Half Birthday Calculator

A half birthday falls six calendar months after the date you were born, on the same day of the month when that day exists. Someone born March 10 has a half birthday on September 10, and a May 31 birthday shifts to November 30. The next one can sit 181 to 184 days out.

Type a birth date and the calculator shows the half birthday six calendar months later, the weekday it lands on, a countdown in days and hours, and the half age, with a clamp for months that run short.

What a half birthday is

A half birthday is the date exactly six calendar months after the day you were born. If you were born on March 10, your half birthday is September 10. It marks the midpoint between two full birthdays, the day you cross from one age and a half into the next whole year, or from a whole year into the next half.

Nobody hands out cards for it, but the date has real uses. Parents of kids born in late December celebrate in late June, when the weather allows an outdoor party and friends are not away for the holidays. Dog owners mark the six month point between annual birthdays, since a dog ages faster than a person. Sports leagues and school districts compare exact ages at cutoffs, and a six month offset shows up in contracts, leases and job reviews that run on a half year cycle.

The calculator below works the date out from any starting date, not just a birth date, and it also counts down to the next one in days and hours.

How the half birthday date is worked out

The rule is simple to state: keep the day of the month, add six to the month, and roll the year forward when the month passes December. A March 10 birthday becomes September 10. A September 4 birthday becomes March 4 of the next year.

Months are not all the same length, so the rule needs one fallback. When the target month is shorter than the day you were born, the date moves back to the last day of that month. Born on May 31? November has 30 days, so the half birthday is November 30. Born on August 31? The half birthday is February 28, or February 29 in a leap year. This clamp is the convention used by the calculator and by most calendar libraries; the competing convention pushes the date forward to the first of the following month instead.

Birth dateHalf birthdayWhat happened
May 31November 30November has 30 days, so the day clamps back one
August 31February 28February is short; February 29 in a leap year
October 31April 30April has 30 days
March 31September 30September has 30 days
December 31June 30June has 30 days
June 30December 30No shift needed, December is long enough

Some people use a different convention and push the date forward to the first of the next month instead, which would turn August 31 into March 1. Both answers appear in the wild. The clamp back is the one this page uses, because it keeps the half birthday inside the same six month window and never lands after the true midpoint by more than a day or two.

Half a year in days, not months

Calendar months and day counts drift apart, which is why a half birthday can fall 181 to 184 days after a birthday. A common year has 365 days, so half of it is 365 / 2 = 182.5 days. A leap year has 366 days, so its half is 366 / 2 = 183 days.

Turn that into smaller units and the numbers get big fast. Half a common year is 182.5 x 24 = 4,380 hours, and 4,380 x 60 = 262,800 minutes. Half a leap year is 183 x 24 = 4,392 hours, or 263,520 minutes. Six months of a pregnancy, a lease or a school year all sit in that same 181 to 184 day band, even though each one is called half a year.

Minutes262,800263,520
Seconds15,768,00015,811,200
Weeks26 weeks plus 0.5 day26 weeks plus 1 day

Because 182 days is exactly 26 weeks, a half birthday reached by day count often lands on the same weekday as the birthday. October 26, 2026 is a Monday, and 182 days later is Monday, April 26, 2027. The calendar month route and the day count route agree on that date, which is a happy accident of where the short months sit.

Worked examples

Example 1: a plain mid year date. Born March 10, 1997. Add six months and the half birthday is September 10, 1997, which was a Wednesday and 184 days after the birth date. On September 10, 2026 that person turns 29 and a half. The next one, September 10, 2027, makes it 30 and a half.

Example 2: a day that does not exist. Born May 31, 1990. November 31 is not a real date, so the clamp puts the half birthday on Friday, November 30, 1990, 183 days after birth. Every year after that the half birthday stays on November 30, and the full birthday stays on May 31.

Example 3: a leap day birth. Born February 29, 2004. Six months later is August 29, 2004, a Sunday, 182 days after birth. The half birthday is August 29 in every later year, leap or not, because August always has 29 days. Only the full birthday has to cope with February's missing day.

Example 4: counting from today. From October 26, 2026, six months lands on April 26, 2027. The legs add up as 5 + 30 + 31 + 31 + 28 + 31 + 26 = 182 days. That is 26 weeks, so the weekday is Monday at both ends, and the count in hours is 182 x 24 = 4,368.

Half age milestones

The half age is the number people say out loud: 29 and a half, 45 and a half, 6 and a half. It is the whole number of years completed at the half birthday plus 0.5. For a February 14, 1996 birth date, the half birthday lands on August 14 each year, and the age on that date is the birthday age plus six months.

Half birthdayHalf ageWhole age reached the February before
August 14, 19971.51
August 14, 201418.518
August 14, 201721.521
August 14, 202630.530
August 14, 202731.531

Some of those half ages carry weight. 18.5 is the middle of the first year of adulthood, 21.5 the middle of the year after the legal drinking age, and 65.5 the middle of the year that many retirement plans use as a start line. A half age is not a legal age for anything in the United States; it is a label for a date, not a status.

The pattern holds for any birth date, including clamped ones. A May 31 birth date turns 36 on May 31, 2026 and 36 and a half on November 30, 2026, even though the half birthday sits one day short of the true midpoint.

Countdown, weekdays and the next half birthday

The calculator counts from today, or from any date you type, to the next half birthday on the calendar. For a February 14 birth date and a start of October 26, 2026, the next half birthday is August 14, 2027, which is 292 days away, and 292 x 24 = 7,008 hours. August 14, 2027 falls on a Saturday.

Weekdays drift from year to year. A common year is 365 days, one day more than 52 full weeks, so the same calendar date moves forward one weekday each year, and two when a leap day falls in between. A half birthday on a Saturday this year will land on a Sunday next year and a Monday the year after, until a leap year skips it forward an extra day.

That drift is why a half birthday party is easier to plan by date than by weekday. Pick the Saturday closest to the date and the celebration stays within a couple of days of the true midpoint. For a child born in late December, a June half birthday party also dodges the holiday season, the school break and the birthday gift fatigue that comes with a December 25 date.

Where half birthdays get used

Birthday parties for kids with holiday birthdays are the most common use. A December 26 birthday sits in the middle of winter break, so families move the party to June 26 and invite the class. Summer babies get the same treatment in reverse, with a winter half birthday that lets them bring cupcakes to school.

Pets are the second big one. A dog born in March turns 6 months old in September, and many owners mark that date because the first year carries most of the growth. Shelters use the same six month offset to estimate an adult size for a mixed breed puppy.

Adults use half birthdays for quieter reasons: a six month review of a goal set on a birthday, a mid year check on a savings plan, a lease renewal that lands half a year after move in, or a reminder to book a dentist visit twice a year. Anniversary math works the same way, since six months after a wedding date is the midpoint of the year that follows.

One caution on gifts and money: a half birthday is not a tax date, a benefits date or a legal age. For anything that touches eligibility, use the full birthday and confirm the rule with the agency that runs the program.

For the calendar rules behind the dates, the Social Security Administration benefit calculator shows how a birth date turns into an age in years and months, time.gov from NIST carries the official US clock that any countdown is measured against, and the NIST Time and Frequency Division keeps the second that makes a day 24 x 60 x 60 = 86,400 seconds long.

Frequently asked questions

What is a half birthday?

It is the date six calendar months after your birth date, keeping the same day of the month. Born March 10, your half birthday is September 10. It marks the halfway point between two full birthdays, when you reach an age and a half.

How many days after my birthday is my half birthday?

Between 181 and 184 days, depending on which months sit between the two dates. Half of a common year is 182.5 days and half of a leap year is 183 days, so most half birthdays land close to 182 days out.

I was born on the 31st. When is my half birthday?

It clamps back to the last day of the shorter month. May 31 becomes November 30, August 31 becomes February 28 (February 29 in a leap year), and October 31 becomes April 30. The full birthday stays on the 31st.

I was born on February 29. When is my half birthday?

August 29, in every year. Six months after February 29 is August 29, and August always has that day, so a leap day birth has a steady half birthday even though the full birthday shifts to February 28 in common years.

How old are you at your half birthday?

Your whole age plus 0.5. Born February 14, 1996, you are 30 and a half on August 14, 2026 and 31 and a half on August 14, 2027. The half age is a label for the date, not a legal age.

Is the half birthday the same date every year?

Yes, with one exception. The half birthday keeps the same month and day each year, so March 10 stays September 10. Only a birth date that clamps to February 28 moves to February 29 when the year is a leap year.

How many hours are in half a year?

4,380 hours in a common year, from 182.5 x 24, and 4,392 hours in a leap year. In minutes that is 262,800 and 263,520, and in seconds 15,768,000 and 15,811,200.

What is the difference between a half birthday and a golden birthday?

A half birthday is six months after your birth date. A golden birthday is the year your age matches the day of the month you were born, so someone born on the 24th has a golden birthday when they turn 24. The two can land on the same date.

Can my half birthday fall on my birthday?

No. The two dates sit six months apart, so they never share a day. The closest they can get is one day, when a clamp pulls a 31st back to a 30th in a month that is one day shorter than the gap.

How many days until my next half birthday?

It depends on today's date. For a February 14 birth date counted from October 26, 2026, the next half birthday is August 14, 2027, which is 292 days or 7,008 hours away, on a Saturday.

Why does the calculator move my date to the end of the month?

Because November 31, February 30 and similar dates do not exist. Clamping back to the last real day keeps the half birthday inside the six month window, which is the convention most calendar software and the Social Security Administration use.

Do leap years change my half birthday?

Only for birth dates in late August, when the half birthday falls in February. August 31 gives February 28 in a common year and February 29 in a leap year. Every other birth date keeps the same half birthday in every year.

What weekday will my half birthday fall on?

It moves forward one weekday each year and two across a leap year, because 365 days is one day more than 52 weeks. A Saturday half birthday this year becomes a Sunday next year, then a Monday, then a Tuesday across a leap year.

Do schools and sports leagues use half birthdays?

Some do. Districts with a September cutoff sometimes enroll a child a year later if the birth date sits close to the line, and youth leagues compare exact ages at a cutoff date. A half birthday is a handy checkpoint at 6 months and 18 months, though no rule depends on it.
