Years Between Two Dates Calculator

Count whole years first, then months, then leftover days: January 15, 2000 to March 10, 2026 is 26 years, 1 month and 23 days. That is 9,551 days in total. Dividing by 365 gives 26.15 years, which looks exact but is not, because leap days fall inside the range and the average year is 365.2425 days.

Enter any two dates and see exactly how many years, months and days separate them, plus the same gap in total days, weeks, months and hours.

How to count the years between two dates

A "years between two dates" question is almost never answered by dividing the number of days by 365. Do that with January 1, 2000 to January 1, 2026 and you get 26.00, which happens to be right. Do it with January 15, 2000 to March 10, 2026 and the same division gives 26.15, a number that reads as if it were exact but is not. The calculator above avoids that trap by counting the way a person counts: whole years first, then whole months, then the leftover days.

The method is simple to state. Take the earlier date and add one year. If the result is still on or before the later date, that year counts and you try again. When adding another year would overshoot, stop, those are your whole years. Then run the same test with months, and finally count the days that are left. For January 15, 2000 to March 10, 2026 that produces 26 years, 1 month and 23 days.

One decision is yours to make: whether the last day counts. From June 1 to June 2, is that one day or two? With the toggle off you get the gap between the two dates, which is 1 day. Switch it on and you get the number of calendar days in the range, counting the first day and the last day, which is 2. Ages, tenures and "how long since" questions normally want the plain gap. Deadlines, notice periods and stays normally want the inclusive count.

Dates here are plain calendar dates with no clock time attached, so time zones and daylight saving can never shift the answer. If you want the formal rules behind calendar timekeeping, NIST's Time and Frequency Division publishes them, and timeanddate.com's duration calculator is a useful cross-check.

Worked example: January 15, 2000 to March 10, 2026

Enter those two dates and leave the end-date toggle off. The calculator walks forward like this:

The gap is therefore 26 years, 1 month and 23 days. The same gap expressed other ways is 9,551 days, 1,364 weeks and 3 days, 313 whole months, or roughly 26.15 decimal years. That last figure is the number the divide-by-365 shortcut would have given you, and you can see why it is misleading: 26.15 years sounds like 26 years and 55 days, when the true remainder is 1 month and 23 days.

Now switch the end-date toggle on and every count moves by exactly one day: 26 years, 1 month and 24 days, and 9,552 total days. That single day is the entire difference between "how long since" and "how many days does this range cover". Getting it wrong on a lease, a warranty or a visa window is the kind of error that costs real money, so pick the toggle deliberately rather than by default.

A second example that catches people out: February 28, 2024 to February 28, 2025. Both dates are the last day of February and 2024 is a leap year, so the whole-year count is exactly 1 with nothing left over, but the total is 366 days, not 365, because February 29, 2024 sits inside the range.

The same gap, five ways to say it

Different forms ask for different units. Here is the January 15, 2000 to March 10, 2026 gap written five ways, with a note on when each one is the right choice.

UnitValue for this gapUse it when
Years, months, days26 years, 1 month, 23 daysAnything a human reads: ages, service, resumes
Whole years26Forms that only accept whole years
Total months313Loan terms, leases, subscription lengths
Total days9,551Deadlines, interest accrual, day counts
Total hours229,224Billing by the hour, uptime and downtime reports

Notice how the rows are not interchangeable. A 313-month loan term is not the same thing as "26 years and 1 month" on a form, because the form may round. And 9,551 days is not 26 years of interest, a bank that accrues daily will use the day count, while a bank that quotes an annual rate will use the years. When in doubt, report the years, months and days and let the reader convert.

Leap years: why a year is not always 365 days

The Gregorian calendar adds an extra day every four years, but not every four years without exception. The rule is: a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, unless it is divisible by 100, unless it is also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, 1900 was not, and 2100 will not be. Over a full 400-year cycle there are 97 leap years, which gives an average year of 365.2425 days.

That average is why decimal years drift. If you convert a day count to years using 365, you lose about a quarter of a day per year, which is a full day every four years and 24 days over a century. Using 365.2425 fixes the long-run average but still gives a fractional answer for any single pair of dates. Counting whole years, months and days avoids the problem completely, because it never converts between units.

For the day count itself, leap days matter. From March 1, 2023 to March 1, 2026 there are 1,096 days, not 1,095, because February 29, 2024 falls in the middle. Two ranges that look identical on a calendar can differ by a day for this reason, which matters when a contract is written in days rather than in years.

Where people use a years-between calculator

The most common uses are less glamorous than you would expect. Job tenure: resumes, severance formulas and pension vesting all depend on completed years of service, and "completed" means the day the anniversary lands, not the year it starts. Immigration and residency: forms that ask for years and months of continuous residence want the years-months-days breakdown, not a decimal. Age: a person is 26 on their 26th birthday and stays 26 for 365 or 366 days.

Warranties and guarantees: a 3-year warranty bought on November 30, 2023 expires on November 30, 2026, which is 1,096 days later because of the leap day. Insurance and annuities: policy durations and surrender schedules are quoted in years but settled in days. Rent and leases: a 12-month lease from the 31st of a month has to land somewhere in a 30-day month, which is where the years-months-days form earns its keep.

If you are checking Social Security or retirement eligibility, the rules are written in years and months of covered employment, and the Social Security Administration's retirement planner explains how the agency counts them. For anything involving two dates rather than a duration, the duration calculator is a handy second opinion.

Getting the answer right when the dates are messy

Three situations trip people up. The first is a date on the 29th, 30th or 31st. From January 31 to February 28, is that "one month" or "28 days"? This calculator treats it as 28 days, with no whole month credited, because February 31 does not exist. Some payroll systems credit a whole month instead. If the answer is going to be argued about, quote the day count as well.

The second is the inclusive count. A 30-day notice served on April 1 expires on April 30 if you count both the first and last day, and on May 1 if you count the gap. Contracts usually say which they mean, and if they do not, the inclusive reading is the safer one for deadlines. Use the toggle to see both.

The third is time zones, which do not matter here but do matter elsewhere. Because the inputs are plain dates, a range that spans a daylight saving change is still counted as whole days. If you need hours, subtract an hour for each spring-forward inside the range and add one for each fall-back, a detail that only shows up in billing systems, not in calendars.

Finally, remember that "three years" is ambiguous in English. It can mean three calendar years, 36 months, or 1,095 days. The calculator gives you all of them at once, which is the fastest way to spot a disagreement before it becomes a problem.

Frequently asked questions

How many years are between January 1, 2000 and January 1, 2026?

Exactly 26 years. The two dates fall on the same month and day, so there is no leftover month or day. In total that is 9,497 days, because 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024 are all leap years and each adds a day.

How do you count years between two dates when the days don't match?

Count whole years first, then whole months, then leftover days. From January 15, 2000 to March 10, 2026 you get 26 years, 1 month and 23 days. Never divide the day count by 365, that gives 26.15 years, which is a different number and reads as if it were exact.

Is a year 365 or 366 days?

Three out of every four calendar years are 365 days. Leap years are 366. Over 400 years the average is 365.2425 days, which is why dividing a raw day count by 365 drifts by about a day every four years.

How many days is 3 years?

1,095 days if no leap day falls inside the range, and 1,096 days if one does. From March 1, 2023 to March 1, 2026 the answer is 1,096 days because February 29, 2024 sits in the middle. Always count the leap days rather than assuming 365.

Does the end date count as a day?

It depends on what you are measuring. For an age or a length of service you count the gap between the dates, so June 1 to June 2 is 1 day. For a deadline, a notice period or a hotel stay you count both the first and last day, so the same range is 2 days. The calculator has a toggle for this.

How many years between February 29 and the next February 28?

Exactly 1 year, 0 months and 0 days. Both dates are the last day of February, so a full calendar year has passed. The total day count is 365 or 366 depending on whether the range crosses another leap day.

How do I work out years of service for a job?

Put your hire date in the start field and today's date in the end field. Leave the end-date toggle off so you get the gap, which is how employers count service. An employee hired on June 10, 2019 reaches 7 years of service on June 10, 2026.

Why does a date gap change if I flip the start and end dates?

It doesn't, the calculator swaps them automatically so the earlier date is always the start, and it tells you it did. The number of years, months and days is the same either way, and the totals are identical.

How many years is 10,000 days?

About 27 years and 4 months. Precisely, 10,000 days is 27 years, 4 months and 17 days, because 10,000 / 365.2425 = 27.38 years. Converting days to years always involves a fractional answer, which is exactly why this calculator counts calendar years instead.

Can I count years and months between dates in a spreadsheet?

Yes. In Excel or Google Sheets the DATEDIF function does the same job: DATEDIF(start, end, "Y") gives whole years, "YM" gives leftover months and "MD" gives leftover days. This calculator applies the same logic in your browser, without the file.

Do time zones or daylight saving affect the answer?

No. Dates are entered without a time, so the calculation uses plain calendar days. A daylight saving shift moves the clock by an hour, not by a day, and never changes how many days sit between two dates.

How many years between July 4, 1776 and today?

Count whole years from July 4, 1776 to July 4 of the current year, then add the leftover months and days. On July 4, 2026 the answer is exactly 250 years; on October 16, 2026 it is 250 years, 3 months and 12 days.
