What Day Is It?
October 16, 2026 is a Friday, the 289th day of 365, in ISO week 42 and quarter 4, with 76 days left in the year. Day of year counts January 1 as day 1, and a leap year shifts every date after February by one. The year 2026 has 53 ISO weeks.

The day of the week is harder than it looks
Most people can work out what day of the week it is right now. Almost nobody can do it reliably for a date three years out, and there is a reason: the calendar is a stack of irregular cycles. Months are 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, which means each month starts two or three weekdays after the last. A leap day shifts everything after February by one extra day, and century rules skip leap years three times every four centuries.
The result is that a date's weekday moves in a pattern that repeats every 28 years in most cases, the solar cycle, but breaks at century boundaries. Doing it in your head is possible with a set of memorized codes, and it is a party trick, not a plan.
The calculator above handles three related questions at once, because they always come up together:
- What day of the week is this date? Useful for deadlines, appointments and scheduling.
- What day of the year is it, the 289th day, for instance? Useful for tracking, payroll periods and progress against a yearly plan.
- Which week number is it? Useful for anyone reporting weekly, from project managers to teachers.
Day of the year: counting from January 1
The day of the year is how many days have passed since January 1, counting January 1 itself as day 1. It is also called the ordinal date, and in computing it is often written as YYYY-DDD, so October 16, 2026 becomes 2026-289.
You can work it out by adding up the month lengths and then adding the day:
- January to September 2026: 31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 31 + 30 = 273
- Plus the 16 days of October: 273 + 16 = 289
So October 16, 2026 is day 289 of 365, with 76 days left in the year. In a leap year, everything after February 28 shifts by one, which is why the same calendar date is one day further along the count.
Some milestones worth knowing for a normal 365-day year: day 100 is April 10, day 185 is July 4, almost exactly the midpoint, day 273 is September 30, and day 330 is November 26, which is Thanksgiving in 2026. In a leap year every one of those dates moves one day earlier in the count, or stays the same and the year has one extra day at the end.
Week numbers: ISO 8601 versus US calendars
Week numbers are where people argue, because there are two conventions in common use and they disagree.
ISO 8601 is the international standard. Weeks start on Monday. Week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of the year, which means week 1 can begin in December of the previous year. Under ISO, a year has 52 weeks most years and 53 in others.
US calendars usually start the week on Sunday and number from January 1, so week 1 is whatever partial week contains New Year's Day. That can produce a different number for the same date.
| Date | Weekday | Day of year | ISO week | Quarter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January 1, 2026 | Thursday | 1 of 365 | 1 | Q1 |
| April 10, 2026 | Friday | 100 of 365 | 15 | Q2 |
| July 4, 2026 | Saturday | 185 of 365 | 27 | Q3 |
| October 16, 2026 | Friday | 289 of 365 | 42 | Q4 |
| November 26, 2026 | Thursday | 330 of 365 | 48 | Q4 |
| December 31, 2026 | Thursday | 365 of 365 | 53 | Q4 |
Two quirks are visible in that table. 2026 has 53 ISO weeks, which happens when the year starts on a Thursday or is a leap year starting on a Wednesday. And December 31, 2025 sits in ISO week 1 of 2026, not in a week of 2025, because its week contains the first Thursday of 2026.
Worked example: planning backwards from a deadline
Suppose a filing is due 30 business days from Thursday, October 1, 2026. What matters is the weekday of the date you land on.
- 30 business days is 6 working weeks, so the date is 42 calendar days later.
- October 1 + 42 days = November 12, 2026.
- November 12, 2026 is a Thursday, which is a working day.
Now try the same from Friday, December 18, 2026, with the Christmas and New Year holidays in the way:
- 30 business days is 42 calendar days ignoring holidays, landing on January 29, 2027.
- January 29, 2027 is a Friday.
- But two federal holidays fall inside the window, so the real answer slips by two business days to February 2, 2027, a Tuesday.
That is the whole point of asking the weekday: the number of days is easy, and knowing whether the answer lands on a Sunday is what saves you. The day-of-year count helps too, a budget period defined as "days 200 to 250" is a lot easier to schedule when you know day 200 of 2026 is July 19.
Weekdays, quarters and the shape of the year
Two more ways of describing a date are worth knowing because they show up in reporting.
Quarters. Q1 is January to March, Q2 is April to June, Q3 is July to September and Q4 is October to December. Day 289 is in Q4. Businesses and schools run on quarters, and the quarter-end dates. March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 31, are the ones that drive deadlines.
Weekday patterns. A normal year is 365 days, which is 52 weeks and one day. That means every date shifts forward by one weekday each year. October 16, 2025 was a Thursday; October 16, 2026 is a Friday; October 16, 2027 will be a Saturday. A leap year adds two instead of one, which is why the pattern seems to jump.
If you are checking something time-sensitive, note that this page works from the date you type using your device's calendar. It does not do time-zone conversion. The authoritative source for official time in the United States is the NIST Time and Frequency Division, and the official clock is published at time.gov, which is what you want if the difference between a date and a timestamp matters.
Where the day of the week quietly matters
Weekday and day-of-year counts turn up in more places than people expect:
- Deadlines and filings. Many legal and tax deadlines are defined in days but resolved by weekday, with a rule that says anything landing on a weekend or holiday rolls to the next business day.
- Payroll and billing cycles. Weekly, biweekly and semi-monthly pay periods produce different numbers of paydays per year, 26 for biweekly, 24 for semi-monthly, and the day of the week decides which.
- Schools and sports. Terms are counted in days, and "day 100" is a real milestone in elementary schools. League fixtures are scheduled by weekday.
- Medication and habit tracking. "Every third day" or "day 14 of the cycle" both depend on knowing where you are in the count.
- Interest and loan accrual. Many loan products accrue interest daily, so the number of days in a period, and whether a weekend sits inside it, changes the amount.
None of that needs a formula in your head. Type the date, read the weekday, the day of the year, the ISO week and the days remaining, and get on with your day. Everything runs in your browser, the date you enter is never sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
What day of the week is October 16, 2026?
Friday. It is day 289 of 365, ISO week 42, in the fourth quarter, with 76 days left in the year.
What day is the 100th day of the year?
In a normal year like 2026 the 100th day is April 10. In a leap year it falls one day earlier relative to the calendar. April 9, because February has 29 days.
What is the day of the year for today?
Enter today's date above and the calculator returns it directly. For reference, day 1 is January 1, day 185 is July 4 in a normal year, and the last day is 365 in a normal year or 366 in a leap year.
How do I calculate the day of the year myself?
Add the days in all the months before the date, then add the day number. For October 16: 31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 31 + 30 = 273, plus 16 = 289. Add one day after February in a leap year.
What is an ISO week number?
It is the international standard (ISO 8601) for numbering weeks. Week 1 is the week containing the first Thursday of the year, weeks always start on Monday, and a year has either 52 or 53 ISO weeks. December 31, 2026 is in ISO week 53, and January 1, 2027 also falls in week 53, of 2026.
What week number is it in the US convention?
US calendars often number weeks differently, usually starting week 1 on January 1 and running Sunday to Saturday. That is why the same date can be week 42 under ISO and week 41 or 43 on a US wall calendar. If a week number matters, say which standard you mean.
How many days are left in the year?
Subtract the day of the year from 365 (or 366 in a leap year). On October 16, 2026 that is 365 − 289 = 76 days, including October 16 itself if you count from the start of that day.
Which years are leap years?
Years divisible by 4, except centuries that are not divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2028 are leap years, 2026 and 2027 are not, and 2100 will not be one. A leap year has 366 days and February 29.
Was there ever a year with no February 29 for 8 years in a row?
Yes, around the Gregorian calendar change: 1700 was not a leap year even though it is divisible by 4, so some regions had a gap of eight years between leap days. The same thing happens in 2100.
Why do I need the day of the week for a deadline?
Because many deadlines are defined in business days rather than calendar days. A 30-day period ending on a Saturday often rolls to the following Monday, and some legal filings have to be submitted by a specific hour on a weekday. Knowing the weekday is the first step.
What is the difference between a calendar day and a business day?
A business day excludes weekends and, usually, federal holidays. A 10-business-day deadline that starts on a Monday ends on the second Friday, 14 calendar days later, assuming no holidays fall in between. Federal holidays can add a day each.
Does this tool know about time zones?
It works with the date you type, using your device's calendar. It does not convert between time zones. If you need an exact timestamp, the official US time is published by NIST and the US Naval Observatory.
