Time to Minutes Calculator

2 hours 15 minutes 30 seconds is 135.5 minutes, or 8,130 seconds. Multiply the hours by 60, add the minutes, then divide the seconds by 60 and add that: 120 + 15 + 0.5. The same duration is 2.2583 decimal hours, and the calculator converts back from minutes to a clock reading.

Enter hours, minutes and seconds, a clock time like 1:45:30, or a number of minutes, and see the same duration in total minutes, decimal hours and hh:mm:ss.

What converting a time to minutes gives you

Most schedules and invoices count in minutes, while clocks speak in hours, minutes and seconds. Converting a time to minutes puts the whole duration on one scale, so 2 hours 15 minutes 30 seconds becomes 135.5 minutes and can be added to the next entry without carrying anything between columns.

The arithmetic rests on one fact: an hour holds 60 minutes and a minute holds 60 seconds. The BIPM SI brochure defines the second as the base unit of time, the minute as exactly 60 seconds and the hour as exactly 3,600 seconds, which is why the multipliers never change. Time zones and daylight saving play no part here, because a duration has no clock face attached to it. Two hours on a plane is two hours whether you take off in Chicago or in Denver.

One entry usually produces three useful numbers. Total minutes is what you add, average or bill. Decimal hours is the same duration divided by 60 again, and payroll software asks for that version. The hh:mm:ss reading is the sanity check, because a slipped digit shows up there before it reaches a total.

The formula, step by step

Total minutes = hours x 60 + minutes + seconds / 60. Hours and minutes are whole numbers on a clock, so the only division is the seconds term, and it always lands between 0 and 1.

Take 2 hours 15 minutes 30 seconds. The hours give 2 x 60 = 120 minutes. Add the 15 minutes printed on the clock and you have 135. Then the 30 seconds, which is 30 / 60 = 0.5 minutes. The total is 135.5 minutes.

Seconds are where hand conversions go wrong, because anything under a minute turns into a decimal that looks like a fraction of a minute and not a count of seconds. Twelve seconds is 0.2 minutes, 30 seconds is 0.5, 45 seconds is 0.75. A stopwatch reading of 8:07:45 is therefore 487.75 minutes, not 487.45.

Worked example: a 1:23:45 recording

A podcast episode displays 1:23:45 in the player. Hours to minutes: 1 x 60 = 60. Add 23: 83 minutes. Seconds: 45 / 60 = 0.75. The episode runs 83.75 minutes, which is 5,025 seconds and 1.3958 decimal hours.

Now suppose you are planning a two hour drive and want to fill it with episodes of that length. Two episodes run 167.5 minutes, or 2.7917 hours, which leaves 12.5 minutes to spare on a three hour drive. Three episodes would run 251.25 minutes and overshoot that drive by 71.25 minutes. The same arithmetic answers both questions, and it works in either direction, so a target length can be turned into a clock reading before you start editing.

Editors use the total minutes figure because cuts are usually described in minutes and seconds of run time. A 90 second cut from an 83.75 minute episode leaves 82.25 minutes. Removing 12 seconds from each of 40 chapters removes 480 seconds, which is 8 minutes exactly.

Going the other way: minutes into hours and seconds

The reverse trip divides instead of multiplies. Take 5,000 minutes. Divide by 60 to get 83.3333 hours. The whole hours are 83, and the leftover 0.3333 hour is 0.3333 x 60 = 20 minutes, so the duration is 83:20:00, or 3 days 11 hours 20 minutes. The calculator above reports both readings when you switch it to total minutes.

A fractional minute needs one more step. Take 135.5 minutes. Divide by 60: 2.2583 hours, so 2 whole hours and a remainder of 0.2583 x 60 = 15.5 minutes. That 0.5 minute is 30 seconds, which gives 02:15:30, the reading we started from. The half minute never disappears, it just changes clothes.

This direction matters when a system hands you minutes and a person needs a clock. A parking app that charges for 137 minutes is charging for 2:17. A payroll export that lists 4,530 minutes is listing 75.5 hours, or 1.2583 decimal hours per day across 60 days.

Common durations in minutes

The table below covers the entries that come up most often in timesheets, video work and cooking. Every row is the same formula, and the decimal hour column is the minute figure divided by 60.

TimeTotal minutesDecimal hoursSeconds
30 seconds0.50.008330
45 seconds0.750.012545
1 minute10.016760
1 hour6013,600

2:15:30135.52.25838,130
8:00:00480828,800
24:00:001,4402486,400
1 week10,080168604,800

The day and week rows are worth remembering. A 1,440 minute day is the ceiling for any single date, and a 10,080 minute week is the figure behind every 168 hour claim about how many hours a week holds. If a total comes out above those numbers for one day or one week, the entry is a duration rather than a clock time.

Where the number gets used

Payroll is the largest user. A shift of 7 hours 45 minutes is 465 minutes, which is 7.75 decimal hours, and a week of five such shifts is 2,325 minutes or 38.75 hours. Multiply by an hourly rate and the pay follows directly. The NIST time and frequency division keeps the official US time scale that payroll clocks are steered to, though the conversion itself needs none of that precision.

The weekly total falls straight out of the per shift figure, because every row carries the same 465 minutes:

ShiftClock entryTotal minutesDecimal hours
Monday7:45:004657.75
Tuesday7:45:004657.75
Wednesday7:45:004657.75
Thursday7:45:004657.75
Friday7:45:004657.75
Week total5 shifts of 7:45:002,32538.75

Adding the five rows gives 465 x 5 = 2,325 minutes, which is 38.75 decimal hours, and that is the figure a timesheet totals for the week. A 15 minute break on each of those days is another 75 minutes that the same sheet records separately, so the time on site for the week is 2,325 + 75 = 2,400 minutes, or 40 hours, while the paid figure stays at 2,325 minutes.

Media work runs on the same number. A creator paid per minute of finished video needs 83.75 for a 1:23:45 cut. Audiobook narrators quote per finished hour, so 5,025 seconds becomes 1.3958 hours of billable audio. Music libraries and stock footage sites list clips in minutes and seconds, and a 30 clip playlist of 2:15:30 tracks adds up to 4,065 minutes, or 67.75 hours.

Everyday planning uses it too. Exercise guidelines commonly cite 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, which is 2.5 hours, so five 30 minute walks covers it. Cooking instructions that give 1 hour 40 minutes at 350 F translate to 100 minutes when you are setting a timer in minutes. Phone plans and some consulting contracts bill in whole minutes, and there the rounding rule matters more than the arithmetic: a 61 second call usually bills as 2 minutes, nearly double the time the call took.

Mistakes that throw the answer off

Frequently asked questions

How many minutes are in 2 hours 15 minutes 30 seconds?

135.5 minutes. Two hours is 120 minutes, plus 15 is 135, and 30 seconds is 0.5 minutes. The same duration is 8,130 seconds and 2.2583 decimal hours.

How do you convert hh:mm:ss to minutes?

Multiply the hours by 60, add the minutes, then divide the seconds by 60 and add that. For 1:23:45 that is 60 + 23 + 0.75, which gives 83.75 minutes.

How many minutes is 1 hour 45 minutes?

105 minutes. One hour is 60, so 60 + 45 = 105, and in decimal hours the same shift is 1.75.

Is 1.5 hours the same as 1 hour 50 minutes?

No. 1.5 hours is 1 hour 30 minutes, because 0.5 x 60 = 30. The 1 hour 50 minutes reading is 1.8333 hours.

How many minutes are in a day and in a week?

A day is 1,440 minutes and a week is 10,080 minutes. A 24 hour clock tops out at 1,440, so any daily total above that is a duration spread over more than one day.

How many minutes is 5,000 minutes in hours?

83 hours and 20 minutes, which is 83.3333 decimal hours or 3 days 11 hours 20 minutes. Divide 5,000 by 60 to get 83.3333, then take 0.3333 x 60 for the 20 minutes.

Why is 45 seconds 0.75 minutes?

Because 45 / 60 = 0.75. The seconds term is always the seconds divided by 60, so 12 seconds is 0.2, 30 seconds is 0.5 and 45 seconds is 0.75.

How do I add up several times in minutes?

Convert each entry to minutes first, then add. Three entries of 1:30:00, 0:45:00 and 2:15:30 become 90, 45 and 135.5, which total 270.5 minutes or 4 hours 30 minutes 30 seconds.

Does the calculator handle times over 24 hours?

Yes. Enter 30 hours and it returns 1,800 minutes and a 30:00:00 reading, with the days row showing 1 day 06:00:00. A duration is not tied to a clock face, so hours keep counting past 24.

How many minutes is a 1:23:45 podcast?

83.75 minutes, which is 5,025 seconds or 1.3958 hours. Two episodes of that length run 167.5 minutes, or 2.7917 hours.

Should I round the minutes or the hours?

Round once, at the end, and round the unit your system pays in. Twenty shifts of 1:00:40 each come to 1,213.33 minutes exactly, but rounding every shift to 61 minutes first gives 1,220 minutes, 6.67 minutes more.

How many minutes is 30 seconds?

0.5 minutes, or 0.0083 decimal hours. Thirty seconds is half of one minute, so it is the easiest fraction to check by eye.

What is 90 minutes in hours and minutes?

1 hour 30 minutes, which is 1.5 decimal hours and 5,400 seconds. The calculator shows all three readings from a single entry.
