Florida Sales Tax Calculator
A $1,200 purchase in Miami-Dade County carries $72.00 of state tax at 6 percent plus $12.00 of county surtax at 1 percent, so the tax is $84.00 and the total is $1,284.00. The same purchase in Orange County costs $1,278.00, and in Collier County, which has no surtax, $1,272.00.

What you pay in Florida: state tax plus a county surtax
Florida sales tax has two layers. The state charges 6 percent on the sale of most tangible goods, and most counties add a discretionary sales surtax of their own. The two are added together, so the rate you pay depends on where the purchase happens.
The county layer is called a discretionary sales surtax because each county decides whether to levy it, and the Florida Legislature caps it. Rates run from 0.5 percent to 2 percent, and a handful of counties levy none at all. Add that to the 6 percent state rate and the combined rate is somewhere between 6.0 percent and 8.0 percent.
The surtax follows the item, not the shop. If you buy a sofa in a county with no surtax and have it delivered into a county with one, the delivering county's rate applies, because that is where the sale is considered to take place. Motor vehicles and mobile homes are the exception, and they use the county of the buyer's home address.
All of this is published by the state. The Florida Department of Revenue sales tax page explains the rules and links to the county rate list, which is the source for the numbers used on this page.
County discretionary surtax rates for 2026
The county rates below are the total surtax in each county for calendar year 2026, taken from the Department of Revenue publication DR-15DSS (revision 11/25). Add 6 percent to any number in the first column to get the combined rate.
| County surtax | Counties | Combined rate with the 6 percent state tax |
|---|---|---|
| No county surtax | Citrus, Collier | 6.0 percent |
| 0.5 percent | Hernando, Lee, Martin, Orange, Palm Beach, St. Johns, Volusia | 6.5 percent |
| 1.0 percent | Baker, Bay, Bradford, Brevard, Broward, Charlotte, Dixie, Flagler, Gilchrist, Glades, Gulf, Hardee, Indian River, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Manatee, Miami-Dade, Nassau, Okaloosa, Okeechobee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, Santa Rosa, Sarasota, Seminole, St. Lucie, Sumter, Suwannee, Taylor, Union, Walton | 7.0 percent |
| 1.5 percent | Alachua, Calhoun, Clay, Columbia, DeSoto, Duval, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Hendry, Highlands, Hillsborough, Holmes, Jackson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Osceola, Wakulla, Washington | 7.5 percent |
| 2.0 percent | Hamilton | 8.0 percent |
Rates are not fixed forever. The Department revises the list each November for the year ahead, and individual surtaxes carry expiration dates, so a county can move up or down on 1 January. Two counties changed for 2026: Palm Beach and Martin both dropped from 1.0 percent to 0.5 percent, one because a school capital outlay surtax was repealed and the other because a school surtax expired. If you are reading this close to a year end, check the current list before relying on a rate for a large purchase.
Worked example: a $1,200 laptop in four counties
Take a laptop with a $1,200.00 price tag before tax. The state takes 6 percent of $1,200.00, which is $72.00, in every county. What changes is the second line.
| County | Surtax | State tax | County tax | Total tax | Total you pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Miami-Dade | 1.0 percent | $72.00 | $12.00 | $84.00 | $1,284.00 |
| Orange | 0.5 percent | $72.00 | $6.00 | $78.00 | $1,278.00 |
| Hamilton | 2.0 percent | $72.00 | $24.00 | $96.00 | $1,296.00 |
| Collier | none | $72.00 | $0.00 | $72.00 | $1,272.00 |
The spread between the cheapest and the dearest county on this one purchase is $24.00, which is the difference between 0 and 2 percent of $1,200.00. Put another way, every $100.00 you spend costs $6.00 of tax in Collier County, $7.00 in Miami-Dade and $8.00 in Hamilton.
On a bigger purchase the gap grows in the same proportion. Ten thousand dollars of furniture carries $600.00 of state tax everywhere in Florida, plus anywhere from nothing to $200.00 more depending on the delivery address.
Worked example: a receipt that already includes tax
Sometimes the number you have is the total, not the price. If you paid $1,070.00 for something in a 7.0 percent county and want to know the price and the tax, divide by 1.07. That gives $1,000.00 of price and $70.00 of tax.
The check runs the other way: $1,000.00 times 1.07 is $1,070.00. In a 6.5 percent county the same $1,000.00 item would come to $1,065.00, so a total of $1,065.00 divides by 1.065 to give $1,000.00 and $65.00 of tax. The calculator shows this line automatically, so you can paste in a receipt total and see what part of it was tax.
This matters for anything you can deduct or reimburse. If you are claiming state sales tax paid as an itemized deduction, the figure you need is the tax, not the total, and the IRS sales tax deduction calculator is the tool the federal side points to.
What is taxed and what is not
Florida taxes the sale of tangible personal property, which covers most of what people budget for: furniture, electronics, appliances, clothing, cars, boats and building materials. Clothing is taxed here, unlike in a few states that exempt it.
The main exemptions that show up in a household budget are groceries and medicine. Most food products bought to be prepared and eaten at home are exempt, while prepared food, restaurant meals and drinks sold ready to drink are taxed. Prescription medicines are exempt. Beyond that the list gets detailed, covering things like certain medical equipment, agricultural items and manufacturing machinery, and the Department of Revenue publishes the full list.
Services are mostly outside the tax. Repair labor that is billed separately from parts is generally not taxed, while the parts are. Labour that is part of producing or installing something can be taxed differently again, and work on real property follows its own set of rules. If a line on your bill is labor rather than goods, ask the business how it treats that line before you assume the rate applies.
Florida has also run annual sales tax holidays for things like disaster supplies, school supplies and clothing in some years. The dates, the items and the price limits change from year to year, so treat them as a bonus rather than something to plan a purchase around, and check the current year list before assuming an item is free of tax.
Vehicles, boats and mobile homes
Vehicles follow a different rule for the county layer. The surtax rate that applies to a motor vehicle or a mobile home is the rate in the county of the purchaser's home address, not the county where the dealer sits, because that is where the vehicle will be used. The same 6 percent state rate applies either way.
On a purchase from a dealer, the dealer collects the tax and the surtax and handles the paperwork. On a private sale, there is no dealer to collect anything, and the tax is paid when the buyer registers the vehicle with the county tax collector. If you are budgeting for a private sale, work the tax into the price you can afford rather than discovering it at the counter.
Boats and aircraft have their own registration and use tax rules, and a vessel bought outside Florida and brought in can owe use tax as well. For anything with a title and a hull number, ask the tax collector's office what applies before you rely on a number from a general calculator.
Mistakes that cost money
Most sales tax errors on a Florida bill come from one of five things, and each one is easy to check.
- Using last year's county rate. The list is revised each November, so a rate you memorised may be a year out of date. Palm Beach and Martin both moved to 0.5 percent for 2026.
- Billing the store's county instead of the delivery county. The surtax follows where the item lands, so a delivery across a county line changes the rate.
- Forgetting the surtax on a big ticket item. At 1 percent, a $30,000.00 purchase carries $300.00 of county tax on top of the $1,800.00 state tax, and 2 percent doubles the county part to $600.00.
- Assuming labor is taxed. A quote that splits parts and labor may tax only the parts. Ask before you add 6 or 7 percent to the whole figure.
- Applying one rate to the whole state. A business selling into several counties collects a different combined rate for each one, and that is normal.
When the amount is small, the difference between counties is a couple of dollars and not worth the effort. When it is a car, a boat or a kitchen, the county column on the rate list is worth two minutes of your time.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Florida sales tax rate in 2026?
The state rate is 6 percent. Most counties add a discretionary surtax of 0.5 to 2 percent, so the combined rate is between 6.0 and 8.0 percent. Miami-Dade, Broward and most large counties sit at 7.0 percent.
Which Florida county has the highest sales tax?
Hamilton County, at 2 percent surtax, for a combined rate of 8.0 percent. On a $1,200 purchase that is $96.00 of tax against $72.00 in a county with no surtax.
Do any Florida counties have no sales tax surtax?
Yes. Citrus and Collier levy no discretionary surtax, so the combined rate there is the state rate alone, 6.0 percent. A $1,200 purchase totals $1,272.00.
How much is sales tax on $1,000 in Florida?
It depends on the county: $60.00 where there is no surtax, $70.00 at a 1 percent surtax, which covers Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach is now lower at 0.5 percent so $65.00, and up to $80.00 in Hamilton County.
Does the county surtax follow the store or the delivery address?
The delivery address. The surtax applies to the county the item is delivered into, which is why a store in one county can charge a neighbour county's rate. Motor vehicles and mobile homes use the buyer's home address instead.
What is the sales tax rate in Miami-Dade County?
7.0 percent combined, which is 6 percent state plus a 1 percent county surtax. On $500.00 of taxable goods that is $35.00 of tax and a total of $535.00.
What is the sales tax rate in Orange County, home of Orlando?
6.5 percent combined, which is 6 percent state plus a 0.5 percent surtax. On $500.00 of taxable goods that is $32.50 of tax and a total of $532.50.
Is food taxed in Florida?
Most groceries bought to prepare at home are exempt, while prepared food, restaurant meals and drinks sold ready to drink are taxed at the full combined rate.
Is clothing taxed in Florida?
Yes. Unlike a few states that exempt clothing, Florida taxes it at the full combined rate, except during a sales tax holiday that covers it, which changes each year.
How do I work out the price when I only have the total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate as a decimal. A total of $1,070.00 in a 7.0 percent county is $1,070.00 divided by 1.07, which is $1,000.00 of price and $70.00 of tax.
Do services have sales tax in Florida?
Most services are not taxed. Repair labor billed separately from parts is generally not taxed while the parts are, so a single combined quote can hide a difference. Ask the business how it treats the labor line.
How often do county rates change?
The Department of Revenue publishes the county list each November for the year ahead, and individual surtaxes carry their own start and end dates. Palm Beach and Martin both moved to 0.5 percent for 2026.
