Money questions come up in small, ordinary moments: splitting a dinner bill, checking whether a raise beats inflation, figuring out how long a credit card balance will take to clear. These tools do the arithmetic so you can see the number before you make a decision.

What the numbers look like

Credit card interest is the one people underestimate most. A $5,000 balance at 22% APR paid at $250 a month takes 26 months to clear and costs $1,285.72 in interest, about 26% of the original balance. Paying $50 more each month cuts that to 21 months and $1,021.60 in interest, a saving of $1,776 compared with the slowest schedule in the chart.

The habit worth building is to run the percentage before reacting. A $3 increase feels the same whether it lands on an $11 service or a $60 pair of shoes, but it is 27% in one case and 5% in the other.
