Week Number 2026
2026 has 53 ISO weeks, since January 1 falls on a Thursday and week 1 is the week holding the first Thursday. ISO weeks always start Monday, so week 1 of 2026 runs Dec 29, 2025 to Jan 4, 2026. US Sunday-start calendars count the week holding January 1 as week 1, a full week apart at the edges.

Key takeaways
- ISO week 1 of 2026 runs Dec 29, 2025 to Jan 4, 2026, the week holding the first Thursday
- Week 53 runs Dec 28, 2026 to Jan 3, 2027, which is why 2026 gets a 53rd week
- March 15, 2026 falls in week 11, and week 13 ends the first quarter on March 29
- US Sunday-start calendars can sit a full week apart from ISO around New Year
- Write the date range beside every week number: week 42, Oct 12 to 18, 2026 cannot be misread

What the ISO week number means
A week number is a count of which week of the year a date falls in, and there is more than one way to count. The international standard, ISO 8601, has three rules that decide everything:
- Weeks start on Monday and end on Sunday.
- Week 1 is the week containing the first Thursday of the year, which is the same as saying the week containing January 4.
- A year has 52 or 53 weeks, and the first and last weeks can spill into the neighbouring calendar years.
Those rules are why ISO week numbers sometimes look odd at the edges of the year. December 29, 30 and 31, 2025 all belong to week 1 of 2026, and December 28 to 31, 2026 belong to week 53 of 2026 even though the week finishes on January 3, 2027. The ISO standard is maintained by the International Organization for Standardization, and the underlying timekeeping is coordinated through national laboratories such as NIST's Time and Frequency Division.
The advantage of the ISO system is that every week is exactly seven days and every week has the same weekday composition, week 1 always contains a Thursday, so it always contains at least four days of the new year. That makes it reliable for scheduling across years, which is exactly what businesses need.
Worked example: March 15, 2026 is week 11
Take a plain date. Sunday, March 15, 2026, and walk through the arithmetic.
- January 1, 2026 is a Thursday, so week 1 runs Monday, December 29, 2025 to Sunday, January 4, 2026.
- Week 2 starts Monday, January 5. Each week adds 7 days.
- Week 11 starts 10 weeks later: January 5 + 70 days = Monday, March 9, 2026.
- Week 11 therefore runs March 9 to March 15, 2026.
- March 15 is day 74 of the year (31 in January + 28 in February + 15).
Check it the other way: day 74 falls in the block of days 71 to 77, and 74 / 7 = 10.57, so it is in the 11th seven-day block of the year. Both methods agree.
The number also tells you something practical. Week 11 means 10 full weeks of 2026 have passed, and 291 days remain. If you are tracking a quarterly goal, week 11 is near the end of Q1, the last complete week of the first quarter is week 13, ending Sunday, March 29, 2026.
Worked example: December 31, 2026 is week 53
The end of 2026 is the interesting part, because 2026 is one of the years with 53 ISO weeks.
- A year has 53 ISO weeks when January 1 is a Thursday, or when it is a leap year and January 1 is a Wednesday.
- January 1, 2026 is a Thursday, so 2026 gets a 53rd week.
- Week 53 runs Monday, December 28, 2026 to Sunday, January 3, 2027.
- December 31, 2026 is a Thursday, in week 53, and is day 365 of the year.
So the final week of the ISO year is not the final week of the calendar year. December 28 to 31 belong to week 53 of 2026, and January 1 to 3, 2027 also belong to week 53 of 2026. ISO week 53 of 2026 and ISO week 1 of 2027 are different weeks, but the dates overlap the calendar boundary.
This is where mistakes happen in real life. A payroll system set to "week 53" will pay a 53rd weekly period in 2026, which some employers treat as an extra pay week and others as an ordinary one. A project plan that says "deliver by week 52" means Sunday, December 27, 2026, not December 31. When someone quotes a week number, the calendar date is the only unambiguous thing.
Key week dates in 2026
All dates below are ISO weeks, which start on Monday and end on Sunday.
| ISO week | Starts (Monday) | Ends (Sunday) | What is in it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Dec 29, 2025 | Jan 4, 2026 | New Year's Day, Jan 1 (Thursday) |
| Week 2 | Jan 5, 2026 | Jan 11, 2026 | First full week of the year |
| Week 11 | Mar 9, 2026 | Mar 15, 2026 | End of Q1 approaches |
| Week 13 | Mar 23, 2026 | Mar 29, 2026 | Last full week of Q1 |
| Week 27 | Jun 29, 2026 | Jul 5, 2026 | July 4 (Saturday) |
| Week 37 | Sep 7, 2026 | Sep 13, 2026 | Labor Day, Sep 7 (Monday) |
| Week 48 | Nov 23, 2026 | Nov 29, 2026 | Thanksgiving, Nov 26 (Thursday) |
| Week 52 | Dec 21, 2026 | Dec 27, 2026 | Christmas, Dec 25 (Friday) |
| Week 53 | Dec 28, 2026 | Jan 3, 2027 | New Year's Eve, Dec 31 (Thursday) |
Notice how the fixed-date holidays move through the week numbers year to year. July 4, 2026 is a Saturday, so it sits in week 27; in a year where July 4 falls on a Monday it would be the first day of week 27 as well, but a Wednesday July 4 would land mid-week. Week numbers are stable, dates are not, which is precisely why logistics and manufacturing schedule by week.
ISO weeks vs US calendar weeks
If you are in the United States, the week number you see on a wall calendar or in a spreadsheet may not be the ISO week. There are three common conventions:
- ISO 8601, weeks start Monday, week 1 contains January 4 (or the first Thursday). Used internationally, in Europe, and in most engineering and logistics contexts.
- US Sunday-start, weeks start Sunday, and week 1 is the week containing January 1, which can be a partial week. This is what most US calendars use.
- Simple day-of-year counting, some systems number weeks as day-of-year divided by 7, rounded up. Week 1 then contains only January 1, and the last week can be one day long.
The differences are small but real. January 1, 2026 is a Thursday. Under ISO it is week 1 of 2026. Under a Sunday-start convention, the week containing January 1 starts Sunday, December 28, 2025 and would typically be called week 1 of 2026 too, but then December 28, 2026 would be week 53, while ISO calls that same Monday the start of week 53 as well. The systems converge more often than they diverge, but around New Year they can differ by a full week.
The practical rule: when a week number matters, write the date range alongside it. "Week 42, October 12 to 18, 2026" cannot be misread. "Week 42" on its own can.
Why week numbers matter at work
Week numbers look like a formality until you work somewhere that runs on them.
- Manufacturing and logistics. Production plans, shipping schedules and supplier forecasts are almost always expressed in ISO weeks, because a week is a stable unit that does not shift when month lengths change.
- Payroll. Weekly pay periods are counted in weeks, and a 53-week year means 53 paydays instead of 52, a real budgeting event for both employers and employees.
- Project and sprint planning. Many teams plan in two-week sprints, so week numbers are the natural backbone. Week 42 of 2026 spans October 12 to 18.
- ISO audits and quality systems. Documentation is dated by week, and ISO 8601 is the reference standard auditors expect.
- Academic calendars. Universities number teaching weeks from the start of term, and "week 5" means a specific date range in a specific term.
- Retail. The US retail calendar (the 4-5-4 calendar) is its own system entirely, which is why a retailer's "week 1" rarely matches anyone else's.
If you are scheduling something important, convert the week number to dates before you send it. The calculator above does exactly that: it takes any 2026 date and returns the ISO week, the bounding Monday and Sunday, the day of the year and the weeks remaining. If you need working days rather than weeks, the business days calculator on this site handles weekends and holidays.
Frequently asked questions
How many weeks are in 2026?
2026 has 53 ISO weeks. A year gets a 53rd week when January 1 falls on a Thursday, or when it is a leap year and January 1 falls on a Wednesday. January 1, 2026 is a Thursday, so week 53 runs from December 28, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
What week number is it right now?
The calculator above defaults to today's date and shows the current ISO week number automatically. On October 16, 2026 the ISO week number is 42.
What week is March 15, 2026?
March 15, 2026 is a Sunday in ISO week 11. Week 11 runs from Monday, March 9 to Sunday, March 15, 2026.
What week is December 31, 2026?
December 31, 2026 is a Thursday in ISO week 53. Week 53 runs from Monday, December 28, 2026 through Sunday, January 3, 2027, so the last days of 2026 belong to a week that ends in 2027.
When does week 1 of 2026 start?
Monday, December 29, 2025. Week 1 is always the week containing the first Thursday of the year, which for 2026 is January 1, a Thursday. That is why the 2026 calendar year begins in the middle of ISO week 1.
What week is July 4, 2026 in?
Week 27. July 4, 2026 is a Saturday, and week 27 runs from Monday, June 29 to Sunday, July 5, 2026.
What week is Thanksgiving 2026 in?
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, which is in ISO week 48. Week 48 runs from Monday, November 23 to Sunday, November 29.
What week is Christmas 2026 in?
Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2026, is in ISO week 52. Week 52 runs from Monday, December 21 to Sunday, December 27, 2026.
Why does the US week number differ from the ISO week number?
The ISO standard starts weeks on Monday and ties week 1 to the first Thursday of the year. US calendars typically start weeks on Sunday and count from January 1, so the two systems can disagree by one, especially in early January and late December.
Is 2026 a leap year?
No. 2026 has 365 days and 53 ISO weeks. February 2026 has 28 days, and December 31 is day 365 of the year.
What is the week number used for at work?
Scheduling, payroll periods, manufacturing and logistics planning, ISO audits, project reporting and academic timetables. Manufacturing and international teams usually mean the ISO week; a US retail calendar may mean something else entirely.
How do I convert a week number back to a date?
Multiply the week number minus one by 7 and add it to the Monday of week 1. For week 1 of 2026 that Monday is December 29, 2025, so week 11 starts on December 29 plus 70 days, which is March 9, 2026.
