How Much to Tip at an All Inclusive Resort

Budget $10 per person per day at most all-inclusive resorts, so a couple on a seven night stay carries $140 in staff tips. Add $20 for a private transfer driver and the week comes to $160. Sandals and Beaches ban tipping entirely except for butlers and spa therapists, so check your resort's policy before you pack cash.

Set a daily tip budget per traveller, add butler, spa and transfer tips, and see the cash to carry for your stay.

All inclusive covers the food, not the thanks

The phrase all inclusive tells you what you can eat, drink and do without opening your wallet. It does not reliably tell you what the staff earn, and in most resorts the answer is that gratuities are either partly included or not included at all. A bartender in Cancun and a housekeeper in Punta Cana are usually paid a wage that assumes tips will fill the gap.

That gap is why the question comes up every trip. You are never handed a bill, so there is no 15 percent line to calculate and no server standing over you at the end of a meal. Instead there is a running series of small interactions across five or six days, each one with somebody who is being paid to make your week pleasant, and no natural moment to settle up.

The practical answer is a daily cash budget instead of a percentage. Set an amount per person per day, split it into small bills before you leave, and hand it out as the week goes. Budget $5 to $15 per person per day at most properties, with $10 being a comfortable middle, and the whole subject stops being awkward.

How much to budget per person per day

Three levels cover almost every trip, and all three are per traveller per day rather than per room.

Two travellers for seven days at $10 each comes to 2 x 7 x $10 = $140. Add a private transfer driver at $20 and the week is $160. At the light level the same week is $70 plus $20, and at the generous level it is $210 plus $20. Because these are per day figures, a long weekend costs less in total but not less per day, which is worth remembering when you compare a three night and a ten night trip.

The calculator above pools this into one number, then adds the three items that sit outside the daily pool: butler service, spa treatments and your airport transfer driver. Those three are priced per event or per night rather than per head, so keeping them separate keeps the pool honest.

Who gets what, and when to hand it over

Below are the customary ranges reported across published resort tipping guides. They are conventions rather than rules, and none of them is a substitute for what your own resort tells you at check in.

WhoWhenTypical amountSeven nights for two people
HousekeepingEach morning, left on the pillow or nightstand$2 to $5 a day, per room$14 to $35
Server at mealsAt the end of each meal you sit down to$2 to $5 a meal$42 to $105 at three meals a day
BartenderPer round, or $5 to $10 to start a pool session$1 to $2 a round$30 to $60 over a week
BellmanOn arrival when bags are delivered$5 to $10$5 to $10
Pool or beach attendantWhen they set you up and again if they keep it going$2 to $5 a day$14 to $35
Butler, where your room includes oneAt the end of the stay, in an envelope$20 to $50 per butler a day$140 to $350
Spa therapistAfter the treatment10 to 20 percent of the service$10 to $40 a treatment
Excursion guide and driverAt the end of the tour, off resort$5 to $10 a person$10 to $20 a tour

Housekeeping is the one people forget, and it is also the one where timing matters most. Leave it daily rather than as a lump sum on the last morning, because the person who cleaned your room on Monday may not be the person who cleans it on Friday. The same logic applies to any role staffed on rotation.

What a week costs at three levels

This table holds the daily pool for two travellers over seven nights, then layers on the two extras that most often catch people out. It uses a couple sharing one room.

What you are budgetingLight, $5 a dayStandard, $10 a dayGenerous, $15 a day
Pooled staff tips for seven nights$70.00$140.00$210.00
Plus a private transfer driver at $20$90.00$160.00$230.00
Plus two spa treatments at $10 each$110.00$180.00$250.00
Plus a butler team at $40 a day$390.00$460.00$530.00

The jump in the last row is the point worth noticing. Butler service is priced per day, not per stay, and a butler team is usually two or three people, so seven nights at $40 a day is $280 before anything else you handed out. If your room category includes a butler, put that money in the trip budget up front rather than discovering it on the final morning.

The resorts where tipping is banned

Some brands mean it when they say included. Sandals and Beaches are the clearest case: their own guidance states that tips and gratuities are included in the package with the exception of personal butlers and massage therapists, and that tipping wait staff, bartenders, concierge, entertainment team members, cleaners and other staff is not allowed because it has already been factored into your booking. Staff can face discipline for accepting cash.

Those two exceptions are real and worth budgeting for. Sandals publishes the range its own guests use, which is roughly $20 to $50 per butler per day, and notes that a butler team normally has two or three members. Tipping the butler weekly or on the last day are both acceptable, and cash handed over personally is preferred. Read the policy on the Sandals travel checklist before you fly, since local rules at individual resorts can differ.

Policy you will meetWhat it meansWhat to budgetWhat to ask at check in
Gratuities included and tipping prohibitedMost staff cannot accept cashButlers and spa therapists onlyWhether your room category includes a butler
Gratuities included but tipping customaryA pooled distribution exists, and cash on top is normal$5 to $15 a person a dayWhether the pool reaches all staff
Charged extras priced separatelySpa, premium dining and excursions carry their own service charge10 to 20 percent of those billsWhether a service charge is already added

The third row catches people who assume everything is prepaid. A couples massage or a wine pairing dinner often arrives with a service charge already on the check, and adding 20 percent on top of that is double tipping. Look at the receipt before you write a number.

Butlers, spa treatments and excursions are the exceptions

Three categories sit outside whatever the daily pool covers, and two of them exist even at resorts that ban tipping outright.

Butlers. A butler does genuinely individual work: reserving chairs, delivering meals, drawing baths, arranging surprises. Every published policy carves them out, including the strictest no tipping brands. Plan $20 to $50 per butler per day and hand it over at the end in an envelope. A team of two working a seven night stay at $40 a day is $280.

Spa therapists. Same carve out, same logic. Many resorts add a service charge automatically to the treatment price, which goes to the spa collectively rather than to your therapist. Tip the person who treated you directly, in cash, after the service. Budget $10 to $40 depending on the length and price of the treatment.

Anyone off property. Excursion guides, boat crews and the driver who meets you at the airport are frequently not resort employees at all, so the included gratuities never reach them. Budget $5 to $10 a person for a tour guide, and $10 to $20 for a private transfer driver on a long run. At no tipping resorts, this is often the only cash you will hand to anyone at all.

Cash, envelopes and timing

Bring more small bills than you think you need, because you cannot get change from a resort bar at eight in the morning and nobody wants to break a $50 for a tip.

US dollars are accepted in the great majority of Caribbean and Mexican resort areas, and often preferred, but local currency is welcome too and sometimes gets a better exchange for the person receiving it. Either way, cash beats adding gratuities to a room bill, which can be pooled, taxed or delayed.

Where these amounts come from, and how to check your own resort

The $5 to $15 per person per day range, the $2 to $5 housekeeping amount and the $1 to $2 per drink figures are the ranges consistently reported across published resort tipping guides, and $10 a person a day is the figure most commonly given as comfortable for a couple at a typical property. The Sandals policy details and the $20 to $50 per butler per day range come from Sandals' own published guidance.

Resort policy changes, destination norms differ, and individual properties make exceptions for individual roles. Some allow tips for cabana attendants, some for servers at private dinners, and some at particular locations only. Before you fly, search your resort's name plus tipping policy, read its pre arrival email, and ask at the front desk on day one. One question at check in saves an awkward week of guessing.

These are customary planning amounts, not rules, and they are not what any worker is owed. Where a resort prohibits tipping, follow the resort's policy. Where a service charge already appears on a bill, do not tip twice.

Frequently asked questions

How much do you tip at an all inclusive resort?

Budget $5 to $15 per person per day, with $10 being comfortable at most properties. Two travellers for seven nights at $10 each is $140, plus about $20 for a private transfer driver.

Are tips included at all inclusive resorts?

Usually not fully. Gratuities are included at some brands, Sandals and Beaches among them, and tipping is prohibited there. At most resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean, tips are customary on top of the package and staff wages assume them.

Can you tip at Sandals?

Only two groups. Sandals states that gratuities are included except for personal butlers and massage therapists, and tipping wait staff, bartenders, concierge, cleaners and entertainment staff is not allowed. Butler tips run about $20 to $50 per butler per day.

How much do you tip housekeeping at an all inclusive?

$2 to $5 per room per day, left each morning rather than at checkout. The person cleaning your room on Monday may not be the person cleaning it on Friday, so leaving it daily makes sure it reaches the right people.

How much do you tip a bartender at an all inclusive?

$1 to $2 a round, or hand over $5 to $10 at the start of a pool or beach session if you plan to stay there. The upfront tip tends to get remembered for the rest of the day.

How much do you tip a butler at an all inclusive?

$20 to $50 per butler per day, handed over at the end of the stay in an envelope. A butler team usually has two or three people, so seven nights at $40 a day comes to $280.

Do you tip the airport transfer driver?

Yes, $10 to $20 for a private transfer on a long run, and $5 to $10 a person on a shared shuttle. Transfer drivers are often contracted rather than resort staff, so included gratuities never reach them.

How much cash should I bring for a week?

About $160 for two travellers tipping at $10 a person a day plus a $20 transfer tip. Order it as $1, $5 and $10 notes before you fly, since resort bars cannot break a $50 in the morning.

Should I tip in US dollars or local currency?

US dollars are accepted and often preferred throughout most Caribbean and Mexican resort areas. Local currency is welcome too and can be better for the recipient. Avoid adding gratuities to your room bill.

Do you tip at meals at an all inclusive?

$2 to $5 a meal for anyone who serves you at a sit down restaurant. Buffet staff who bring drinks and clear plates are worth $1 to $2 at the table. There is no percentage to work out, since there is no bill.

How much do you tip a spa therapist?

10 to 20 percent of the treatment, or $10 to $40 depending on length. Resorts often add a service charge that goes to the spa collectively, so tip your therapist in cash after the service.

What about excursion guides outside the resort?

$5 to $10 per person for a guide, and $5 to $10 for the driver. These workers are usually not resort employees, so nothing included in your package reaches them.

Is it rude not to tip at an all inclusive?

No, particularly at resorts that prohibit it or publish that gratuities are included. Staff will rarely refuse anything offered, so the policy and your budget decide it, not a sense of obligation.

How much should a family of four budget?

Use the same per person daily rate. Four travellers for seven nights at $10 each is $280, plus about $20 for the transfer. Kids do not reduce the rate, since the same staff serve them.

Should I tip for a three night stay?

Yes, but proportionally less, because the rate is per day. Two travellers for three nights at the generous $15 level is $90, which is less than the standard level over a full week.
