Months Between Dates Calculator

March 1, 2025 to March 1, 2026 is 12 whole months, or 365 days. The calculator subtracts field by field, so January 1 to December 31 of the same year is 11 months and 30 days, not 12. It measures the gap between two dates and never counts both endpoints.

Type any two dates and see how many whole calendar months sit between them, plus a full years, months and days breakdown you can check by hand.

What "months between dates" means

A month is not a fixed number of days. It can be 28, 29, 30 or 31, and February changes length every four years. That is why two people can both be right when one says "there are three months between these dates" and the other says "no, there are two", they are counting different things.

This calculator gives you both readings at once. It counts whole calendar months completed, the way a landlord, a bank or a court counts them, and it also shows the full breakdown in years, months and days plus the raw day count so you can check the arithmetic yourself.

Everything runs inside your browser. The dates you type are never uploaded, logged or stored anywhere.

How the counting works

The method is plain calendar subtraction, not 30-day arithmetic. Take the later date and subtract the earlier one field by field: year minus year, month minus month, day minus day. If the days come out negative, borrow the length of the month before the end date and take one away from the months. If the months come out negative, borrow 12 and take one away from the years.

That is the same rule used to work out age in years, months and days, and it is the rule most contracts, leases and government forms quietly assume.

What it deliberately does not do is pretend every month has 30 days. A calculator built on 30-day months will tell you that January 1 to December 31 is 12 months, which is wrong, it is 11 whole months and 30 days. That one-month error is the single most common complaint people have about date tools.

The whole-month count ignores leftover days entirely. From January 1 to January 31 you have completed 0 whole months, because the next month boundary has not arrived. From January 1 to February 1 you have completed exactly 1.

Worked example: a one-year lease

Say you signed a lease on March 1, 2025 and it runs to March 1, 2026. Subtracting field by field gives 1 year, 0 months and 0 days, which is 12 whole months. In raw days that is 365, because no February 29 falls inside the range. In weeks it is 52 weeks and 1 day.

Now try a longer gap: June 10, 2023 to October 16, 2026. Years: 2026 − 2023 = 3. Months: 10 − 6 = 4. Days: 16 − 10 = 6. Nothing goes negative, so the answer is 3 years, 4 months and 6 days, which is 40 whole months and 6 leftover days. Total days: 1,224. Total weeks: 174 weeks and 6 days. Total hours: 29,376.

Notice how the two answers differ in feel. "40 months" sounds like a long stretch; "3 years and 4 months" sounds like the same thing said differently. They are the same number. The calculator shows both because different paperwork asks for different formats.

Quick reference table

These are the exact results the calculator produces for a set of common date pairs. Use them to sanity-check your own inputs.

Date pairWhole monthsYears, months, daysTotal days

Oct 16, 2026 → Jan 14, 202720y 2m 29d90

The two rows that surprise people are the third and fourth. A full calendar year of dates is 11 months plus a tail, and a leap-day start can never line up with a non-leap end, so it also lands one day short.

Whole months versus rounded-up months

Billing is where the difference bites. Suppose a trial runs from January 1 to January 31. That is 30 days, 0 whole months, but 1 month if you round any partial month up. A company that rounds up charges you for a month; a company that counts whole months charges you nothing.

Rent is usually whole months: move in on the 15th and most landlords charge a prorated amount for the first month rather than a full one. Loan statements almost always quote whole months remaining, which is why a payoff figure can look "a month early", the final partial month is real, it just has not completed yet.

To round up by hand, look at the leftover days. If there is any leftover at all, add one to the whole-month count. The calculator shows the leftover days separately so you can do that in your head in a second. If you need the opposite, a count that ignores leftover days completely, just use the whole-month figure as printed.

One more wrinkle: adding months to a date is not the reverse of counting them. "Three months from January 31" has no obvious answer, because April 31 does not exist. Most systems land on April 30, some roll forward to May 1. Counting months between two fixed dates never has that problem, which is why it is the safer way to compare contract terms.

Leap years, months with 31 days and other traps

Three details trip people up when they check a date tool by hand.

If you are doing this for anything that has to hold up, a contract dispute, a visa deadline, a statute of limitations, confirm the convention the document uses before you rely on a number. Leap seconds and official timekeeping are handled by the NIST Time and Frequency Division, and a plain-English date calculator for adding and subtracting days is at timeanddate.com's date calculator. Neither changes the month arithmetic, but both are worth knowing about when precision matters.

What people use this for

The same four or five jobs come up again and again.

One thing this tool will not do is tell you whether a deadline is legally met. It measures the gap between two dates. Whether that gap satisfies a rule is a question for the contract or the agency involved, not a calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many months are between January 15, 2024 and January 15, 2026?

Exactly 24 whole months. That is 2 years, 0 months and 0 days, or 731 days, because 2024 was a leap year and added one extra day.

How many months are between March 1, 2025 and September 1, 2025?

6 whole months, 0 days. Total days is 184. The answer is clean because both dates fall on the same day number of the month.

Why does January 1 to December 31 come out as 11 months and not 12?

Because the year is not finished until January 1 of the next year. From January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025 is 11 whole months and 30 days, which is 364 days. A full 12 months would land on January 1, 2026.

How many months are between February 29, 2024 and February 28, 2025?

11 whole months and 30 days, or 365 days. February 29 only exists in leap years, so there is no February 29, 2025 to land on. The calendar has to fall back one day.

How many months is 90 days?

About 2 months and 29 days, or 2.96 months on average. It depends on which months you cross: 90 days starting October 16, 2026 lands on January 14, 2027, which is 2 whole months and 29 days.

Is there a difference between whole months and rounded-up months?

Yes, and it matters for money. From January 1 to January 31 is 0 whole months but 1 month if you round up. Most leases, loans and subscription credits count whole months, while some invoices and trials bill any partial month as a full one.

How many months are in a year and a half?

18 months. One year is 12 months, half a year is 6, so 12 + 6 = 18. In days that is roughly 547 to 549 depending on whether a February 29 falls inside the range.

Does this calculator count the first day and the last day?

No. It measures the gap between the two dates, the same way age works. From March 1 to March 2 is 1 day, not 2. If you need the inclusive count, add one day to the result.

How many months is a 12-month lease if it starts March 1?

It ends on March 1 of the following year and covers 12 whole months, or 365 days in a normal year. Start it on March 1, 2025 and it ends March 1, 2026 with 52 weeks and 1 day inside.

How many months is 1,224 days?

40 whole months and 6 days, or 3 years, 4 months and 6 days. That is the gap from June 10, 2023 to October 16, 2026. In weeks it is 174 weeks and 6 days.

Why do different websites give different answers for the same dates?

Three reasons: some use 30-day months, some count both the start and end day, and some round any partial month up to a full one. This tool uses real calendar months and counts the gap between the dates, so it matches how ages and contract terms are normally calculated.

Can I use this to work out how old a toddler is in months?

Yes. Pediatric growth charts are read in months from birth, so a 2-year-old is 24 months and a 3-year-old is 36 months. Enter the birth date and today's date to get the exact figure. For anything medical, follow what your pediatrician records.

Does the time of day or my time zone change the answer?

No. The calculation uses calendar dates only, with no clock time, so a date typed in New York gives the same answer as one typed in Los Angeles. Time zones only matter if you are measuring hours or seconds.
