Inches to Yards Converter
36 inches make 1 yard, so divide inches by 36. 90 inches is 2.5 yards, 18 inches is 0.5 yards, 144 inches is 4 yards, and 45 inches is 1.25 yards. A 1/8 inch mark is 0.0035 yards, so yard figures need four decimals.
Type in either box, both directions convert as you type.
Formula: yards = inches ÷ 36, and inches = yards × 36. One yard is 3 feet, exact by definition.

Type inches and read yards, or type yards and read inches. The factor is exact: 36 inches make one yard, and every example shows where the division lands on a tape measure.
Key takeaways
- 1 yard = 36 inches, exact since the 1959 agreement
- yards = inches ÷ 36, so 90 inches is 2.5 yards
- 1 inch = 0.0278 yard, and 1/8 inch is 0.0035 yard
- Quarter yard cuts: 1/8 yd = 4.5 in, 1/4 yd = 9 in, 3/4 yd = 27 in
- A 16 inch stud spacing is 0.4444 yard

36 inches in a yard, and the number is exact
A yard is three feet of twelve inches, which puts 36 inches in every yard with no rounding involved. So the conversion is one division: yards = inches ÷ 36. The return trip is one multiplication: inches = yards × 36. A 90 inch cut is 2.5 yards, and 2.5 yards is 90 inches.
The figure has been fixed by agreement since July 1, 1959, when the English-speaking countries adopted one international yard of 0.9144 meter and an inch of 25.4 millimeters. NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C prints the chain as 12 inches = 1 foot, 3 feet = 1 yard, 1 yard = 36 inches, and marks those numbers exact. The Federal Register notice behind the change, document 59-5442, lists 1 yard = 0.9144 meter and notes the new yard was two parts per million shorter than the 1893 definition. 15 U.S. Code 205 repeats the same value for trade.
None of that history changes the arithmetic. The inch and the yard are both whole multiples of the same base, so 36 is a definition rather than a measurement, and no tape error enters the answer until someone reads the tape.
Dividing by 36 and keeping the leftover in inches
Long division is the honest way to work this when the number is not a clean multiple. Take 100 inches. It holds two full yards, because 2 × 36 = 72, and 100 - 72 = 28, so the answer is 2 yards 28 inches, or 2.7778 yards in decimal form.
The same routine handles numbers under a yard, where the whole yard part is zero: 18 ÷ 36 = 0.5. Moving down the scale, 27 ÷ 36 = 0.75, and 9 ÷ 36 = 0.25. Decimals are what fabric shops and landscape suppliers use, because their price lists are quoted per yard.
| Inches | Yards (decimal) | Yards and inches | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 45 | 1.25 | 1 yd 9 in | 1 × 36 + 9 = 45 |
| 50 | 1.3889 | 1 yd 14 in | 36 + 14 = 50 |
| 90 | 2.5 | 2 yd 18 in | 72 + 18 = 90 |
| 100 | 2.7778 | 2 yd 28 in | 72 + 28 = 100 |
| 110 | 3.0556 | 3 yd 2 in | 108 + 2 = 110 |
| 150 | 4.1667 | 4 yd 6 in | 144 + 6 = 150 |
Read the check column as a second opinion. Each row multiplies the whole yards by 36, adds the leftover inches, and lands back on the starting figure, which is the fastest way to catch a division slip before it reaches a saw.
Worked examples from a cut list, a pattern and a garden bed
A board. A standard 8 foot board is 96 inches. 96 ÷ 36 = 2.6667 yards, which is 2 yards 24 inches because 2 × 36 = 72 and 96 - 72 = 24. Buying a 3 yard length instead leaves 3 - 2.6667 = 0.3333 yard, or 12 inches, of offcut.
A cut list. Four rails at 22.5 inches and three stiles at 18 inches total 4 × 22.5 = 90 inches plus 3 × 18 = 54 inches, which is 144 inches. Then 144 ÷ 36 = 4.0 yards exactly, so one 4 yard length covers the list. Add the kerf before ordering: seven cuts at 1/8 inch each remove 7 × 0.125 = 0.875 inch, which is 0.0243 yard.
A pattern. A sewing pattern that asks for 2.5 yards of 45 inch fabric needs 2.5 × 36 = 90 inches of length and 45 ÷ 36 = 1.25 yards of width. The area check runs 90 × 45 = 4,050 square inches, and 4,050 ÷ 1,296 = 3.125 square yards, the same answer as 2.5 × 1.25.
A garden bed. Ten rows set 18 inches apart take nine gaps, so the planting runs 9 × 18 = 162 inches, and 162 ÷ 36 = 4.5 yards. A bed 4 feet wide is 48 ÷ 36 = 1.3333 yards, while a 5/8 inch seam allowance on a cushion cover is 0.625 ÷ 36 = 0.0174 yard, small enough that the inch figure is the one worth keeping.
Tape measure fractions written as yards
Tape measures divide the inch into eighths, and those marks shrink fast when they are written in yards. An eighth of an inch is 0.125 ÷ 36 = 0.00347 yard, a figure that needs four decimals before it says anything useful. The table covers the marks a shop ruler prints.
| Tape mark | Inches | Fraction of a yard | Decimal yards |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/8 | 0.125 | 1/288 | 0.0035 |
| 1/4 | 0.25 | 1/144 | 0.0069 |
| 3/8 | 0.375 | 1/96 | 0.0104 |
| 1/2 | 0.5 | 1/72 | 0.0139 |
| 5/8 | 0.625 | 5/288 | 0.0174 |
| 3/4 | 0.75 | 1/48 | 0.0208 |
| 7/8 | 0.875 | 7/288 | 0.0243 |
Yard first cuts run the other way and land on friendlier numbers. One eighth of a yard is 4.5 inches, one quarter is 9 inches, one third is 12 inches, one half is 18 inches, and three quarters is 27 inches. That is why a quilt shop sells a fat quarter as an 18 by 22 inch piece rather than as a decimal of a yard.
For anything measured to the eighth of an inch, stay in inches and convert once at the end. Rounding 0.00347 yard to 0.003 misses by 0.00047 yard, which is 0.017 inch, enough to open a mitre joint.
Inches to yards table for common readings
The table below covers the readings a shop, a sewing table and a garden plan produce most often, with the feet and inches equivalent in the middle so the number can be checked against a tape.
| Inches | Yards | Feet and inches | Typical reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 0.1667 | 6 in | Hem allowance |
| 12 | 0.3333 | 1 ft | Ruler length |
| 18 | 0.5 | 1 ft 6 in | Garden row spacing |
| 24 | 0.6667 | 2 ft | Two foot rule |
| 27 | 0.75 | 2 ft 3 in | Three quarter yard |
| 36 | 1 | 3 ft | One yard of fabric |
| 45 | 1.25 | 3 ft 9 in | Fabric width |
| 54 | 1.5 | 4 ft 6 in | Wide fabric width |
| 72 | 2 | 6 ft | Two yards |
| 90 | 2.5 | 7 ft 6 in | Curtain panel |
| 108 | 3 | 9 ft | Three yards |
| 144 | 4 | 12 ft | Four yards |
Every row is the same division. From 36 inches to 144 inches the yard value is a whole number or a half, and the decimal column repeats in steps of 0.1667 for every 6 inches, so an 18 inch spacing is three of those steps and 0.5 yard.
Where a yard carries the number better than an inch
Yards win once a length passes about 3 feet. The playing field between the goal lines of an American football field is 100 yards, which is 100 × 36 = 3,600 inches, and with both 10 yard end zones included the full field is 120 yards or 4,320 inches. A 25 yard swimming pool is 900 inches, and a 400 yard golf hole is 14,400 inches.
Trade uses the same split. Fabric, sod, mulch and chain link fence are priced by the yard, while a cabinet door, a shelf and a stud spacing stay in inches. A 16 inch stud spacing is 16 ÷ 36 = 0.4444 yard, and three of those spacings cover 48 inches or 1.3333 yards, which is the figure a framer checks before ordering.
Square yards are a separate unit, and the confusion costs money. A square yard is 36 × 36 = 1,296 square inches, so a 12 by 9 foot rug covers 108 × 108 = 11,664 square inches, which is 11,664 ÷ 1,296 = 9 square yards, not 108.
Reading the yard marks on a tape measure
Most US tapes print inches along one edge, with a red mark every 16 inches for stud layout, and feet in a second row. Yard marks appear every 36 inches on longer tapes, and the 3 on the foot row sits in the same place as the 1 on the yard row.
Reading a mixed mark is a two step job. A tape that stops at 7 feet 6 inches gives 7 × 12 + 6 = 90 inches, and 90 ÷ 36 = 2.5 yards. A mark at 2 yards 1 foot gives 2 × 36 + 12 = 84 inches, which is 84 ÷ 36 = 2.3333 yards. Do the feet first, then divide once.
Reading error dwarfs tape error here. A misread eighth of an inch is 0.0035 yard, while a misread foot is 12 ÷ 36 = 0.3333 yard, exactly 96 times larger, so count the foot marks before dividing and the fraction will look after itself.
Rounding mistakes that cost a cut
Dividing by 3 instead of 36. That confuses feet with yards. 90 ÷ 3 = 30 is not a yard count. 90 inches is 7.5 feet, and 7.5 ÷ 3 = 2.5 yards, so convert to feet first if that route feels natural.
Rounding too early. 96 ÷ 36 = 2.6667 yards, and 2.67 × 36 = 96.12 inches, a little over a tenth of an inch past the board. Keeping four decimals holds the error under 0.002 inch.
Mixing area into a length question. A square yard is 1,296 square inches, not 36, and 4,050 square inches of fabric is 4,050 ÷ 1,296 = 3.125 square yards. A yard of 45 inch fabric is 3.125 square yards, not 1.25.
Writing a fraction of a yard when a fraction of an inch is meant. 1/8 yard is 4.5 inches, while 1/8 inch is 0.0035 yard, and the two differ by a factor of 1,296. Two anchor checks catch all four slips: 36 inches must read 1 yard, and 90 inches must read 2.5 yards.
Frequently asked questions
How many inches are in a yard?
Exactly 36. A yard is 3 feet and a foot is 12 inches, so 3 x 12 = 36, and NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C marks the figure exact.
How do I convert inches to yards?
Divide by 36. 90 inches is 90 / 36 = 2.5 yards, and 100 inches is 100 / 36 = 2.7778 yards, or 2 yards 28 inches.
How many yards is 45 inches?
45 / 36 = 1.25 yards, which is 1 yard 9 inches because 1 x 36 = 36 and 45 - 36 = 9. It is also 3 feet 9 inches.
How many inches is 2.5 yards?
2.5 x 36 = 90 inches. That is a common curtain panel length and also 7 feet 6 inches.
How many inches are in a quarter yard?
9 inches. An eighth of a yard is 4.5 inches, a third is 12 inches, a half is 18 inches, and three quarters is 27 inches.
What is one inch as a fraction of a yard?
1/36 yard, or 0.0278 in decimal. An eighth of an inch is 1/288 yard, which is 0.00347 yard.
How many yards is an 8 foot board?
96 inches divided by 36 is 2.6667 yards, which is 2 yards 24 inches. A 3 yard length leaves 12 inches of offcut.
How many inches long is a football field?
100 yards between the goal lines is 3,600 inches. With both 10 yard end zones the full field is 120 yards or 4,320 inches.
Is a yard 3 feet or 36 inches?
Both, since 3 x 12 = 36. The 1959 international agreement ties the yard to 0.9144 meter and the inch to 25.4 millimeters, exactly.
Why does 1/8 inch come out as 0.0035 yards?
Because 0.125 / 36 = 0.003472. Four decimals are needed to keep that mark, which is why inch fractions are better left in inches.
How many square inches are in a square yard?
36 x 36 = 1,296 square inches. A 45 inch wide yard of fabric is 36 x 45 = 1,620 square inches, or 1.25 square yards.
What is a 16 inch stud spacing in yards?
16 / 36 = 0.4444 yard. Three spacings cover 48 inches, which is 1.3333 yards, and six cover 96 inches or 2.6667 yards.
Does a yard of fabric measure 36 inches?
Yes along the cut. Width is separate and usually runs 45 or 60 inches, so one yard of 45 inch fabric is 1.25 yards wide.
Can I divide by 3 instead of 36?
Only after converting to feet. 90 inches is 7.5 feet, and 7.5 / 3 = 2.5 yards, while 90 / 3 = 30 is wrong by a factor of 12.
