Why Thanksgiving moves every year
Thanksgiving is not tied to a date. Federal law sets it as the fourth Thursday in November, so the holiday slides up to a week earlier or later from one year to the next. Congress passed that rule in a joint resolution in 1941, and the National Archives keeps the story of how the date was settled.
Before 1941 the date came from a presidential proclamation. Abraham Lincoln named the last Thursday of November in 1863. For most years the last Thursday and the fourth Thursday are the same day, and the two only split in Novembers that hold five Thursdays. In 1939 Roosevelt moved the holiday to the second-to-last Thursday to give retailers one more week of Christmas shopping, and the country ran on two competing dates for two years before Congress wrote the fourth-Thursday rule into law.
That rule gives a 7 day window. The earliest possible Thanksgiving is November 22, which happens when November 1 falls on a Thursday. The latest is November 28, when November 1 falls on a Friday. Every date in between shows up in some year, and the holiday never leaves that band. The federal holiday calendar lists it the same way for all 50 states.
Worked example: counting from October 17, 2026
Take October 17, 2026 as the day you are counting from. Thanksgiving that year is November 26, 2026. Break the gap into pieces:
- October 17 to October 31: 14 days, because October has 31 days and 31 minus 17 is 14
- November 1 to November 26: 26 days
- Together: 40 days
Turn 40 days into other units. 40 divided by 7 is 5 weeks and 5 days. 40 times 24 is 960 hours. 40 times 1,440 is 57,600 minutes. November 26, 2026 falls on a Thursday, and October 17, 2026 is a Saturday, so the countdown starts on a weekend and ends on a weekday morning.
Two checks catch the usual mistake. First, if you count October 17 itself you get 41 days, and that is wrong for a countdown that ends on the morning of the 26th. Second, the Saturday before Thanksgiving is November 21, which is 35 days out, and 40 minus 35 is 5 days, exactly the gap between that Saturday and the holiday. Run both checks and you know the number is not off by one.
Thanksgiving dates from 2026 to 2032
The fourth Thursday is easy to work out once you know the weekday of November 1. When November 1 is a Wednesday or a Thursday, the month holds five Thursdays and the fifth one is an ordinary shopping day after the holiday.
| Year | Thanksgiving | November 1 falls on | Thursdays in November |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | November 26 | Sunday | 4 |
| 2027 | November 25 | Monday | 4 |
| 2028 | November 23 | Wednesday | 5 |
| 2029 | November 22 | Thursday | 5 |
| 2030 | November 28 | Friday | 4 |
| 2031 | November 27 | Saturday | 4 |
| 2032 | November 25 | Tuesday | 4 |
2029 is the early case and 2030 is the late case, so those two rows bracket everything else. The date can jump 6 days between back-to-back years, as it does from November 22, 2029 to November 28, 2030, and it can fall 1 day earlier, as it does from November 26, 2026 to November 25, 2027. Anyone planning a fixed-date event around the holiday has to look up the year, because no month-and-day rule covers it.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday ride on the same date
Both shopping days are defined as offsets from Thanksgiving, so they move whenever the holiday moves. Black Friday is the day after, an offset of 1 day. Cyber Monday is the Monday after, which works out to 4 days after Thanksgiving in every year, because Thursday plus four days is Monday.
| Year | Thanksgiving | Black Friday | Cyber Monday | Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | November 26 | November 27 | November 30 | 4 days |
| 2027 | November 25 | November 26 | November 29 | 4 days |
| 2028 | November 23 | November 24 | November 27 | 4 days |
| 2029 | November 22 | November 23 | November 26 | 4 days |
| 2030 | November 28 | November 29 | December 2 | 4 days |
The 4 day gap holds because it is arithmetic on weekdays, not on the calendar month. What does change is the length of the run to Christmas. A late Thanksgiving squeezes the season: in 2030 the holiday is November 28 and Christmas is 27 days later, against 29 days in 2026 and 33 days in 2029. Retailers plan promotions around that number, and so do people shipping gifts across the country.
Counting to New Year's Day across the year line
The New Year countdown is the one place where the year changes in the middle of the count, and it is where most people slip. From November 26, 2026 to January 1, 2027 there are 36 days: 4 days left in November, 31 in December, and 1 to reach January 1. From December 25 to January 1 is 7 days. From December 31 to January 1 is 1 day, not zero, because the count measures whole days between dates.
The whole holiday run from Thanksgiving 2026 is 36 days, split into 29 days to Christmas and 7 more to New Year's Day. That split is worth holding in your head if you are planning travel, because the two halves have different prices: flights in the first half are usually cheaper than flights in the second.
A countdown that starts in December rolls to the next January on its own. Enter December 28, 2026 and the New Year row reads January 1, 2027 with 4 days to go. Enter January 3, 2027 and it reads January 1, 2028 with 363 days to go, because the next January 1 is a full year out.
How the countdown counts, and the off-by-one trap
The calculator subtracts one date from the other and reports whole calendar days. The date itself reads 0, shown as today. The day before reads 1. That matches how people talk about a countdown: on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving you say the holiday is tomorrow, not one day ago.
Time zones do not change a date-only countdown, because both ends are calendar dates with no clock time attached. A countdown to dinner at 3 pm local time is a different problem, and there the hours matter: from the morning of November 26, 2026 to a 3 pm serve time is about 10 hours, not a full day.
Leap years leave this holiday alone. February 29 sits before November, so a leap year adds a day to the year but never sits between an October date and Thanksgiving. The gap from October 17 to November 26 is 40 days in every year, leap or not, which is why a countdown built on this holiday repeats cleanly from year to year.
What the 40 days are for: thawing the bird
A frozen turkey is the reason the countdown matters more than the date. USDA food safety guidance for refrigerator thawing is 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds of bird, so a 20 pound turkey needs about 5 days in the fridge. Working back from November 26, 2026, that bird goes in on November 21, which is 35 days after October 17.
| Turkey weight | Fridge days at 24 hours per 4 to 5 lb | Cold water hours at 30 minutes per lb | Into the fridge for November 26, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 lb | 3 days | 6 hours | November 23 |
| 16 lb | 4 days | 8 hours | November 22 |
| 20 lb | 5 days | 10 hours | November 21 |
| 24 lb | 6 days | 12 hours | November 20 |
The cold water method is faster but needs attention: 30 minutes per pound, with the water changed every half hour, which is why a 24 pound bird still takes 12 hours of somebody staying home. Neither method is safe on the counter, and a bird that thaws at room temperature for a day is the single most common holiday food poisoning story.
Shopping deadlines that hang off the date
Most supermarkets open fresh turkey orders about two weeks out and close them a couple of days before the holiday. For November 26, 2026 that means ordering by about November 18 and picking up on November 24 or 25. Pickup slots for the Tuesday and Wednesday before the holiday fill first, and the two hours before closing on Wednesday are the worst of the week.
Shipping deadlines follow the same logic in reverse. Carriers publish cutoffs for delivery by December 25, and those dates cluster in the middle of December, which is about 16 to 22 days after a late November Thanksgiving. A late Thanksgiving pushes the shopping season against those cutoffs, and 2030, with only 27 days from the holiday to Christmas, is the tightest year in the table above.
To use the calculator, set the date you are counting from, which defaults to today, and pick what you are counting toward. The first row is the number of days, the rows under it break that number into weeks, days and hours, and the last rows place Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas and New Year's Day on the same timeline.
Dates follow the federal fourth-Thursday rule and are correct for every US state and territory. Food safety timings follow USDA guidance for home kitchens. All calculations run in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
Frequently asked questions
What date is Thanksgiving in 2026?
November 26, 2026. That is the fourth Thursday of the month, 40 days after October 17, 2026. Black Friday lands on November 27 and Cyber Monday on November 30.
How many days until Thanksgiving?
From October 17, 2026 there are 40 days, which is 5 weeks and 5 days, or 960 hours. Set the countdown date to today in the calculator to get the number for the day you are reading this.
Why is Thanksgiving on a different date each year?
Federal law pins it to the fourth Thursday of November rather than to a fixed date. A month holds four or five Thursdays, so the fourth one drifts between November 22 and November 28.
What is the earliest Thanksgiving can be?
November 22. That happens when November 1 falls on a Thursday, as in 2029. The latest is November 28, when November 1 is a Friday, as in 2030.
Is Thanksgiving always the last Thursday of November?
No. It is the fourth Thursday. In years with five Thursdays in November the last one comes a week after the holiday, and that exact confusion is what pushed Congress to fix the rule in 1941.
When is Black Friday in 2026?
November 27, 2026, the day after Thanksgiving. Cyber Monday follows on November 30, which is 4 days after the holiday.
How many shopping days are there between Thanksgiving and Christmas in 2026?
29 days, from November 26 to December 25. Add the final week to New Year's Day and the whole run from the holiday is 36 days.
How do I count the days to New Year's Day?
Count to January 1 of the following year. From November 26, 2026 to January 1, 2027 is 36 days. From December 31, 2026 it is 1 day, because the count is whole calendar days between two dates.
Does the countdown include today?
No. It counts whole days between the two dates, so the day before Thanksgiving reads 1 and the holiday morning reads 0, shown as today.
How long does a 20 pound turkey take to thaw?
About 5 days in the refrigerator at 24 hours per 4 to 5 pounds. In cold water it is about 10 hours at 30 minutes per pound, with the water changed every half hour.
How far ahead should I order a fresh turkey?
A week to ten days. For a November 26, 2026 holiday, order by about November 18 and collect on November 24 or 25, since the last two days before the holiday are the busiest.
What happens in a year when November has five Thursdays?
Nothing changes for the holiday. The fourth Thursday is still Thanksgiving, so the fifth Thursday is an ordinary day. November 2028 and November 2029 both have five Thursdays, and the holiday falls on November 23 and November 22.
Does the countdown work for dates in the past?
The date rows keep working, and the count still runs forward. Enter January 1, 2027 and the Thanksgiving row points at November 25, 2027, 328 days out, while a date after the holiday points at the next year.
Is the date the same in every US state?
Yes. Thanksgiving is a federal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Only store hours and local parade times differ.
