Month Calculator
March 1, 2026 plus 12 months is March 1, 2027, a span of 365 days. Between January 31 and February 28, 2026 the count is 1 whole month with no days left over, because February has only 28 days and the day is clamped.
Count the whole months between two dates, or move a date forward and backward by months. Whole months follow the anniversary rule, so the 31st clamps to the last day of a shorter month instead of spilling into the next one.

Key takeaways
- Whole months count completed anniversaries of the start date, not blocks of 30 days
- March 1, 2026 to March 1, 2027 is 12 months or 365 days
- January 31 plus one month is February 28 in 2026, because February cannot hold a 31st
- A calendar month averages 30.436875 days, which is why 3 months is not 90 days
- May 31 plus 3 months is August 31, but May 31 plus 90 days is August 29

Two questions a month calculator answers
People arrive at a month calculator with one of two jobs. Either they want to know how many months sit between two dates, or they want to move a date by a number of months and see what comes out.
Both jobs live on this page, because they are two directions of the same calendar arithmetic and they share the same trap: a month has no fixed length. Add three months to May 31 and you land on August 31, which is 92 days later. Add 90 days and you land on August 29. Same start, three days apart, and both answers are defensible depending on what the contract says.
This page also converts the result into days and weeks, handles negative month counts for going backwards, and names the day of the week you land on. If all you need is the gap between two dates with no adding or subtracting, the narrower months between dates page does only that job.
How whole months get counted
The counting rule that matches leases, loans, notice periods and pediatric age is the anniversary rule: count how many times the start date's day of month has come around, then count the leftover days.
Start on March 1 and the first whole month ends on April 1, the second on May 1, and so on. That is why March 1, 2026 to March 1, 2027 is 12 months and not 11. It is also why the answer to "how many months from January 1 to December 31" is 11 months with 30 days left over, not 12: the twelfth anniversary falls on the next January 1.
One wrinkle needs a rule of its own. If the start date is the 31st and the target month has 30 days, the anniversary cannot exist, so the count uses the last day of that month instead. January 31 plus one month is February 28 in 2026, and that is treated as a full month, not as 28 days of a partial one.
| Start | End | Whole months | Extra days | Total days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| March 1, 2026 | March 1, 2027 | 12 | 0 | 365 |
| November 30, 2026 | March 1, 2027 | 3 | 1 | 91 |
| January 31, 2026 | February 28, 2026 | 1 | 0 | 28 |
| October 20, 2026 | January 15, 2027 | 2 | 26 | 87 |
| October 20, 2027 | October 20, 2028 | 12 | 0 | 366 |
The November 30 row is the one that catches people. Three months after November 30 is February 28, 2027, and March 1 is one day past that, so the answer is 3 months and 1 day, not 3 months and a negative day or 2 months and 30 days.
Worked example: a 12 month lease
A lease runs from March 1, 2026 to March 1, 2027 at $1,800 a month. The calculator returns 12 whole months, 0 leftover days and 365 total days. Twelve payments of $1,800 come to $21,600 for the year.
Now the tenant asks to leave 10 days early, on February 19, 2027, and wants a credit. Divide the annual rent by the actual days in the term: 21,600 / 365 = 59.178 dollars a day, so 10 days is $591.78. That is the method most likely to survive a small claims argument, because the term does contain 365 days.
The landlord's software may do it differently, and the difference is not rounding error. Divide the monthly rent by the days in February and multiply by 10, and the credit is 1,800 / 28 x 10 = $642.86. Divide by a flat 30 days and it is $600.00. The same 10 days is worth $591.78, $600.00 or $642.86 depending on the method in the lease.
| Proration method | Arithmetic | Credit for 10 days |
|---|---|---|
| Annual rent over 365 days | 21,600 / 365 x 10 | $591.78 |
| Monthly rent over a flat 30 days | 1,800 / 30 x 10 | $600.00 |
| Monthly rent over the real month | 1,800 / 28 x 10 | $642.86 |
None of these is the official answer. The lease picks one, and if it does not, the state's landlord rules or local practice usually decide. Read the proration clause before promising anyone a number.
Adding months and the end of month problem
Moving forward is simple until the day of month does not exist in the target month. The rule that keeps dates sensible is clamping: use the last valid day of the target month, and remember that the result stays clamped, it does not spring back.
| Start date | Months | Result | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 31, 2026 | +1 | February 28, 2026 | February has 28 days, so the 31st is clamped |
| August 31, 2026 | +6 | February 28, 2027 | Lands in February again, and 2027 is not a leap year |
| December 31, 2026 | +2 | February 28, 2027 | Year rolls over, then clamps |
| March 31, 2026 | -1 | February 28, 2026 | Going backwards clamps too |
| January 31, 2024 | +1 | February 29, 2024 | Leap year keeps the 29th |
| October 20, 2026 | +6 | April 20, 2027 | No clamping needed |
The alternative rule, which some payroll and billing systems use, is to always clamp to the 30th or to keep a separate day-of-month field. That is why a subscription bought on January 31 can bill on February 28, then March 28, then April 28 for the rest of the year. Nothing broke; the system recorded "last day of month" at the start and kept it.
If the exact day matters, such as a court deadline or a notice date, write the date out in full in the contract instead of describing it as "one month later".
Months are not 30 days: what that costs
A calendar month averages 30.436875 days, which is 365.2425 divided by 12. Multiply by a year and you get 365.2425, the mean length of the Gregorian year. That average is a useful conversion factor and a poor contract term.
| Span | Days | Note |
|---|---|---|
| May 31 to August 31, 2026, three calendar months | 92 | June, July and August, with two 31 day months |
| May 31 plus 90 days | 90 | Lands on August 29, three days earlier |
| March 1, 2026 to March 1, 2027 | 365 | No February 29 in the span |
| October 20, 2027 to October 20, 2028 | 366 | February 29, 2028 falls inside |
| One average Gregorian month | 30.436875 | 365.2425 / 12 |
Two everyday cases feel this gap. A "90 day" probation period and a "three month" probation period end on different days, and a 90 day notice served on May 31 expires on August 29 while a one month notice served the same day expires on June 30.
Weeks run into the same mismatch. A month is about 4.348 weeks, so six weeks is 1.38 months and eight weeks is 1.84 months. Payroll makes it concrete: biweekly pay produces 26 checks a year while semimonthly pay produces 24, which is why the two schedules never match month to month but do match on an annual total.
A month converted to days is 30.436875 / 7 = 4.348 weeks on average. Use that figure when you need a rough conversion, and use real dates when money or deadlines depend on the answer.
Month lengths, leap years and quarters
The knuckle trick still works and the numbers have not changed since 1582. February is the only month that moves, and it does so under the Gregorian rule the U.S. Naval Observatory publishes: every year divisible by 4 is a leap year, except century years, which are leap years only when divisible by 400. That makes 2000 a leap year, 2100 not one, and 2026 an ordinary year with 28 days in February.
| Month | Days, ordinary year | Days, leap year |
|---|---|---|
| January | 31 | 31 |
| February | 28 | 29 |
| March | 31 | 31 |
| April | 30 | 30 |
| May | 31 | 31 |
| June | 30 | 30 |
| July | 31 | 31 |
| August | 31 | 31 |
| September | 30 | 30 |
| October | 31 | 31 |
| November | 30 | 30 |
| December | 31 | 31 |
Quarters are three months, and three months are not a fixed number of days. In the 2027 calendar year, January 1 to April 1 is 90 days, April 1 to July 1 is 91, July 1 to October 1 is 92 and October 1 to January 1, 2028 is 92, which adds to 365. Financial quarters built on calendar months inherit that unevenness, so a quarter reported as 13 weeks covers a different period than one reported as three months.
The Gregorian calendar's own definition is worth one line: a mean year of 365.2425 days, kept in step with the seasons by dropping three leap days every 400 years. The introduction to calendars from the same observatory lays out the full rule and the Julian version it replaced.
Where month arithmetic shows up
The same three lines of calendar logic sit behind a surprising number of everyday questions.
Rent and leases. A 12 month term runs from the same day to the same day, and the anniversary defines when the rent can change. Counting 365 days instead can put a renewal on the wrong day in a leap year.
Notice periods. "One month's notice" and "30 days' notice" are different obligations. Served on January 31, one month ends on February 28 while 30 days ends on March 2, a two day gap that matters in eviction and employment cases.
Billing cycles. Monthly billing delivers 12 statements a year, quarterly delivers 4 and annual delivers 1. Annual plans priced at 10 months of the monthly rate are a common discount structure, and the discount is easy to check once you know the count.
Payroll. Semimonthly pay is 24 checks a year, biweekly is 26. In a month with three biweekly paydays, a budget built on two gets a windfall; a budget built on 26 checks a year and spent at the 24 check rate gets the opposite surprise.
Warranties and subscriptions. "12 months from purchase" ends on the same date next year, not after 365 days, which in a leap year is one day apart.
Age in months. Pediatric schedules use completed months, which is why the birthday rule matters: a child born on the 31st turns "one month" on the last day of the next month, and appointment windows follow that date.
Project planning. A three month phase that starts on the 31st needs an explicit end date, because the clamped result differs from adding 13 weeks.
Rounding partial months without getting it wrong
Once you have a month count and some leftover days, there are three honest ways to present it and one dishonest one.
Whole months plus days. The cleanest form: 2 months and 26 days. It is exact, it can be checked against a calendar, and it never claims precision the dates do not have.
Decimal months. Divide total days by 30.436875. October 20, 2026 to January 15, 2027 is 87 days, and 87 / 30.436875 = 2.86 months. Useful in charts and dashboards, where a single number is easier to plot than a pair.
Rounded months. Say "about 3 months" and mean it. Rounding 2 months and 26 days up to 3 is fine for a verbal estimate and wrong for a contract.
The dishonest version is to divide by 30 and call the result exact. That turns a 31 day month into 1.03 months and makes a year come out at 12.17 months, a number that appears in spreadsheets everywhere and reconciles with nothing.
If the offset goes into a data field rather than a sentence, ISO 8601 writes a duration of one month as P1M and a duration of one minute as PT1M, where the letter T is the only thing separating months from minutes.
A short checklist for contracts: name the start date, name the end date, state whether partial months are prorated by calendar days or by a flat 30 day month, and say what happens on the 29th, 30th and 31st. Four sentences remove every ambiguity this page has described.
Frequently asked questions
How many months is March 1, 2026 to March 1, 2027?
Exactly 12 months, and 365 days. The anniversary rule counts twelve completed returns of the first of the month, with no leftover days.
Why is January 31 to February 28 one month and not 28 days?
Because the anniversary of January 31 falls on the last day of February when February is too short. February 28, 2026 counts as one full month, and the next anniversary is March 31.
How do I add 3 months to a date?
Add 3 to the month number, roll the year if it passes December, then keep the day unless the target month is shorter. May 31 plus 3 months is August 31; November 30 plus 3 months is February 28.
Is 3 months the same as 90 days?
No. Three calendar months run 89 to 92 days depending on where they start. May 31 to August 31, 2026 is 92 days, while 90 days after May 31 is August 29.
How many weeks are in a month?
About 4.348 on average, since 30.436875 / 7 = 4.348. Six weeks is roughly 1.38 months and eight weeks about 1.84 months.
What is an average month in days?
30.436875 days, which is 365.2425 divided by 12. The figure comes from the Gregorian year, not from any single month.
How many months between October 20, 2026 and January 15, 2027?
2 months and 26 days, or 87 days in total. The decimal version is 2.86 months using the 30.436875 average.
Does the calculator handle dates in the past?
Yes. Enter any two dates in either order and the count comes back as whole months and leftover days, and the add mode accepts negative month counts to move backward.
Why did my subscription bill on the 28th after starting on the 31st?
The billing system stored the last day of the month instead of the 31st, so it clamps every short month. That is normal behavior for end-of-month billing, not a bug.
How many paychecks in a year?
26 if you are paid biweekly and 24 if you are paid semimonthly. Monthly pay is 12 checks, and weekly pay is 52.
Is 2026 a leap year?
No. 2026 is not divisible by 4, so February has 28 days. The next leap year is 2028, and 2100 will not be one because it is a century year not divisible by 400.
How long is a fiscal quarter?
Three calendar months, which works out to 90 to 92 days. In the 2027 calendar year the four quarters run 90, 91, 92 and 92 days.
How do I count months for a baby's age?
Use completed months from the birth date, not weeks divided by four. A baby born January 31 is one month old on February 28, which is how pediatric schedules count.
What does a 30 day notice period mean if it starts in February?
It means 30 calendar days, so a notice served February 1, 2027 ends March 3. A one month notice served the same day ends March 1, two days earlier.
