Mass and weight are not the same thing

A kilogram and a pound measure the same kind of quantity: how much matter is in an object. A newton measures something else: how hard gravity pulls on that matter. The distinction sounds academic until you step on a scale in a different gravity field. An astronaut with 75 kg of mass still has 75 kg on the Moon, but the force pressing on the bathroom scale drops from 735.5 N to 121.5 N.

In everyday US use the two words blur, and for good reason. NIST's guide to the SI defines the pound as a unit of mass equal to 0.45359237 kg exactly, and the ounce as one sixteenth of that pound. A US scale measures force, then dividing by standard gravity to display pounds of mass, which is why it reads correctly in your bathroom and wrongly on the Moon.

The formula that connects the two is short: weight equals mass times the local gravitational acceleration, a distinction explained in more detail on mass versus weight. On Earth the standard value is 9.80665 meters per second squared, so 75 kg produces 75 x 9.80665 = 735.5 N. That is 165.3 pounds of force, which is exactly the 165.3 lb the same mass shows on a scale. Earth is the one place where the numbers coincide, and the coincidence is built into the units on purpose.

The exact conversion factors

Mass conversions are unusually clean because the international pound is defined against the kilogram by treaty, with no measurement left in the chain. Everything below follows from 0.45359237 kg per pound, and the ounce, stone, short ton, long ton and grain are all simple fractions of that pound. The table lists the multipliers to grams, which is the easiest common base for hand checks, and the NIST factor tables carry the same values.

UnitGramsHow it is defined
Kilogram (kg)1,000SI base unit of mass
Gram (g)1One thousandth of a kilogram
Milligram (mg)0.001One thousandth of a gram
Pound (lb)453.59237Exact by international agreement
Ounce (oz)28.349523125One sixteenth of a pound
Stone (st)6,350.29318Fourteen pounds
Metric ton (t)1,000,000One thousand kilograms

Long ton1,016,046.90882,240 pounds
Carat (ct)0.2One fifth of a gram, for gemstones
Grain (gr)0.06479891One seven thousandth of a pound

Two of those rows catch people out. The metric ton and the US short ton differ by about 10 percent, 1,000 kg against 907.18 kg, so a shipping document that says "ton" without a country is ambiguous. The carat used for diamonds is a mass unit fixed at 0.2 g, not the karat used for gold purity, which is a ratio out of 24.

Worked example: 75 kg in pounds and ounces

Body weight is the most common reason Americans convert kilograms, usually after reading a study or a boxing weight class. Start with 75 kg and divide by the pound factor: 75 / 0.45359237 = 165.3467 lb. The whole part is 165 lb. The remainder, 0.3467 lb, times 16 gives 0.3467 x 16 = 5.547 oz, so the reading is 165 lb 5.5 oz.

Check it backwards. 165 lb is 165 x 16 = 2,640 oz. Add 5.5 oz and the total is 165 x 16 + 5.5 = 2,645.5 oz. Multiply by 28.349523 g per ounce and you get 74,998.7 g, which is 75.0 kg once the half ounce rounding is accounted for. A one gram gap on a 75 kg body is 0.001 percent, far below the day to day swing from water and food.

The same arithmetic handles gym plates, which come in mixed units. A 45 lb plate is 45 x 0.45359237 = 20.41 kg, so two of them plus a 20 kg bar total 60.82 kg. In pounds that is 60.82 times 2.2046, or 134.1 lb. Lifters who track volume in kilograms and plates in pounds do this conversion every session, and a 0.5 kg error on a plate adds up over a year of logging.

Worked example: a 3 lb 6 oz parcel

Shipping labels mix pounds and ounces on one side and kilograms on the other, and a small mistake changes the price. Take a parcel at 3 lb 6 oz. Convert the ounces to a fraction of a pound first: 6 / 16 = 0.375, so the parcel is 3 + 0.375 = 3.375 lb. Multiply by 0.45359237 and you get 3.375 x 0.45359237 = 1.53087 kg, which rounds to 1.531 kg or 1,530.9 g.

Now compare that with a label that says 1.5 kg. The true mass is 30.9 g heavier, about 2 percent. That gap is small enough to pass a bathroom scale and large enough to push a parcel into the next bracket at a carrier that bills in 0.5 kg steps. Ounces on their own are no better: 6 oz is 170.1 g, and rounding it to 170 g costs a tenth of a gram that matters only to a jeweler.

Carriers add their own wrinkle. Most bill by the greater of actual mass and dimensional weight, and the divisor differs by service, so a light box can be charged as a heavy one. The mass conversion is still the foundation: get the grams right, then compare that number with the dimensional figure the carrier prints. Baggage limits work the same way, with a 23 kg allowance equal to 50.7 lb, not the 50 lb many travelers assume.

Stone, tons and the units that linger

British body weight still runs on stone. One stone is 14 lb, or 6.35029 kg, so 11 st 4 lb means 11 times 14 plus 4, which is 158 lb, or 71.67 kg. A UK driver's license lists weight in stones and pounds, and a US reader converting 11 st 4 lb has to go through pounds before touching kilograms.

Tons are worse, because three different units share the name. The US short ton is 2,000 lb, or 907.18 kg. The long ton, still used in some UK shipping and coal contexts, is 2,240 lb, or 1,016.05 kg. The metric ton is 1,000 kg, or 2,204.6 lb. A cargo manifest that says 20 tons can mean 18,143 kg, 20,000 kg or 20,321 kg depending on which ton the shipper meant.

Small units have their own users. The grain, at 64.79891 mg, survives in ammunition and archery, where a 55 grain bullet weighs 3.56 g. The carat survives in gemstones, where a 1 carat diamond is 0.2 g and the price per carat climbs faster than the mass does. Neither unit shows up on a kitchen scale, and both are exact fractions of the pound or the gram, so the converter handles them without a special case.

What the same mass weighs on the Moon and Mars

Because weight is mass times local gravity, the same object presses down differently wherever it goes. Standard gravity on Earth is 9.80665 m/s2, on the Moon about 1.62 m/s2, and on Mars about 3.71 m/s2. Multiply and the differences appear at once: 75 kg weighs 735.5 N on Earth, 121.5 N on the Moon, and 278.3 N on Mars.

LocationGravity (m/s2)Weight of 75 kgIn pounds of force
Earth9.80665735.5 N165.3 lbf
Moon1.62121.5 N27.3 lbf
Mars3.71278.3 N62.6 lbf

Two practical notes follow. First, a scale calibrated on Earth will misreport on the Moon by the ratio of the gravity values, so a 75 kg astronaut would see about 27 lb on a spring scale and 75 kg on a balance scale, because a balance compares masses rather than forces. Second, the pound has two cousins: lb for mass and lbf for force. On Earth's surface they are numerically equal, which hides the distinction until someone tries to use lb in a physics equation and gets the units wrong.

Elevation and latitude change g by a small amount as well. Standard gravity is a defined constant, not a measurement of your kitchen, and local values run from about 9.76 to 9.83 m/s2 from the equator to the poles. That is a spread of under 1 percent, enough to matter in calibration labs and irrelevant to a recipe.

Where mass conversions go wrong

The most common error is mixing mass ounces with fluid ounces. An ounce of mass is 28.35 g. A US fluid ounce is a volume of 29.57 mL, and a fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 oz, so eight fluid ounces of water weigh 8.35 oz, not 8. Recipes that switch between the two produce a cake that is either dry or soupy, and the mistake is invisible in the numbers because both are called ounces.

The second error is rounding in the middle of a chain. Converting 75 kg to 165.3 lb and then back gives 74.98 kg, a 20 g loss that grows if the intermediate is rounded harder. Keep the exact factor until the final step, then round once. The same rule applies to stone: 11 st 4 lb should go through pounds as 158 lb before dividing by 2.2046, not through two separate rounded conversions.

The third is trusting a bathroom scale for anything precise. A home scale is typically accurate to about 0.2 kg and repeats within 0.1 kg, so a 75 kg reading can honestly be 74.8 or 75.2. For shipping, use a postal scale; for cooking, use grams; for a newborn, use the pediatric scale at the clinic. The converter is exact, but the number you feed it inherits the error of whatever measured it.

One more habit worth keeping: write the unit every time. "165" means nothing, "165 lb" means 74.8 kg, and "165 kg" means 364 lb. Most conversion mistakes that reach a customer are missing units, not bad arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds is 75 kg?

75 kg is 165.3467 lb, which rounds to 165.3 lb, or 165 lb 5.5 oz. The conversion divides by 0.45359237, the exact number of kilograms in a pound. Working back from 165 lb 5.5 oz gives 74,998.7 g, which rounds to 75.0 kg.

Is a pound a unit of mass or weight?

In US law and in NIST's guide to the SI, the pound is a unit of mass equal to 0.45359237 kg. In everyday speech people use it for weight, and on Earth's surface the numbers coincide. The force version is the pound-force, written lbf, equal to 4.4482216152605 N.

How many ounces are in a pound?

Sixteen, exactly. That makes 3 lb 6 oz equal to 3.375 lb, or 1.53087 kg. It also means 1 oz is 28.349523125 g, a value that comes straight from dividing the pound by 16.

How many grams is a kilogram?

One thousand, by definition. A milligram is one thousandth of a gram, so 1 kg is 1,000,000 mg. A metric ton is 1,000 kg, or 1,000,000 g.

What is the difference between a short ton and a long ton?

A US short ton is 2,000 lb, or 907.18 kg. A long ton is 2,240 lb, or 1,016.05 kg. A metric ton is 1,000 kg, or 2,204.6 lb. The three differ by up to 10 percent, so a shipping document should name which one it uses.

How many kilograms is 150 pounds?

150 lb times 0.45359237 is 68.0389 kg, which rounds to 68.04 kg. That is a common airline baggage figure: a 23 kg allowance equals 50.7 lb, slightly more than the 50 lb many travelers pack to.

How much is 11 stone 4 pounds in kg?

11 st 4 lb is 158 lb in total, since 11 times 14 is 154 and 154 plus 4 is 158. Multiply by 0.45359237 and you get 71.67 kg.

What does 5 kg weigh in pounds?

5 kg is 11.023 lb, so about 11 lb 0.4 oz. The same mass weighs 49.03 N on Earth, which is 11.02 lbf, and only 8.1 N on the Moon.

Why does my weight change on the Moon?

The mass does not change, only the force. A 75 kg astronaut weighs 735.5 N on Earth, 121.5 N on the Moon and 278.3 N on Mars. A balance scale still shows 75 kg on the Moon because it compares masses; a spring scale shows about 27 lb.

How many grams is 1 carat?

One carat is 0.2 g, or 200 mg. That is the gemstone carat, a mass unit. The karat used for gold is a purity ratio out of 24, so 18 karat gold is 75 percent gold by mass.

How much does a 55 grain bullet weigh in grams?

A grain is 64.79891 mg, so 55 grains is 3,563.9 mg, or 3.56 g. The grain is one seven thousandth of a pound, which is why it converts so cleanly to metric.

Can I convert ounces to fluid ounces?

Not directly. An ounce is mass at 28.35 g, a fluid ounce is volume at 29.57 mL, and the bridge between them is density. A fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 oz, while a fluid ounce of honey weighs about 1.5 oz.

Why do conversion answers differ by a few grams?

Rounding is the usual cause. Converting 75 kg to 165.3 lb and back gives 74.98 kg, a 20 g difference. Keep the exact factor of 0.45359237 until the last step and round once at the end.

Is a kilogram heavier than a pound?

Yes, by a factor of 2.2046. One kilogram is 2.2046 lb, so a 1 kg bag of flour is about 2 lb 3.3 oz. The same logic makes a 1 lb package 0.4536 kg.
