Which ton? Three units share one word

The word ton covers three different weights, and picking the wrong one shifts the answer by up to 12 percent. NIST Handbook 44, the federal reference behind US weights and measures, defines all three in its Appendix C tables of units (2026 edition).

When an American freight quote, a scrap yard or a dump scale says tons with no qualifier, it means short tons. The long ton survives in shipping and in a few commodity contracts. The tonne is the ton used everywhere else, and in international trade it is the default.

The distinction is not academic. A 40,000 pound load is 20 short tons, 17.86 long tons and 18.14 tonnes, so three invoices for one truck can show three different numbers and all of them can be right.

Pounds to short tons: divide by 2,000

The short ton is 20 hundredweights of 100 pounds, so the arithmetic is clean: tons = pounds / 2,000. Five thousand pounds is 2.5 tons. A quarter ton is 500 pounds. A pickup rated to carry 2,000 pounds holds exactly one ton of payload, and 42,000 pounds is 21 tons.

The chain runs ounce to pound to hundredweight to ton: 16 ounces in a pound, 100 pounds in a US hundredweight, 20 hundredweights in a short ton. That is where the 2,000 comes from, and it is why freight paperwork also calls it the net ton.

Work the reverse the same way: 30 tons is 60,000 pounds, and half a ton is 1,000 pounds. Because the factor is a round 2,000, many conversions come out tidy: 250 pounds is 0.125 tons and 12,500 pounds is 6.25 tons.

Scrap and recycling yards quote by the ton, then pay by the pound. At $0.06 a pound a short ton brings $120, and a 24,000 pound load is 12 short tons worth $1,440. Divide a per-ton price by 2,000 to get the per-pound price, and multiply the per-pound price by 2,000 to go back.

Long tons: the 2,240 pound ton

The long ton is 20 hundredweights of 112 pounds, the older British hundredweight, which puts it at 2,240 pounds, 12 percent heavier than the short ton. One long ton equals 1.12 short tons exactly, and one short ton is about 0.893 long tons.

Where it still turns up: ship displacement figures, coal contracts written under imperial units, and older Commonwealth mining reports. A cargo of 50 long tons weighs 50 x 2,240 = 112,000 pounds, which is 56 short tons. If a document mixes the two without saying which it means, a 2,240 pound ton read as 2,000 leaves 12 percent of the cargo unaccounted for.

Metric tonnes: divide pounds by 2,204.62

A tonne is 1,000 kilograms, and the international pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, which puts the tonne at 2,204.62 pounds. One tonne is 1.1023 short tons, so a tonne runs about 10.23 percent heavier than a short ton.

An 80,000 pound truck load converts to 36.29 tonnes for paperwork going overseas, and a 2,000 pound short ton converts to 0.90718 tonnes. Freight forwarders quote in tonnes while US scale tickets read in pounds or short tons, and the gap matters: 40 tonnes is 88,184.90 pounds, which is 8,184.90 pounds, more than four short tons, heavier than 40 short tons under the same number. The tonne also anchors the whole family: it sits 35.38 pounds under the long ton and 204.62 pounds over the short ton, which is why the three units look interchangeable on a chart and are not on an invoice.

Truck weight limits in tons

Federal law caps gross vehicle weight at 80,000 pounds on the Interstate Highway System, with 20,000 pounds on a single axle and 34,000 pounds on a tandem axle group (FHWA Commercial Vehicle Size and Weight Program). In short tons: 40 gross, 10 on a single axle, 17 on a tandem. The federal bridge formula can push the allowed gross lower depending on axle spacing.

A typical 5-axle tractor-semitrailer running at the cap might carry 12,000 pounds on the steer axle and 34,000 on each of the drive and trailer tandem groups, which adds to 80,000 pounds, exactly 40 short tons. Payload is what remains after the empty truck: an empty rig at 35,000 pounds leaves 45,000 pounds of freight, which is 22.5 short tons or about 20.41 tonnes.

Off the Interstate, states set their own limits, and scale houses enforce the rule for the road in front of them. A load that scales at 80,000 pounds can be legal in one state and over the limit after a state line, which is why dispatch software tracks tons by jurisdiction and not just by truck.

Bushels, grain and farm tons

Farms sell grain by the bushel while trucks weigh by the ton, so the bridge between them is the standard bushel weight. USDA documents set the standard weight for corn at 56 pounds per bushel and for soybeans and wheat at 60 pounds per bushel (USDA Farm Service Agency).

CropPounds per bushelBushels per short tonShort tons per 1,000 bushels
Corn5635.7128
Wheat6033.3330
Soybeans6033.3330
Oats3262.516
Barley4841.6724

So 1,000 bushels of corn weigh 56,000 pounds, which is 28 short tons, and a 25-ton load of corn holds 25 x 2,000 / 56 = 892.86 bushels. Elevator tickets print net weight in pounds and bushels both, so check which one your contract price applies to.

Doing it in your head

When a ton is not a weight

Two trade uses of the word have nothing to do with the scale. In heating and cooling, a ton of refrigeration is a cooling rate of 12,000 Btu per hour, originally the heat needed to melt a short ton of ice over 24 hours; the Department of Energy operations and maintenance guide lists 1 ton = 12,000 Btu/hour. A 3-ton air conditioner does not weigh 6,000 pounds, it moves 36,000 Btu per hour of heat.

The other is the shipping register ton, a measure of cargo volume fixed at 100 cubic feet, a name inherited from barrels of wine called tuns. So: weight tons divide by 2,000, 2,240 or 2,204.62 depending on the unit, cooling tons multiply by 12,000 Btu, and register tons measure space. Before converting, confirm the ton in front of you is the 2,000 pound one, because in the United States it usually is.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds are in a ton?

In the United States, a ton (short ton) is exactly 2,000 pounds. The British long ton is 2,240 pounds and the metric tonne is 2,204.62 pounds. NIST Handbook 44 lists all three.

How many pounds are in a metric ton?

2,204.62 pounds. A tonne is 1,000 kilograms, and the pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, so 1,000 / 0.45359237 = 2,204.62 pounds.

Which is heavier, a ton or a tonne?

The tonne. At 2,204.62 pounds it outweighs the 2,000 pound short ton by 204.62 pounds, about 10.23 percent, and it is lighter than the 2,240 pound long ton.

How many tons is 80,000 pounds?

40 short tons, which is the federal gross weight cap for trucks on the Interstate Highway System. The same 80,000 pounds is 35.7143 long tons or 36.2874 metric tonnes.

How do I convert pounds to tons without a calculator?

Divide by 2,000: cut the number in half, then move the decimal three places left. 84,000 pounds becomes 42,000, so 42 tons.

How many bushels of corn are in a ton?

About 35.71 bushels, because the standard weight for corn is 56 pounds per bushel and 2,000 / 56 = 35.71. A full 1,000 bushels of corn weigh 28 short tons.

Why is the British long ton 2,240 pounds?

It is 20 hundredweights of 112 pounds each, the older imperial hundredweight. The US short ton kept a 100 pound hundredweight, so 20 of those make 2,000 pounds.

How much can a semi truck carry in tons?

Federal law caps gross vehicle weight at 80,000 pounds, which is 40 short tons including the truck itself. Payload is what is left after the empty weight: an empty rig at 35,000 pounds leaves 45,000 pounds, or 22.5 short tons, of freight.

What is a ton of refrigeration?

A cooling rate, not a weight: 12,000 Btu per hour, the heat that melts a short ton of ice over 24 hours. A 3-ton air conditioner therefore moves 36,000 Btu per hour and weighs far less than 6,000 pounds.

How many kilograms are in a ton?

A short ton is 907.18 kilograms, a long ton is 1,016.05 kilograms, and a metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms exactly.

What is 5,000 pounds in tons?

2.5 short tons, 2.2321 long tons, or 2.268 metric tonnes, which is 2,267.96 kilograms.

Does anyone still use the long ton?

Yes, in ship displacement figures and some commodity and mining contracts that grew out of imperial trade. Everyday UK trade now uses the metric tonne.

How many pounds are in half a ton?

1,000 pounds for the short ton, 1,120 pounds for the long ton, and 1,102.31 pounds for a metric tonne.
