 1943 and comes again in 2038.

Why is Orthodox Easter on a different day?

Orthodox churches set the date with older tables tied to the Julian calendar. In 2027 Orthodox Easter is May 2, five weeks after the Western date of March 28.

How much ham do I need for 12 people?

About 6 pounds of bone-in ham, allowing half a pound per person plus the bone. At $4.99 a pound that is $29.94, and the full dinner with sides works out to about $6.39 per person.

How much should I save each week for a $240 Easter budget?

About $10.50 a week, or $1.50 a day, over the 160 days from October 19. Starting on March 1 instead leaves 27 days, which pushes the same budget to $8.89 a day.

Is Easter a federal holiday?
