The $20 an hour math: 2,080 hours and the $41,600 year

A full-time year is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, which is 2,080 hours. Multiply that by $20 and you get $41,600 before tax. That works out to $3,467 a month, $800 a week, $1,600 every two weeks and $160 a day on an 8-hour shift.

The fast way to check it in your head is to double the hourly rate and add three zeros, which gives $40,000 and lands close to the exact figure. The reason the shortcut undershoots is that it assumes 2,000 hours, while a real full-time year is 2,080. The 80-hour difference is worth $1,600 at this rate.

The number of paid weeks is the variable to watch. Some hourly jobs pay for 50 or 51 weeks because of an unpaid shutdown, and each unpaid week costs $800 at this rate. A job advertised at $20 an hour with 50 paid weeks pays $40,000, which is the same as a $19.23 rate across 52 weeks.

The calculator applies your own hours and paid weeks, so you can compare two schedules side by side before you take an offer.

What $20 an hour pays full time, part time and at 45 hours

Gross pay across the common schedules, at 52 paid weeks a year.

Hours a weekPay a yearPay a monthPay a week
25 hours$26,000$2,167$500
30 hours$31,200$2,600$600
40 hours$41,600$3,467$800
45 hours$46,800$3,900$900
50 hours$52,000$4,333$1,000

Those figures are straight time. Add overtime and the last two rows rise: at 45 hours with the five extra hours paid at time and a half, the year pays $49,400 instead of $46,800. At 50 hours with ten overtime hours, it pays $57,200 instead of $52,000.

Part time at this rate is a different conversation. A 25-hour week pays $26,000, which is below the median full-time wage and near the median for part-time workers. It also keeps a single filer in the 10% federal bracket, which means a smaller share goes to income tax than on a full-time schedule.

Overtime at $20 an hour

Federal law requires time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek for most hourly employees. At $20 an hour that rate is $30 an hour, which is a 50% premium on every extra hour.

The effect on the annual figure is larger than people expect, because overtime hours are paid at a higher rate and do not add to the fixed weeks. Five overtime hours a week for 52 weeks is 260 hours at $30, or $7,800 on top of the $41,600 base, for a year of $49,400. Ten overtime hours a week adds $15,600 and takes the year to $57,200.

Two rules are worth knowing. Overtime is calculated per workweek, not per pay period, so a week of 45 hours and a week of 35 hours do not cancel out; the first week still owes five hours of premium pay. And the overtime rate is based on your regular rate, so a shift differential or a production bonus can raise the regular rate and the overtime rate with it. The Department of Labor overtime rules spell out the details.

What $20 an hour is after taxes

The 2026 rules for a single filer start with a $16,100 standard deduction. After that the rate is 10% on the first $12,400 of taxable income and 12% on everything up to $50,400.

On $41,600 of gross pay, taxable income is $25,500. Federal income tax is $1,240 plus 12% of $13,100, which is $1,572, for a total of $2,812. Payroll tax at 7.65% is $3,182. In a state with no income tax, take-home is $35,606, or $2,967 a month.

State tax is the swing factor. In Pennsylvania the flat 3.07% rate adds $1,277, taking take-home to $34,328. In a state with a 5% rate the state bill is $2,080 and take-home falls to $33,526. That is a spread of about $2,080 a year for the same job, and the IRS inflation adjustments for tax year 2026 are the source for the federal figures.

Note where the money sits. The whole salary is taxed in the 10% and 12% brackets, so the marginal rate is 12% and the effective federal rate is 6.8%. There is room to earn more before the next bracket starts at $50,400 of taxable income, which is $66,500 of gross pay.

Is $20 an hour a good wage?

Compare it with three benchmarks. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, so $20 is nearly three times the floor. The median full-time worker earned $1,251 a week in the second quarter of 2026, or about $31.28 an hour, so $20 sits at roughly 64 percent of the median. The median full-time salary works out near $65,052 a year, against $41,600 here.

What that means in practice depends on cost of living. In a small town or a low-cost metro, $41,600 supports a single adult comfortably and a small family with care. In a large coastal metro, the same figure covers rent and groceries with little left over, and the 30% rent rule allows only about $858 a month for housing.

Two things move the rate up quickly. One is overtime, which at this rate pays $30 an hour and can add $7,800 a year for five extra hours a week. The other is a move to a state with no income tax, worth roughly $1,277 to $2,080 a year against the states that tax wages.

A $20 an hour job is also a strong platform for the next step. Employers often hire supervisors and leads from within at this level, and the jump from $20 to $25 an hour is a $10,400 raise over a full year, which is a bigger change than most annual cost-of-living adjustments.

What this estimate leaves out

The calculator covers federal income tax and payroll tax for a single filer who takes the standard deduction, plus whatever state rate you enter. Four things can change the real answer.

Credits are not modelled. The earned income credit, the child tax credit and the dependent care credit can all reduce the federal bill, and at this income level a family may see a refund larger than the tax withheld.

Pre-tax deductions come off before tax. A 401k contribution, a health insurance premium and a commuter benefit all shrink taxable income, so the tax bill falls along with take-home. At this rate a 5% 401k contribution is $2,080 a year.

State and local tax is applied at the flat rate you enter. Progressive states tax the first dollars at a low rate and later dollars higher, and a handful of cities add an income tax on top. Your own effective rate depends on your full return.

Finally, this is pay against tax, nothing else. It does not value benefits, paid time off or the cost of a commute, and it does not judge whether the rate fits the work. Those are the parts of an offer that no calculator can settle for you.

How much is $20 an hour part time?

At 25 hours a week it is $26,000 a year, and at 30 hours it is $31,200. A 25-hour week keeps a single filer in the 10% bracket, with federal income tax of about $990 and take-home near $22,223 in Pennsylvania.

What is $20 an hour at 50 hours a week?

Straight time for all 50 hours pays $52,000 a year. If the last 10 hours are overtime at $30, the same schedule pays $57,200. Either way, a 50-hour week takes gross pay past the point where the 12% federal bracket starts to matter more.

Does $20 an hour beat $40,000 a year?

Yes, slightly. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $20 an hour pays $41,600, which is $1,600 more than a $40,000 salary. If the job has unpaid weeks off, say 50 paid weeks, the same rate pays $40,000 and the two are equal.

How much is $20 an hour after 401k and insurance?

A 5% 401k contribution is $2,080 a year, and a typical employee share of health insurance runs $1,200 to $3,000 a year for single coverage. Take both off the $34,328 take-home and you are looking at roughly $29,000 to $31,000 reaching your account.
