How Many Days Until Calculator

From October 17, 2026, there are 76 days until January 1, 2027, or 77 if today counts as day one. That is 10 weeks and 6 days, and 51 business days once weekends and four federal holidays come out. The count moves at midnight, once a day.

Pick a target date to see the days left, the same count with today included, the weeks and months, and how many of those days are weekdays or business days.

What the countdown measures

A date is a fixed point on a calendar, but a count of days depends on where you start and whether the start day gets a number. This tool takes two dates and returns the number of full calendar days between them. Leave the start date on today, pick a target, and you get the number people mean when they ask how many days until a trip, a birthday, a closing or a filing deadline.

The count runs on calendar dates, not on hours. October 17 to October 18 is one day even if only a few minutes have passed since midnight. That is why the figure on this page can be right at 12:01 a.m. and stay right until the next midnight, and why a countdown that ticks in hours and minutes will disagree with it by a fraction of a day.

Which midnight applies? Yours. The clock your device uses is synced to the federal time standard kept by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and its official US time service is where you check it if a deadline is close enough to matter.

One more thing worth knowing before you read the number: a count of days ignores business hours. If the thing you are waiting for happens at 9 a.m. on the target date, the last full day of waiting ends the night before, so the practical count is one less than the calendar count. Banks, clerks and offices close, and that is what the business day line in the results is for.

Inclusive and exclusive counts: the one day gap

Two people can ask the same question and expect answers that differ by one. Days until usually means the number of sleeps, so the day you are standing in does not count. A party on Saturday, asked on Wednesday, is three days away: Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Count it the way a hotel counts nights and you land on three.

The other convention counts today as day one. Same Wednesday, same Saturday party, and the answer becomes four, because Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday are all days that the event sits ahead of you. Neither answer is wrong. The gap is always exactly one day, and this calculator shows both so you can use whichever one matches how you think about the wait.

The convention matters most over short windows. For a wedding two years out, one day is noise. For a shipping cutoff that closes tomorrow morning, being off by one day is the whole problem, and the person who counts today usually misses the cutoff.

July 4, 202726026137 weeks 1 day

Read the table from a start date of October 17, 2026 and the pattern is easy to see. The left count is the number of full days between the two dates. The next column adds one, and the last column is that same span broken into weeks plus leftover days.

Worked example: 76 days to January 1, 2027

Start on Saturday, October 17, 2026 and aim at Friday, January 1, 2027. The difference between the two dates is 76 days. That is the number of times the date changes before you arrive, and it is also the number of sleeps if you go to bed each night in between.

Turn 76 days into weeks by dividing by 7. You get 10 full weeks with 6 days left over, which is the same as 10 weeks and 6 days. Divide by the average month of 30.44 days and you get 2.5 months, which matches the calendar reading of 2 months and 15 days if you count from October 17 to December 17 and then 15 more days to January 1.

Now strip out the days that are not working days. Of the 76 days, 55 fall Monday through Friday and 21 fall on a Saturday or Sunday. Four federal holidays sit inside the window: Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day itself. Take those out and 51 business days remain, which is the number to quote if you are waiting on a bank, a permit office or a shipment that only moves on weekdays.

Weeks, months and the approximations that hold

Weeks are exact, months are not. A week is always 7 days, so the weeks figure never drifts. A month is 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, so any single number you use for a month is an average and will be off by a day or two on a real calendar. The 30.44 figure is the average length of a month across a full leap cycle, and it is the number to use when you only need a rough scale.

That is why two month counts can disagree without either being wrong. February makes a 60 day wait look like 2.1 months, while a span that crosses March and April makes the same 60 days look like 1.9 months. If the answer has to be exact, count days. If it is going into a sentence about how far away something is, months are fine.

The hours figure is the one people misread. It counts 24 hour blocks between midnights, so it stays correct through a daylight saving change even though one of those days is 23 hours long and another is 25. If you need real elapsed hours across a clock change, subtract an hour for the spring shift and add one for the fall shift.

Business days: weekends plus federal holidays

A business day is a weekday that is not a federal holiday. Weekends are easy to remove with a loop over the calendar. Holidays are harder, because they move. Some are pinned to a date, like Christmas, and some float, like Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November. When a fixed holiday lands on a Saturday it is observed on the Friday before, and when it lands on a Sunday it is observed on the Monday after, which can pull a holiday into or out of your window.

The official list comes from the Office of Personnel Management, which publishes federal holidays by year. Four of them fall inside the October 17 to January 1 window:

HolidayDateWeekdayRemoved from the count
Veterans DayNovember 11, 2026Wednesday1
Thanksgiving DayNovember 26, 2026Thursday1
Christmas DayDecember 25, 2026Friday1
New Year's DayJanuary 1, 2027Friday1

Four weekdays come out of the 55, which leaves 51. Columbus Day on October 12 falls before the start date and does not count, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18, 2027 falls after the target. State holidays are a separate list and vary widely, so a count that has to match a state office needs those dates added by hand.

The holiday field in the calculator takes a number, not a list. Look up how many holidays your window touches, type that number in, and the business day line drops by that many. If a holiday lands on a weekend it should not be subtracted at all, since the weekend was already removed.

Why the number changes at midnight, and across time zones

The count refreshes when your local date changes. Open the page at 11:58 p.m. and the answer can be one number, then 11:59 becomes 12:00 and the same target is a day closer. Nothing about the target moved. The start did.

Time zones create a second kind of gap. If the event is in another state or another country, its midnight is not yours. A wedding at 4 p.m. in Denver is three hours behind a wedding at 4 p.m. in New York, so the last day of waiting ends later for the guest flying in from the east. For a same country count the difference is usually small enough to ignore. For an international flight or a visa deadline, count in the target city's local date and leave a buffer of at least a day.

Daylight saving adds a third wrinkle that is smaller than people expect. The spring change removes an hour and the fall change adds one, but the date still flips at midnight, so a day count is unaffected. Only hour counts and clock times shift. That is a good reason to plan travel in dates and not in hours.

Counting backward and planning with lead times

The same arithmetic runs in reverse. Swap the dates and you get days since an event, which is what people want for an anniversary, a quit date, a sobriety count or a project start. A negative result in this calculator means the target has already passed, and the size of the number tells you how long ago it was.

Lead times are where a day count earns its keep. A few official ones are worth keeping in mind. The IRS filing deadline for individual returns is April 15 in most years, and an extension moves the filing date to October 15 without moving the payment date. Routine passport processing is quoted in weeks, not days, and the State Department publishes its current estimate because it changes with demand. A venue for a wedding is usually booked 12 months out, and a moving company 8 weeks out.

Put a target date in, read the weeks figure, and compare it with the lead time. If the answer is 5 weeks and the quoted processing time is 6 to 8 weeks, the plan has a problem that a calendar catches and a to do list does not. That single comparison is why people keep a countdown on the fridge.

Edge cases: leap years, month ends and past dates

Leap years add February 29, and that one extra day shifts every fixed date after it by one weekday. A date that falls on a Friday in 2026 falls on a Saturday in 2027, because 365 days is 52 weeks plus one day. Two years with a leap day in between shift the weekday by two. The calculator handles this automatically, since it compares real calendar dates rather than counting forward in blocks of 365.

Month ends are the other classic trap. January 31 to March 1 is not two months, it is 29 days in a non leap year, because February has no 31st. Adding months to a date by hand gets this wrong more often than people admit. Counting days avoids the issue entirely.

Past dates return a negative number rather than an error. That is deliberate. A countdown to a deadline that has already passed should read as negative, because the useful information is how far past it you are. If you only want the size of the gap, the absolute value is the same number without the sign.

Frequently asked questions

How many days until January 1, 2027?

From October 17, 2026 there are 76 days, or 77 if you count today as day one. That is 10 weeks and 6 days, 55 weekdays, and 51 business days after four federal holidays are removed.

Does the count include today?

Not by default. The default answer is the number of full days between the start date and the target, which is the same as the number of sleeps. Tick the box and today becomes day one, which adds exactly 1 to the total.

How many weeks is 76 days?

10 weeks and 6 days, which is 10.86 weeks in decimal form. Divide any day count by 7 for the decimal figure, then take the remainder for the leftover days.

How many months is 76 days?

About 2.5 months using the 30.44 day average month, or 2 months and 15 days on the calendar from October 17 to January 1. Months are not a fixed length, so any month figure is an approximation.

How do you count business days between two dates?

Count the weekdays, then subtract the federal holidays that fall on a weekday inside the window. For October 17, 2026 to January 1, 2027 that is 55 weekdays minus 4 holidays, which leaves 51 business days.

Why is my countdown one day off from another site?

The two sites are using different conventions. One counts today as day one and the other does not, which shifts the answer by exactly 1. A second cause is time zone: a site that counts in UTC flips its date at a different moment than yours.

How many days until Christmas 2026?

69 days from October 17, 2026, or 70 if you count today. Christmas Day falls on a Friday that year, so the weekend before it is December 19 and 20.

How many days until April 15, 2027?

180 days from October 17, 2026, which is 25 weeks and 5 days. April 15 is the usual federal individual tax filing deadline, and it falls on a Thursday that year.

Does daylight saving change the number of days?

No. The date still changes at midnight, so the day count is the same. Only the number of elapsed hours shifts, by 1 hour in the spring and 1 hour in the fall.

What if the target date has already passed?

You get a negative number that shows how many days ago it was. The size of the number is the gap, and the minus sign just marks the direction.

How many days until July 4, 2027?

260 days from October 17, 2026, or 261 with today counted. That is 37 weeks and 1 day, and July 4 falls on a Sunday that year.

Does the calculator count weekends as days?

Yes. The main count is every calendar day. The weekday and weekend lines break that same total into two parts so you can see how much of the wait is working time.

Is the day count affected by leap years?

Only by the extra day itself. February 29 adds one day to any span that crosses it, and it also shifts the weekday of every date after it by one.

How accurate is the business day count for a state office?

It is exact for weekends and federal holidays. State holidays are not included, so add those dates by hand if the office you are dealing with closes for them.
