Time Span Calculator
A time span is the full gap between two date and time stamps, reported once in every unit that gap can be written in. The span from 15 January 2024 08:30 to 21 March 2025 17:45 is 431.39 days, which is also 1 year 2 months 6 days, 61.63 weeks, 10,353.25 hours or 37,271,700 seconds.
Enter a start date and time and an end date and time. The tool reports one gap in every unit: the calendar breakdown, elapsed days, weeks, hours, minutes, seconds, weekdays, business days and the share of a year. Both endpoint dates count toward the weekday and business day totals.
Month steps clamp to the last day of a shorter month, and any span crossing 29 February gains a day. Holidays are the 11 US federal holidays with weekend dates observed on the adjacent weekday.

Enter a start stamp and an end stamp and get one gap in every unit: calendar years, months and days, total days, weeks, hours, minutes, seconds, plus weekdays, business days and the share of a year.
Key takeaways
- One gap, every unit: calendar years, months and days, total days, weeks, hours, minutes and seconds.
- Month steps clamp to the end of a shorter month, so 31 January plus one month is 29 February in 2024.
- Any span crossing 29 February gains a day, which is why the same dates a year apart can read 365 or 366 days.
- Business days here are weekdays minus the 11 US federal holidays, 297 of the 432 dates in the worked example.

What a time span covers that a plain day count misses
A span between two dates is easy to misread because the two stamps carry different amounts of information. A date-only answer says 15 January to 21 March is some number of days, but it cannot tell you whether a shift that starts at 08:30 and ends at 17:45 on the last day counts toward pay, or whether a contract that begins at noon expires before breakfast on the final date. A time span calculator keeps the clock in the problem: it takes a start date with a start time, an end date with an end time, and reports one single gap in every unit the gap can honestly be written in.
That single gap is the point. The same 431.39 days is 1 year 2 months 6 days on the calendar, 61.63 weeks on a project chart, 10,353.25 hours on a timesheet, 621,195 minutes on a stopwatch and 37,271,700 seconds if you are counting heartbeats. None of those is a rounding of the others. They are different denominations of one amount, the way a bank balance is the same money written as dollars, cents or thousands.
The calendar breakdown, and the clamping rule for short months
Counting a span in years, months and days needs one decision the elapsed totals do not: what a month step means when the target month is shorter. This calculator uses the clamping convention that calendars use, which the U.S. Naval Observatory describes for the Gregorian calendar in its leap year FAQ: a step from the 31st lands on the last day of whatever month follows, and a step from 29 February in a leap year lands on 28 February the next year. The day of the month never overflows into the next month.
| Start stamp | End stamp | Calendar breakdown | Elapsed days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 31 Jan 2024 09:00 | 29 Feb 2024 09:00 | 1 month 0 days | 29 |
| 31 Jan 2024 09:00 | 31 Mar 2024 09:00 | 2 months 2 days | 60 |
| 31 Jan 2023 09:00 | 28 Feb 2023 09:00 | 1 month 0 days | 28 |
| 29 Feb 2024 09:00 | 28 Feb 2025 09:00 | 1 year 0 days | 365 |
| 29 Feb 2024 09:00 | 1 Mar 2025 09:00 | 1 year 1 day | 366 |
The second row is the one people argue about. From 31 January 2024, one month clamps to 29 February, the next month step lands on 29 March, and the remaining 2 days bring you to 31 March. The elapsed count for the same stretch is 60 days. Both rows are correct; they answer different questions, which is why the tool shows them side by side instead of averaging them away.
Leap years: why the same dates a year apart can differ by a day
Every span that crosses 29 February picks up an extra day, and the rule behind that day is strict. Per the U.S. Naval Observatory, Gregorian years divisible by 4 are leap years except centurial years not divisible by 400, so 1700, 1800, 1900 and 2100 are common years while 1600, 2000 and 2400 are leap years. That is why the average Gregorian year is 365.2425 days, a figure the same observatory derives from fitting 97 leap days into every 400 years.
| Span | Crosses 29 February? | Elapsed days |
|---|---|---|
| 15 Mar 2023 to 15 Mar 2024 | Yes, 2024 is a leap year | 366 |
| 15 Mar 2023 to 14 Mar 2024 | Yes, and the leap day is inside | 365 |
| 1 Jan 2024 to 1 Jan 2025 | Yes | 366 |
| 1 Jan 2025 to 1 Jan 2026 | No | 365 |
The second row is the trap. Ending one day earlier, on 14 March 2024, drops the total from 366 days to 365, because 29 February 2024 still sits inside the shorter span. A lease, a warranty or a visa window that straddles a leap day can gain or lose a day depending on which stamp the contract names, so it is worth checking both endpoints before you promise a date.
Every unit at once: days, weeks, hours, minutes and seconds
The elapsed totals are pure arithmetic on the difference between the two stamps, so they behave like money: converting between them never loses information, it only changes the denomination. One day is 24 hours, one week is 7 days, and the second itself is a fixed quantity, defined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology as 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation of the cesium-133 atom, which is what makes the chain of conversions exact rather than approximate.
| Unit | The 431.39 day span reads | How it converts |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar breakdown | 1 year 2 months 6 days 9 h 15 min | anchored at the start stamp |
| Total days | 431.39 | 431 days 9 h 15 min |
| Total weeks | 61.63 | 61 weeks 4 days 9 h 15 min |
| Total hours | 10,353.25 | 431.39 x 24 |
| Total minutes | 621,195 | hours x 60 |
| Total seconds | 37,271,700 | minutes x 60 |
| Full calendar months | 14 | counted month by month, clamped |
The chain is worth checking by hand once. Dividing 37,271,700 seconds by 86,400 gives 431.39 days, and 621,195 / 60 = 10,353.25 hours, which is the same figure the day count produces when you multiply back. If a spreadsheet disagrees with either of those two lines, the spreadsheet is using a different pair of stamps or a different rounding point.
Notice that the calendar row and the day row disagree on purpose. Fourteen full calendar months plus 6 days and change is not 14 x 30 plus 6, because the months in between are 28, 29, 30 and 31 days long. When a report asks for months, quote the clamped calendar figure; when a system asks for hours, quote the elapsed figure, and never try to make the two match.
Weekdays and business days inside the same span
A span also contains a work calendar, and that count answers questions the day totals cannot. The convention here is simple: every calendar date the span touches counts, both the start date and the end date included, and a date is a working day when it falls Monday to Friday and is not a US federal holiday. The eleven federal holidays are set by law at 5 U.S.C. 6103, which the Office of Personnel Management lists on its federal holidays page, and when one falls on a Saturday or Sunday it is observed on the adjacent weekday, as the National Archives shows for Independence Day 2026, observed Friday 3 July on its 2026 holiday schedule.
| Count inside the example span | Days |
|---|---|
| Calendar dates touched, both endpoints included | 432 |
| Weekdays, Monday to Friday | 310 |
| Weekend days, Saturday and Sunday | 122 |
| Federal holidays falling on a weekday inside the span | 13 |
| Business days after weekends and holidays | 297 |
The example starts on 15 January 2024, which is itself the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, and it runs through thirteen holiday observances across two calendar years. If your deadline is measured in working days rather than dates, 297 is the number to plan around, and the gap between 310 and 297 is exactly the holiday calendar doing its work.
Share of a year: three denominators, three answers
Expressing a span as a percentage of a year needs a denominator, and there are at least three honest ones. A common year is 365 days, an average Gregorian year is 365.2425 days once leap days are spread out, and a fiscal year with its own start and end may be 366 days. The difference sounds small and is not, at the scale of contracts and interest.
| Span | Of a 365 day year | Of a 365.2425 day year |
|---|---|---|
| The 431.39 day example | 118.19 percent | 118.11 percent |
| 90 days | 24.66 percent | 24.64 percent |
| 30 days | 8.22 percent | 8.21 percent |
| 365 days | 100 percent | 99.93 percent |
The last row is the one that settles arguments: a 365 day span is all of a common year and slightly less than all of an average year, because the average year carries a quarter of a leap day that this particular span did not include. Pick the denominator your counterparty uses, state it next to the percentage, and the number will survive review.
Clock time, elapsed time and daylight saving
The two stamps you type are clock readings, and clock readings are not always 24 hours apart from one day to the next. In United States locations that observe daylight saving time, one Sunday in March has only 23 hours on the wall clock and one Sunday in November has 25. This calculator subtracts the two clock readings as written, which is what a calendar, a contract or a timesheet means by the gap. If you need physical elapsed time instead, for example for machinery runtime or laboratory logging, convert both stamps to a single time scale first: the NIST UTC(NIST) time scale page explains how civil time is kept on a uniform atomic second, and the same idea applies to any zone offset you apply by hand.
A practical check: a span from 01:00 to 04:00 on the spring change date is 3 hours on the clock but 2 hours of real time, and the mirror case in November is 3 clock hours and 4 real ones. When the stakes are pay or SLA credits, decide which reading the agreement intends, because the words on the page usually mean the clock reading.
Which number to quote, and how to check it
The fastest way to use the output well is to match the unit to the audience. Lawyers and lease readers care about the calendar breakdown, because clauses say things like within one year. Project planners quote weeks. Payroll and logistics systems store hours or decimal days. Scientists and engineers quote seconds, the SI base unit. One habit catches most errors: recompute the large unit from the small one before you circulate the number. Ten thousand hours divided by 24 is 416 days and two thirds, so if your span also claims 431 days, one of the two numbers came from a different pair of stamps.
- Quote the calendar breakdown when the underlying document speaks in years and months.
- Quote total days when the question is how long, with no calendar involved.
- Quote business days when the deadline is a working day count.
- State the convention you used, clamping included, so the reader can reproduce the figure.
Frequently asked questions
How does the time span calculator handle a month that has no 31st?
It clamps. A step from 31 January lands on the last day of the next month, so in 2024 it becomes 29 February and in 2023 it becomes 28 February. The clamp is what calendars themselves do, and it keeps the breakdown from spilling into the following month.
What does 431.39 days break into on the calendar?
From 15 January 2024 08:30 to 21 March 2025 17:45 the breakdown is 1 year, 2 months, 6 days, 9 hours and 15 minutes. The same span is 14 full calendar months plus that remainder, and 431.39 elapsed days if you ignore the calendar entirely.
How many seconds are in the example span?
37,271,700 seconds. That is 621,195 minutes, 10,353.25 hours, 431.39 days and 61.63 weeks, all the same amount written in smaller denominations.
Why do two dates one year apart sometimes differ by 366 days?
Because the span crossed 29 February. Any span that contains a leap day gains a day: 15 March 2023 to 15 March 2024 is 366 days, while 15 March 2023 to 14 March 2024 is 365 days even though both cross the leap date.
Which years are leap years under the rule the calculator uses?
Gregorian years divisible by 4, except centurial years not divisible by 400, per the U.S. Naval Observatory. So 2024 and 2028 are leap years, 2100 is not, and 2000 and 2400 are.
How are business days counted inside a span?
Every calendar date the span touches counts, both endpoints included. A date is a business day when it falls Monday to Friday and is not one of the 11 US federal holidays, with weekend holidays moved to the adjacent weekday the way federal offices observe them.
How many business days are in the 431 day example?
297. The span touches 432 calendar dates, of which 310 are weekdays and 122 are weekend days, and 13 federal holidays fall on weekdays inside the span, leaving 310 minus 13 business days.
What percent of a year is a 90 day span?
24.66 percent of a 365 day common year, or 24.64 percent of the 365.2425 day average Gregorian year. The small gap comes from the leap day the average year carries and your span does not.
Does the calculator count the start and end dates themselves?
For the business day and weekday counts, yes, both endpoints are included, which is why the example touches 432 dates over 431.39 elapsed days. For elapsed totals the stamps are subtracted directly, so no date is added or dropped.
What happens to spans that cross daylight saving changes?
The calculator subtracts clock readings as written, so a span covering the March change reads one hour shorter on the calendar than in real time and the November change reads one hour longer. For physical runtime, convert both stamps to a uniform scale such as UTC first.
Is a span of 365 days the same as a year?
It is a common year but not an average Gregorian year, which is 365.2425 days. As a percentage, 365 days is 100 percent of a common year and 99.93 percent of the average year.
Can the two stamps be in different years or even decades?
Yes. The arithmetic works on any pair of valid dates in the Gregorian calendar, and the loop that counts full calendar months is bounded so even a span of many decades returns the breakdown in one pass.
Why does the tool show both 2 months 2 days and 60 days for the same stretch?
Because from 31 January 2024 to 31 March 2024 the clamped calendar count and the elapsed day count answer different questions. Calendar clauses mean the first, billing by the day means the second, and the two cannot be made equal because February 2024 had 29 days.
How exact are the week and hour figures?
They are exact conversions of the clock difference, not estimates. 431.39 days is 61.63 weeks and 10,353.25 hours to two decimals, and the seconds figure, 37,271,700, is exact for that pair of stamps.
