Key takeaways
- A pound of fine gold is 14.583 troy ounces, so a pound costs spot price x 14.583
- At a spot price of $3,995 per troy ounce, one pound of pure gold is about $58,260
- A troy pound is only 12 troy ounces, about 17.7 percent less gold than the 14.583 ounces in the pound on your kitchen scale
- Karat divides the price: 14k gold runs 58.33 percent of the pure gold number, 18k runs 75 percent
- Bullion coins and bars usually carry a 2 to 6 percent premium over spot, jewelry a lot more

Why a pound of gold is not 16 troy ounces
Gold is not weighed the way flour is weighed. Flour, people and the coins on a kitchen scale use the avoirdupois pound, which is exactly 453.59237 grams (NIST Guide to the SI, Appendix B.9). Gold itself is priced by the troy ounce, which is 31.1034768 grams and about 9.7 percent heavier than the 28.3495 gram kitchen ounce.
A troy pound holds 12 troy ounces, not 16, and almost nobody prices gold in troy pounds. So the phrase a pound of gold is genuinely ambiguous. One avoirdupois pound works out to 453.59237 / 31.1034768 = 14.583 troy ounces. That is about 21.5 percent more gold than a troy pound would hold, and the same words can describe either.
Every market quote you will ever see, from a coin shop window to a futures ticker, is dollars per troy ounce of pure gold. The calculator on this page takes that quote and converts it into pounds, grams and kilograms so the per pound figure matches what a scale in your kitchen would read.
The same word also means different things in other markets, so it helps to know the four numbers a gold price quote can carry. Spot is the wholesale price for immediate delivery of fine gold. The ask is what a dealer will sell to you, and the bid is what a dealer will pay you, with the spread between them covering the round trip. The LBMA Gold Price is the twice daily benchmark in London that refiners and central banks settle against, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. A retail quote adds a premium on top of that, and the calculator's premium field is where you put the difference between the two.
The cost per pound formula
Once the units are straight, the arithmetic is one line:
cost per pound = price per troy ounce x 14.5833 x purity
Purity is the share of the metal that is gold. Pure bullion is 0.9999 fine, and karat divides it further: 18k is 18/24 = 0.75, 14k is 0.5833 and 10k is 0.4167. A dealer premium is then added on top if you are buying coins or bars rather than raw metal.
| Unit | Grams | Troy ounces | Pounds of gold at $3,995 per troy ounce |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 troy ounce | 31.1035 | 1 | $3,995 |
| 1 kitchen ounce | 28.3495 | 0.9115 | $3,641 |
| 1 gram | 1 | 0.03215 | $128.44 |
| 1 kilogram | 1,000 | 32.151 | $128,442 |
| 1 avoirdupois pound | 453.5924 | 14.583 | $58,260 |
| 1 troy pound | 373.2417 | 12 | $47,940 |
The last two rows are where people get burned. A troy pound of gold costs about $10,300 less than an avoirdupois pound at the same spot price, because it holds two and a half fewer troy ounces of metal.
Working in the other direction is the same line rearranged. A 1 kilogram bar holds 1,000 / 31.1034768 = 32.151 troy ounces, and 10 troy ounces of pure gold at $3,995 per ounce is $39,950. Multiply by the karat share and you get the metal value of any weight of jewelry, which is the number a pawn shop or jeweler will quote when they ask what the piece is worth in metal.
What a pound of gold costs at different spot prices
Gold has traded in a wide band over the past decade, from about $1,300 in 2019 to around $4,000 per troy ounce in late 2026. The table below shows what one pound of pure gold costs at several spot prices, so you can line up any quote without recalculating. (World Gold Council Goldhub price data publishes the benchmark series.)
| Spot price per troy ounce | Per gram | Cost per pound | Cost per kilogram |
|---|---|---|---|
| $2,500 | $80.38 | $36,458 | $80,380 |
| $3,000 | $96.45 | $43,750 | $96,450 |
| $3,500 | $112.53 | $51,042 | $112,530 |
| $3,995 | $128.44 | $58,260 | $128,442 |
| $4,500 | $144.68 | $65,625 | $144,680 |
Spot moves every trading day, so treat any single figure on this page as a snapshot, not a quote. The per pound figure scales exactly with the spot price: at $2,000 per ounce a pound is $29,167, and at $6,000 it is $87,500.
Karat changes the number
Bullion is fine gold. Jewelry is an alloy, and the karat stamp tells you how much of the weight is gold. That cuts the per pound cost of the metal inside a piece, because you are paying gold money only for the gold share of the weight.
| Karat | Gold content | Cost per pound at $3,995 spot | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24k (.9999) | 99.99% | $58,255 | Bullion bars and coins |
| 22k (.9167) | 91.67% | $53,407 | American Gold Eagles, high karat jewelry |
| 18k (.7500) | 75.00% | $43,695 | Fine jewelry |
| 14k (.5833) | 58.33% | $33,983 | Everyday rings and chains |
| 10k (.4167) | 41.67% | $24,277 | Budget jewelry |
A 14k chain is not a bad buy at two thirds of the gold price, but it is not a pound of gold either. One pound of 14k alloy holds only 0.5833 x 14.583 = 8.507 troy ounces of actual gold.
The karat stamp is worth reading before you compare prices, because two pieces of the same weight can hold sharply different amounts of gold. A 20 gram 18k chain holds 15 g of gold, and a 20 gram 10k chain holds 8.33 g, so the 18k piece carries close to twice the metal value even if both were made by the same jeweler.
Coins, bars and what a pound of gold looks like
No dealer sells a one pound bar. The standard retail sizes are 1 gram, 10 grams, 1 troy ounce, 10 troy ounces, 1 kilogram and 400 troy ounces, so a pound of gold sits awkwardly between the kilo bar and the big bar.
American Gold Eagles, the most traded US bullion coin, contain exactly 1 troy ounce of pure gold even though the coin itself weighs 33.931 grams, because the coin is 22 karat and the extra weight is a silver and copper hardening alloy (US Mint bullion coin programs page). A kilo bar holds 32.151 troy ounces, and a London Good Delivery bar, the size banks settle in, holds about 400 troy ounces, which is 12.44 kilograms or 27.4 pounds. One pound of gold is about a twenty seventh of that bar.
That is why cost per pound is a comparison tool more than a shopping unit. It lets you line up a coin, a chain and a kilo bar on the same footing.
Worked examples: a coin, a chain and a kilo bar
Three common purchases, all at the same $3,995 spot price, show how the pieces combine.
| Step | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 oz Gold Eagle at a 5% premium | 3,995 x 1.05 | $4,195 |
| Fine gold in a 20 g 14k chain | 20 x 0.5833 | 11.67 g |
| Melt value of that chain | 0.375 ozt x $3,995 | $1,498 |
| Troy ounces in a 1 kg bar | 1,000 / 31.1034768 | 32.1507 ozt |
| Value of a 1 kg bar | 32.1507 x $3,995 | $128,442 |
| That bar at a 2% premium | 128,442 x 1.02 | $131,011 |
The coin example shows the premium doing the work: the gold inside is worth $3,995, and the extra $200 buys minting, distribution and dealer margin. The chain example shows the opposite: the metal is worth $1,498, but retail jewelry prices are built on design and brand, and a pawn shop will offer you something close to the melt value instead. The kilo bar sits closest to spot, which is the usual trade: the bigger the bar, the smaller the percentage premium.
A second check is the reverse direction. Divide the asking price by the pure gold content and you get the effective per ounce price. A dealer asking $131,011 for a 1 kg bar is charging 32.1507 troy ounces worth $128,442, so the premium is 2 percent. A dealer asking $140,000 for the same bar is at 9 percent, which is well outside the normal band for kilo bars and worth a question.
What the spot price leaves out
Four costs sit between the spot price and what you pay or receive.
Dealer premium. Bullion coins and bars typically run 2 to 6 percent over spot depending on size and mint, with fractional coins at the top of that band. Jewelry and collectible coins can carry 20 percent or more.
Sales tax. Most states exempt investment bullion above a certain purchase size, but the rules and thresholds differ by state and change with legislative sessions, so check your own state's rule before you buy.
The buy and sell spread. Dealers buy back below spot and sell above it. On a $58,260 pound of gold, even a 2 percent round trip costs you about $1,165, which matters if you plan to resell soon.
Taxes on the gain. The IRS treats gold coins and bullion as collectibles, so long term gains are taxed at a maximum rate of 28 percent instead of the usual 15 percent top rate (IRS Topic 409 on capital gains). Dealers must also report some large bullion sales to the IRS, so keep your purchase paperwork. None of this is tax advice; confirm your own situation with a professional.
How to use the calculator
Enter the price per troy ounce from the quote in front of you, then a weight and its unit. Set the karat to match the piece, add the premium percent if the quote is over spot, and the results show the total value, the cost per pound, per gram and per kilo, and the fine gold content.
Use cost per pound of pure gold when you want a single benchmark number, and cost per pound of the material when you are comparing two pieces of the same karat. If a dealer quote per ounce works out far above the spot plus a normal premium, ask what the extra buys.
Spot prices move during trading hours and the reference price on this page is dated, so enter the current number rather than trusting the default. The calculator converts units only; it does not predict where the market goes next.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a pound of gold cost?
Multiply the spot price per troy ounce by 14.583. At $3,995 per troy ounce, one pound of pure gold is about $58,260. At $2,000 it is about $29,167, and at $6,000 it is about $87,500.
How many troy ounces are in a pound of gold?
An avoirdupois pound, the pound on a kitchen scale, holds 14.583 troy ounces. A troy pound holds only 12 troy ounces, which is why gold is never quoted in troy pounds.
How much does a gram of gold cost?
Divide the price per troy ounce by 31.1035. At $3,995 per ounce, a gram of pure gold is about $128.44, and a kilogram is about $128,442.
Why is gold weighed in troy ounces?
The troy system dates to medieval trade fairs and became the standard for precious metals. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, about 9.7 percent heavier than a kitchen ounce, so a pound of flour and a troy pound of gold do not match.
How much is a troy pound of gold worth?
A troy pound is 12 troy ounces, so at $3,995 per ounce it is $47,940. Markets do not quote troy pounds, so this figure mainly shows the trap of mixing the two pounds.
How much is a pound of 18k gold worth?
18k is 18/24, or 75 percent gold. At $3,995 spot, a pound of 18k alloy holds $43,695 of gold. A pound of 14k holds $33,983 and a pound of 10k holds $24,277.
How much does a kilogram of gold cost?
A kilogram is 32.151 troy ounces, so at $3,995 per ounce the metal is worth $128,442. Kilo bars usually carry the smallest dealer premiums of any retail size.
Is a pound of gold 12 or 16 ounces?
Neither. It is 14.583 troy ounces, because the troy ounce is heavier than the kitchen ounce. Twelve troy ounces make a troy pound, and 16 kitchen ounces make an avoirdupois pound, and the two pounds differ by about 21.5 percent.
How much does a 1 oz American Gold Eagle cost?
The coin holds exactly 1 troy ounce of pure gold even though it weighs 33.931 grams at 22 karat. At $3,995 spot plus a typical 5 percent dealer premium, it costs about $4,195.
How much is the biggest gold bar worth?
A London Good Delivery bar holds about 400 troy ounces, or 27.4 pounds. At $3,995 per ounce that is about $1,598,000. No retail buyer handles that size; banks settle in it.
Does jewelry sell at the gold spot price?
No. Retail jewelry is priced on design, brand and craftsmanship, and the metal inside is only part of the tag. When you resell, buyers typically pay close to melt value, which is spot times the gold content of the weight.
Do I pay tax when I sell gold for a gain?
The IRS classifies gold coins and bullion as collectibles, and long term gains on collectibles are taxed at a maximum rate of 28 percent. Short term gains are taxed as ordinary income. Confirm your own situation with a tax professional.
What premium do dealers charge over spot?
Bullion coins and bars typically run 2 to 6 percent over spot, with fractional coins at the high end. Jewelry and rare coins carry far more. Compare a quote against the calculator's per ounce figure to see the premium you are being asked to pay.
How do I compare two gold quotes fairly?
Convert each quote to price per troy ounce of fine gold first: divide the total by the troy ounces of pure gold you receive, then compare that number with spot plus a normal premium. The calculator's per ounce line does this conversion for you.
