1:12 Scale Calculator

In 1:12 scale, one model inch equals one real foot, because every real length is divided by twelve. An 88 inch ceiling becomes 7.33 model inches, a 200 cm person becomes 16.67 cm, and a 6 inch model figure implies a 72 inch, six foot person. The division works in any unit, since the ratio carries no unit of its own.

Enter a real length in inches, feet, centimeters or meters and read the 1:12 model size, or run a model piece back up to full size. One model inch stands for one real foot.

What 1:12 scale means

1:12 scale is a ratio between a model and the thing it copies: the first number is the size on the model, the second is the size in the real world, and the colon reads as one twelfth. Every linear dimension of the real object is divided by 12, so one model inch stands for 12 real inches, which is one real foot. Hobbyists call it one inch scale for that reason, and it is written 1 inch = 1 foot, or 1" = 1'-0" on drawings.

The ratio carries no unit of its own. One model centimeter stands for 12 real centimeters, one model millimeter for 12 real millimeters, so the same division serves inches, feet, centimeters and meters alike. The scale factor is 1/12 = 0.0833, and its inverse is 12, which is the only multiplier this page needs.

The inch and the foot it rests on are fixed by definition. NIST Handbook 44, Appendix B (2023) records the standing relationship 12 inches = 1 foot, and the inch itself has been pinned to the metric system since the international agreement of July 1, 1959. NIST Letter Circular 1033 (1959) prints that agreement: one international inch equals 25.4 millimeters exactly. Because the factor is exact rather than measured, a 1:12 conversion never carries rounding drift between the inch and metric worlds.

The two directions: real to model and model to real

Sizing a model from a real object is one division. Real length in inches, divided by 12, gives the model length in the same units. A living room ceiling of 88 inches becomes 88 / 12 = 7.33 model inches, which reads as 7 and one third inches on a ruler. A 96 inch wall becomes exactly 8 model inches, and a 54 inch double bed becomes 4.5 inches wide.

Running the other way multiplies by 12. A sofa that measures 9 model inches implies a real sofa of 9 x 12 = 108 inches, which is 9 feet. A figure 5.5 inches tall implies a person of 5.5 x 12 = 66 inches, or 5 feet 6 inches. This direction is the useful one when a piece arrives unlabeled and the only question is which scale it belongs to.

Lengths already written in feet take a shortcut: the 12 inches per foot in the measurement cancels the 12 of the scale, so a 10 foot wall models at 10 inches and an 8 foot ceiling at 8 inches. Anyone working from a floor plan can trace it straight onto a 1:12 layout without touching a calculator, and the widget below runs both directions on any value and unit you give it.

Worked example: a 10 by 12 foot bedroom at 1:12

Take a real bedroom 10 feet by 12 feet with an 8 foot ceiling and convert each dimension. The 10 foot wall is 120 real inches, so 120 / 12 = 10 model inches. The 12 foot wall gives 144 / 12 = 12 model inches. The ceiling height of 8 feet gives 96 / 12 = 8 model inches. The whole room fits a 10 by 12 by 8 inch box, small enough to build on a shelf yet large enough to hold furniture with visible detail.

Furnish it the same way. A queen mattress measures 60 by 80 real inches, so the model bed is 60 / 12 = 5 inches wide and 80 / 12 = 6.67 inches long. A 30 inch high nightstand becomes 2.5 model inches. A person of 5 feet 6 inches, 66 real inches, stands 66 / 12 = 5.5 model inches tall, which fixes the eye line for lighting and for hanging the pictures.

The area check confirms the plan: the real room covers 10 x 12 = 120 square feet, and each linear dimension has shrunk by 12, so the model floor covers 120 square inches. Volume shrinks by the cube, 12 x 12 x 12 = 1,728, and the numbers close on each other. The model box holds 10 x 12 x 8 = 960 cubic inches, and 960 x 1,728 = 1,658,880 cubic inches of real space, which is 1,658,880 / 1,728 = 960 cubic feet at 1,728 cubic inches per cubic foot, the volume of the 10 by 12 by 8 foot room we started with.

Common real sizes and their 1:12 model sizes

The table lists measurements that come up in almost every build, converted by the same division of 12. Real dimensions vary by manufacturer, so treat the first column as typical values rather than standards.

Two rows deserve a second look. The door and the person together set the sense of scale in any room box, and if both land in these ranges the whole scene reads correctly even when individual pieces are half an inch off. The sedan row shows why 1:12 model cars are display shelf objects rather than playset items: 15 inches is the length of a laptop.

Centimeters and meters at 1:12

Because the scale is a pure ratio, metric work skips unit conversion entirely and divides by 12 in whatever unit is at hand. A person of 200 cm becomes 200 / 12 = 16.67 cm. A wall of 2.4 meters becomes 240 / 12 = 20 cm. A 90 cm table becomes 7.5 cm. The only place the inch enters is the definition of the centimeter inch relationship itself, and that is exact: 1 inch = 25.4 mm since 1959, which NIST Special Publication 811 lists as a defining conversion factor.

The exact 25.4 produces a tidy pair of reference values. One model inch represents 12 real inches, and 12 x 25.4 = 304.8 mm, so a model inch stands for 30.48 real centimeters. Turned around, one real foot, 30.48 cm, models at exactly 2.54 cm. Metric builders can therefore check their work by remembering one number: a 1:12 model inch is 2.54 cm long on the model, the same 2.54 that converts the inch itself.

Nothing in the table needed a conversion factor between systems, because none of it left centimeters. Mixed work does need one, and the exact 2.54 cm per inch keeps the error at zero: 16.67 cm is the same model height as 6.56 model inches, and 6.56 x 12 = 78.7 real inches, the 200 cm person again.

How 1:12 sits among the other scales

Collector scales form a ladder of divisors, and the person height is the fastest way to tell them apart. Take the same 72 inch, six foot person and divide by each scale number: 1:6 gives 12 inches, the fashion doll size; 1:12 gives 6 inches; 1:24 gives 3 inches, the half scale that halves every 1:12 measurement; 1:48 gives 1.5 inches.

The 1:12 ratio owes its hold on the hobby partly to history. Queen Mary's Dolls' House, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and built between 1921 and 1924, is a 1:12 replica of an Edwardian residence with working lifts and running water, and the Royal Collection Trust (2024) marks its centenary as the largest and most famous dolls' house in the world. Manufacturers standardized furniture and fittings to it, and parts from different makers still fit the same rooms a century later.

The arithmetic price of choosing a larger divisor is detail. Area shrinks with the square of the divisor and volume with the cube. Moving from 1:12 to 1:24 puts a quarter of the area and an eighth of the volume in your hands. A real cubic foot is 1,728 cubic inches, so at 1:12 it becomes 1,728 / 1,728 = 1 model cubic inch, and at 1:24 it becomes 1,728 / 13,824 = 0.125 cubic inches, since 24 x 24 x 24 = 13,824. Door handles, book spines and hinges that carry detail at 1:12 vanish at 1:24.

How to check that a piece is 1:12

Unlabeled miniatures announce their scale through a few measurements. Measure the door first: 80 real inches becomes 6.67 model inches, so doors between 6.5 and 7 inches mark 1:12. Measure a person next, since figures are the most commonly bought pieces: 5.5 to 6 inches tall means 1:12, 11 to 12 inches means 1:6, and about 3 inches means 1:24. A chair seat of 1.5 model inches and a table top 2.5 model inches off the floor close the case.

The ceiling test works on rooms and room boxes. Real ceilings run 8 to 10 feet, so a 1:12 interior stands 8 to 10 model inches to the ceiling. A box only 5 or 6 inches tall houses a smaller scale, and one 16 inches tall a larger one.

An architect's scale ruler settles it without arithmetic at all. Its edge marked in twelfths assigns one of those twelfths to a foot, which is the 1:12 definition drawn in brass. Lay the scale on any piece, read the feet, and the label question is answered. The widget below does the same job for lengths the ruler cannot reach, in either direction and in four units.

Frequently asked questions

What does 1:12 scale mean?

Every length on the model is one twelfth of the matching real length. One model inch represents 12 real inches, one model centimeter represents 12 real centimeters, and the scale factor is 1/12 = 0.0833.

Why is 1:12 called one inch scale?

Because one model inch stands for one real foot. A 7 foot ceiling becomes a 7 inch ceiling, a 6 foot person becomes a 6 inch figure, and rulers divided in twelfths do the arithmetic without any calculation.

How tall is a 1:12 door?

An interior door of 80 real inches becomes 80 / 12 = 6.67 model inches, and its frame lands near 7 inches. Doors in that 6.5 to 7 inch range are a reliable sign of a true 1:12 piece.

How tall is a person at 1:12 scale?

A 5 foot 6 inch person is 66 real inches, so 66 / 12 = 5.5 model inches, and a 6 foot person becomes 6 inches. Figures much over 6 inches belong to a larger scale such as 1:6.

How do I convert centimeters at 1:12?

Divide by 12 exactly as with inches. A 200 cm person becomes 200 / 12 = 16.67 cm, and a 90 cm table becomes 7.5 cm. The ratio carries no unit, so the same division works in millimeters and meters.

What size is a 1:12 room box?

Feet map straight onto inches: a 10 by 12 foot room with an 8 foot ceiling becomes a 10 by 12 inch box, 8 inches tall. That one to one feel is the reason the scale suits floor plans so well.

How much does area shrink at 1:12?

Each linear dimension shrinks by 12, so area shrinks by 12 x 12 = 144 and volume by 1,728. A 120 square foot room covers 120 square inches on a floor plan drawn at 1:12.

What scale is a 12 inch doll?

A 12 inch figure represents a 6 foot, 72 inch person at 72 / 12 = 6 times model size, which is 1:6, the fashion doll scale. A 6 inch figure is the 1:12 one.

How wide is a 1:12 queen bed?

A queen mattress measures 60 by 80 real inches, so the 1:12 model is 60 / 12 = 5 inches wide and 80 / 12 = 6.67 inches long. A double bed at 54 inches wide models at 4.5 inches.

What is the 1:12 scale factor as a decimal?

1/12 = 0.08333, so a quick estimate multiplies real lengths by 0.083. Running it backwards, a model length times 12 recovers the real size: a 9 inch model sofa implies a 108 inch, 9 foot sofa.

Where did 1:12 scale come from?

The ratio was carried into collector miniatures by Queen Mary's Dolls' House, built between 1921 and 1924 as a 1:12 replica of an Edwardian residence, and it has stayed the standard for dollhouse furniture ever since.

Is 1:12 the same as 1 inch = 1 foot in metric work?

Yes. The ratio is unit free, so it also reads one model centimeter per real foot of 30.48 cm. A real foot models at 30.48 / 12 = 2.54 cm, which is exactly one model inch expressed in centimeters.
