Ounces to Pounds Converter

One pound holds 16 ounces, so dividing ounces by 16 gives pounds. A 26 oz package is 1.625 lb, which a scale shows as 1 lb 10 oz, and it weighs 737.09 g. Going the other way, multiply pounds by 16: 2.5 lb is 40 oz.

Enter a weight in ounces or pounds and get the other unit, plus pounds and ounces together, grams, kilograms and troy ounces.

26 oz on the scale: 1 whole pound plus 10 leftover ounces Each small block is 2 oz, so 16 of them fill one pound. 1 lb (8 blocks x 2 oz = 16 oz) 10 oz left over (5 blocks) 26 oz = 1.625 lb = 1 lb 10 oz = 737.09 g 26 divided by 16 is 1 with 10 left over, so the scale reads 1 lb 10 oz. The decimal answer 1.625 and the scale answer 1 lb 10 oz describe the same weight.
26 oz split into 1 whole pound and 10 leftover ounces, the way a US scale reads it.

Divide by 16 and you have pounds

One pound holds 16 ounces, so the whole conversion is a single division. Take the number of ounces, divide by 16, and the answer is pounds. A 26 oz box is 26 / 16 = 1.625 lb. A 12 oz bag of coffee is 12 / 16 = 0.75 lb. The rule works at any size because the ratio between the two units never changes.

The table below runs the numbers for the weights people weigh most often, with the decimal form, the pounds and ounces form that most US scales show, and the metric weight in grams. The gram column uses the exact factor 28.349523125 g per ounce and rounds to two decimals.

Nothing physical changes when the unit changes. A box that weighs 26 oz still weighs 737.09 g; 1.625 lb, 1 lb 10 oz and 737.09 g are three ways of writing the same mass. Pick whichever form the recipe, the shipping form or the scale in front of you wants.

Reading the answer as pounds and ounces

Decimal pounds are handy for a spreadsheet and clumsy on a bathroom or kitchen scale. Scales in the United States show pounds and ounces, so the useful answer splits the weight into whole pounds plus leftover ounces. Divide the total ounces by 16, keep the whole number, and the remainder is the ounce part.

For 26 oz: 26 divided by 16 is 1 with 10 left over, so the scale reads 1 lb 10 oz. For 100 oz: 6 with 4 left over, so 6 lb 4 oz. A 7 oz letter never reaches a full pound, so it reads 0 lb 7 oz, or 0.4375 lb as a decimal.

The leftover ounces are sixteenths of a pound, which is why they land on the same fractions printed on rulers and measuring cups.

Leftover ouncesFraction of a poundDecimal pounds
1 oz1/160.0625
2 oz1/80.125
4 oz1/40.25
5 oz5/160.3125
8 oz1/20.5
10 oz5/80.625
12 oz3/40.75
14 oz7/80.875
15 oz15/160.9375

The same sixteenths show up on a US tape measure, where the marks between inch lines count up in sixteenths. Ounces and inches split a whole the same way, which is why the fractions on a ruler look familiar to anyone who has read a shipping scale.

Pounds to ounces, the other direction

Converting back is one multiplication. Pounds times 16 gives ounces, because 16 ounces make every pound. So 2.5 lb is 2.5 x 16 = 40 oz, 0.75 lb is 12 oz, and 5 lb is 80 oz.

Mixed weights convert the same way. A package marked 1 lb 10 oz holds 16 + 10 = 26 oz: multiply the pound part by 16, then add the ounces. A 3 lb 5 oz parcel is 48 + 5 = 53 oz.

25 lb400 oz11339.81 g

Watch the decimals here more than in the other direction. A tenth of a pound is 1.6 oz, not a tenth of an ounce, so 2.1 lb is 33.6 oz. If you round 2.1 lb down to 2 lb and read the 0.1 as one ounce, you land on 33 oz and lose 0.6 oz, more than half an ounce.

Three ounces that do not weigh the same

The word ounce names three different things, and only one of them is the weight unit this page converts. The everyday one is the avoirdupois ounce, 16 of which make a pound. Precious metals trade in troy ounces, which run heavier, and liquids are sold in fluid ounces, which measure volume rather than weight.

UnitSizeHow many per "pound"Typical use
Avoirdupois ounce (oz)28.349523125 g16 per poundGroceries, parcels, body weight
Troy ounce (ozt)31.1034768 g12 per troy poundGold, silver and other precious metals
US fluid ounce (fl oz)29.5735 mL128 per gallonLiquid volume on bottles and jugs

The numbers matter when money is involved. A troy pound is 12 troy oz, or 373.24 g, which works out to about 13.17 avoirdupois ounces. Anyone comparing a troy price against an avoirdupois weight without converting is comparing two different ounces.

Fluid ounces are the trickiest, because a fluid ounce of one liquid does not weigh the same as a fluid ounce of another. A 16.9 fl oz water bottle holds 499.79 mL. Water is close to 1 g per mL, so the bottle carries about 499.79 g of water, which is 17.63 oz of weight. Honey, oil and syrup all have different densities, so the same 16.9 fl oz bottle weighs something else in each case.

In the kitchen and at the store

Packaged food is where most people meet ounces and pounds. A 12 oz bag of chocolate chips is 0.75 lb and 340.19 g. A bag marked 1 lb 2 oz holds 18 oz, or 510.29 g, and doubling the recipe calls for 36 oz, which is 2 lb 4 oz.

Federal labels round on purpose. Under FDA nutrition labeling rules (21 CFR 101.9(b)(5)(viii)), 1 oz of weight counts as 28 g and 1 fl oz counts as 30 mL, so a package marked 8 oz (227 g) is using the rounded rule rather than the exact 226.80 g. The small gap is built into the labeling system, not a mistake by the brand.

The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service builds its nutrition charts for meat and poultry on a 3 oz serving of cooked meat, which it states as 84 g. Three 3 oz servings add up to 9 oz, or 0.5625 lb, a bit over half a pound of cooked meat.

When a recipe lists ounces of an ingredient and your scale shows grams, the calculator on this page gives the gram value directly, and the pounds and ounces form helps when the recipe doubles and the numbers stop landing on whole numbers.

Packages, postage and luggage

Shipping forms ask for pounds and ounces in separate boxes, which is where mixed readings earn their keep. An 18 oz parcel is 1 lb 2 oz, or 510.29 g, about 0.51 kg. A 14 oz item stays under the pound line at 0.875 lb.

Going the other way, a 3 lb 5 oz declaration means 53 oz, which is 1.50 kg. Airline weight limits are usually metric: the common 23 kg checked bag allowance is 50.71 lb, or 811.3 oz. If you only pack to "50 pounds", you leave 0.71 lb, about 11.4 oz, of the allowance unused.

Small rounding choices grow at parcel size. A box that truly weighs 3 lb 4.9 oz rounds to 3 lb 5 oz on one line and 3.31 lb on another. Neither is wrong; the first line is rounded to the nearest ounce and the second to the nearest hundredth of a pound. Keep the ounces column and the decimal column in separate boxes so a carrier does not read 3 lb and 4.9 oz as two weights.

Why 16, and why the numbers are exact

The 16 ounces per pound comes from the avoirdupois system, the weight system English trade settled on centuries ago and the United States inherited. Sixteen divides cleanly by 2, 4 and 8, which made halving and quartering weights practical with a balance scale long before anyone printed a conversion table.

The modern numbers are fixed by international agreement. In 1959 the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa agreed that the pound equals exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Because the ounce is defined as one sixteenth of that pound, 1 oz is exactly 28.349523125 g. NIST's SP 811 conversion tables list these factors, and factors this exact leave nothing to argue about.

Exactness is practical, not pedantic. Since the pound is tied to the kilogram, a metric conversion never drifts when standards bodies redefine the kilogram, as happened in 2019. Sixteen ounces are 1 lb, 453.59237 g, and that will still be true after any future redefinition.

It also means converting is reversible with zero loss. Divide 40 oz by 16 to get 2.5 lb, multiply 2.5 lb by 16 and you are back at 40 oz. Rounding is the only place information can disappear, which is the next topic.

Rounding and scale accuracy

Most kitchen scales resolve 0.1 oz, which is 2.83 g. A model that resolves 0.05 oz reads 1.42 g steps. Those resolutions set what rounding is safe: any extra digits past the scale's step are decoration.

The risk sits in the decimal form. One ounce is 0.0625 lb. If a form only takes two decimals and you round it to 0.06, every ounce loses 0.0025 lb, or 1.13 g. Scale that up: 100 oz entered as 6.00 lb instead of 6.25 lb reports a full quarter pound short. When a field allows only two decimal places, enter pounds and ounces instead, or keep the exact decimal in a note.

Three decimals covers most real work, since 0.001 lb is 0.45 g. The calculator keeps four decimals on pounds and two on grams, so 26 oz shows as 1.625 lb and 737.09 g, and a 40 oz shipment shows as 2.5 lb with no rounding at all.

One last habit worth stealing from shipping clerks: write the unit next to every number. "2.5" alone has started arguments; "2.5 lb (40 oz)" has ended them.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces are in a pound?

16, exactly. One pound equals 16 avoirdupois ounces, so 8 oz is 0.5 lb, 4 oz is 0.25 lb and 1 oz is 0.0625 lb.

How do I convert 26 ounces to pounds?

Divide by 16: 26 / 16 = 1.625 lb, which a scale shows as 1 lb 10 oz. In grams that is 737.09 g, or 0.7371 kg.

How many ounces is 2.5 pounds?

40 oz. Multiply pounds by 16, so 2.5 x 16 = 40, and 40 / 16 brings you back to 2.5 lb.

What is 100 oz in pounds?

6.25 lb, or 6 lb 4 oz. One hundred divided by 16 leaves 6 whole pounds and 4 ounces, which is 2834.95 g.

Does a fluid ounce weigh an ounce?

Not in general. A US fluid ounce is 29.5735 mL of volume. A fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 oz, while the same volume of honey weighs more and of oil less.

What is the difference between a troy ounce and a regular ounce?

A troy ounce is 31.1034768 g against 28.349523125 g for the avoirdupois ounce, about 9.7% heavier. Troy weight also uses 12 ounces per troy pound instead of 16.

How many grams is 1 oz?

28.349523125 g, exactly, under the 1959 international agreement. Four ounces is 113.40 g and 16 ounces is 453.59 g.

How do I convert pounds to ounces in my head?

Double four times, since doubling four times multiplies by 16. Three pounds: 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 oz. One and a half pounds: 1.5, 3, 6, 12, 24 oz.

Why does a food label say 8 oz (227 g) instead of 226.8 g?

FDA nutrition labeling rules round household measures: 1 oz of weight counts as 28 g and 1 fl oz as 30 mL. Eight rounded ounces give 8 x 28 = 227 g, close to the exact 226.80 g.

Is a pound 12 or 16 ounces?

16 in the everyday avoirdupois system. Troy weight, used for precious metals, has 12 troy ounces per troy pound, and that troy pound is lighter, at 373.24 g.

How accurate is it to round 1 oz to 28 g?

Off by 0.35 g per ounce, about 1.2%. At 100 oz the gap grows to 34.95 g, so use 28.35 g per ounce once the weight gets past a couple of pounds.

What does 0.875 lb mean on a shipping label?

It means 0.875 x 16 = 14 oz, since the decimal is sixteenths of a pound. The same package could be written as 0 lb 14 oz or 396.89 g.
