Days Until Calculator

January 1, 2027 sits 68 days after October 25, 2026, which is 9 weeks and 5 days. Strip 18 weekend days and four federal holidays and 46 business days remain, so a 10 business day task has to start by December 17.

Pick a target date to get the days, weeks, months, business days and US federal holidays remaining, then work backward to the latest date you can start a task and still make it.

What this calculator counts

Days until is a one way countdown. Pick a target date and the calculator measures the calendar days between today, or a start date you choose, and the target. It then breaks the same span into weeks and days, calendar months and days, hours and minutes, weekend days, business days and US federal holidays, and stamps four percentage checkpoints along the way.

The second job is backward planning. Enter how long the task takes, in business days or calendar days, and the calculator returns the latest date you can start and still finish inside the span, plus the slack, the room between today and that start date. A countdown that only counts is trivia; the start date is the part that changes what you do on Monday.

The default span runs from October 25, 2026 to January 1, 2027, and the numbers in the examples on this page come from it: 68 days, 46 business days, and a December 17 start for a 10 business day lead.

Inclusive and exclusive counting

The day count treats the start day as day zero and the target as the last day, so October 25 to January 1 is 68 days. Flip the switch to count the start day as day one and the same span reads 69. Neither is wrong; countdowns, lease terms and legal deadlines each pick a side, and most day count mistakes come from mixing the two without noticing.

The hours row follows the same rule as the days row: it measures midnight to midnight, so 68 days is 1,632 hours and 97,920 minutes exactly. A countdown to a specific clock time works differently, because it counts elapsed time and includes the partial day, which is the job of a time until tool rather than a date count.

Business days and the federal holiday list

Business days here mean Monday through Friday minus the holidays the US Office of Personnel Management publishes for federal employees under 5 U.S.C. 6103. The calculator carries the observed dates for 2026, 2027 and 2028, including the shifts the OPM applies: when a holiday falls on a Saturday the preceding Friday is observed, and when it falls on a Sunday the following Monday is. Christmas 2026 lands on a Friday, so December 25 is the observed day, while New Year's Day 2028 lands on a Saturday, so the holiday appears on December 31, 2027.

2026 dateHoliday
January 1New Year's Day
January 19Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
February 16Washington's Birthday
May 25Memorial Day
June 19Juneteenth National Independence Day
July 3Independence Day, observed
September 7Labor Day
October 12Columbus Day
November 11Veterans Day
November 26Thanksgiving Day
December 25Christmas Day

The default span holds four of these: Veterans Day on November 11, Thanksgiving on November 26, Christmas on December 25 and New Year's Day itself on January 1. That turns 50 weekdays into 46 business days. If your own calendar adds company holidays, subtract them the same way from the weekday count.

Working backward to the latest start date

Give the calculator a lead time and it walks back from the target, skipping weekends and holidays when you chose business days, until it has stepped over that many working days. The date it lands on is the last day you can begin, counting the start day as day one of the work, with every working day of the lead inside the span and none of it after the deadline.

The default span makes the point. Ten business days before January 1, 2027 is December 17, 2026, because the walk back loses two weekends and two holidays inside those three weeks. A 10 calendar day lead would not need to start until December 22. The slack row shows what that buys: 53 calendar days, or 37 business days, between October 25 and the latest start.

Treat the answer as a floor, not a plan. The tool returns the latest possible start with zero margin, and any rework round, approval delay or sick day eats margin you did not build. A common habit is to add one working week to the lead and let the calculator price that version too.

Weeks, months and hours from the same span

The same 68 days reads as 9 weeks and 5 days, 2 months and 7 days, 1,632 hours or 97,920 minutes. The weeks are exact because a week is always 7 days. Months are not: a calendar month runs 28 to 31 days, so the calculator subtracts whole months first and then counts leftover days against the real length of the month before the target, the borrowing rule date arithmetic uses everywhere. October 25 to December 25 is 2 months, and December 25 to January 1 adds 7 more days.

Leap years sit inside this arithmetic. The Gregorian calendar, the civil calendar in use today, adds a leap day every fourth year except centurial years not divisible by 400, as the US Naval Observatory's leap year notes explain, so a span crossing February 29 carries one day more than the same span a year earlier.

April 15, 202717224 weeks 4 days1185 months 21 days
July 4, 202725236 weeks1728 months 9 days

Read the table as a lesson in uneven calendars: the jump from 61 to 68 days adds 4 business days for 7 calendar days, because the holidays bunch up in late December, and the month count drops faster than the week count once a span crosses a short month.

Milestones, checkpoints and partial spans

Long countdowns drift unless you cut them into pieces, so the calculator stamps the 25%, half and 75% points of the span as dates. For the default span those land on November 11, November 28 and December 15, 2026, with the target on January 1. Each row also shows the days from the start, 17, 34 and 51, which are the numbers to book against when you schedule work backward from the deadline.

The checkpoints pair with the lead time. The latest start for the default 10 business day lead is December 17, which sits just past the 75% mark on December 15, another way of saying the lead nearly fills the span and the slack is thin. When the latest start lands before the halfway point instead, the deadline is comfortable and the risk sits in the middle of the project rather than the end.

Milestones work for money as well as time. A 68 day project that must land on January 1 should show roughly half its total spend by November 28, and a budget that has not reached that mark is behind schedule even if the calendar still looks roomy.

Where date counts go wrong

Four errors account for most wrong day counts. The first is the off by one already covered: counting both endpoints for a countdown, or neither for an inclusive window. The second is forgetting that the target day counts: from October 25, January 1 is 68 days away, not 67, because January 1 itself sits inside the count.

The third is time zones and clock changes. This calculator works in whole local dates, so a span of days is the same number in every zone. But a span measured in elapsed hours moves: between the March and November clock changes, 68 calendar days hold 1,632 midnight to midnight hours yet 1,631 or 1,633 elapsed hours depending on direction. Count dates for deadlines and elapsed time for clocks, and the two never collide. Writing a date as 2027-01-01, the ISO 8601 order that puts the year first, removes the 01/02 ambiguity before any arithmetic starts.

The fourth is assuming every month or year behaves like the last. February holds 28 days three years in four, and 2100 will not be a leap year at all under the Gregorian rule the Naval Observatory documents. The calculator handles this by arithmetic on real calendar dates rather than by multiplying an average month length, so a span from January 25 to March 1 reads 35 days, the sum of 6 January days, 28 February days and 1 March day, rather than a rounded 33 or 37.

Frequently asked questions

Does the day count include today?

By default, no. Today is day zero and the count starts tomorrow, so October 25 to January 1 is 68 days. Switch to counting the start day as day one and the same span reads 69.

How many days until January 1, 2027?

From October 25, 2026 it is 68 days, which is 9 weeks and 5 days, and January 1 falls on a Friday.

How are business days counted?

Mondays through Fridays, minus the US federal holidays the OPM lists for 2026, 2027 and 2028. The default span holds 50 weekdays and 4 holidays, leaving 46 business days.

Which holidays fall in the example span?

Veterans Day on November 11, Thanksgiving on November 26, Christmas on December 25, 2026, and New Year's Day on January 1, 2027, a total of 4.

What does the latest start date mean?

It is the last date you can begin a task of your chosen lead time and still finish before the deadline. For a 10 business day lead ending January 1, 2027, it is December 17, 2026, counting the start day as day one.

Why does a 10 business day lead need 15 calendar days here?

Because two weekends and two holidays sit inside the window from December 17 to December 31, so only 10 of the 15 days are working days.

How many hours are in 68 days?

1,632 hours, or 97,920 minutes, measured midnight to midnight. A clock based countdown across a daylight saving change would differ by one hour.

How many months and days is 68 days?

2 months and 7 days, because October 25 to December 25 is exactly 2 months and December 25 to January 1 adds 7 days. Month counts change with the months involved.

Does the calculator handle leap years?

Yes, it works on real calendar dates. January 1, 2028 is 433 days from October 25, 2026, and that span carries 15 federal holidays in the 2026 to 2028 list.

What are the percentage checkpoints?

The 25%, half and 75% marks of the span. For the default span they fall on November 11, November 28 and December 15, 2026, at 17, 34 and 51 days from the start.

What happens if the target date has passed?

The calculator says so instead of returning a negative number, and the milestone table stays empty until you pick a future date.

Can I count from a date other than today?

Yes. Choose a start date and the count anchors there: December 25, 2026 to January 1, 2027 is 7 days, with 4 business days between them.

How is this different from a days between dates calculator?

A span tool measures two dates you enter. This one anchors on today by default, splits the countdown into business days and holidays, and works backward to the latest start date a lead time allows.
