Speed Calculator

100 km/h is 62.14 mph, 27.778 m/s, 91.13 ft/s and 54.00 knots. Type any speed and pick its unit, and the calculator converts it to five other units, reads it as a pace per mile and per kilometer, and compares it with a second speed.

Type a speed and pick its unit. You get the same speed in five other units, the pace it implies per mile, per kilometer and per 100 meters, and a side by side against a second speed if you enter one.

Convert any speed between mph, km/h, m/s, ft/s, knots and Mach, read it as pace per mile or per kilometer, and compare two speeds side by side.

One number, six ways to say it

A speed is a distance covered in a unit of time, and every speed unit is just a different pair of distance and time. Miles per hour pairs miles with hours, meters per second pairs meters with seconds, and a knot pairs nautical miles with hours. Converting never changes the motion itself, only the labels, so the whole job is one multiplication by a fixed factor.

You typeYou pickThe calculator returns
100kilometers per hour62.14 mph, 27.778 m/s, 91.13 ft/s, 54.00 kn, Mach 0.082, pace 57.9 s per mile
3miles per hour4.83 km/h, 1.341 m/s, 2.61 kn, pace 20:00 per mile and 12:26 per kilometer
20knots23.02 mph, 37.04 km/h, 10.289 m/s, Mach 0.030

Type a number, pick the unit it is in, and the calculator fills in all five other units, reads the speed as a pace per mile, per kilometer and per 100 meters, and compares it against a second speed if you enter one. Because the factors come from definitions rather than rounded rules of thumb, the only rounding that happens anywhere is the rounding shown on screen.

The exact factors behind every conversion

Three definitions carry nearly all of the work. The NIST Guide to the SI, Appendix B.8, lists the international mile as exactly 1,609.344 meters and the foot as exactly 0.3048 meters. An hour is exactly 3,600 seconds, so one mile per hour is exactly 1,609.344 divided by 3,600, which is 0.44704 meters per second. Nothing in that chain is rounded, which is why the same factor appears in physics homework, GPS apps and speedometer calibration.

One unit equalsIn m/sIn km/hIn mphIn ft/s
1 mile per hour0.447041.60934411.466667
1 kilometer per hour0.27777810.6213710.911344
1 meter per second13.62.2369363.280840
1 foot per second0.30481.097280.6818181
1 knot0.5144441.8521.1507791.687810

Kilometers per hour is the metric native of the group: 1 km/h is 1,000 meters over 3,600 seconds, which is 0.277778 m/s, and that is where the classroom shortcut of dividing by 3.6 comes from. Feet per second shows up in ballistics, HVAC duct sizing and traffic engineering, and it is exactly 0.3048 m/s because the foot is defined that way, not measured.

Knots are about 15 percent bigger than miles per hour

The knot is the unit most often converted with a rounded factor, and that is where errors creep in. NOAA's explainer on the nautical mile and the knot gives the exact chain: the international nautical mile was set at exactly 1.852 kilometers in 1929 by the International Hydrographic Organization, the United States adopted that value in 1954, and one knot is one nautical mile per hour, about 1.15 statute miles per hour.

So a knot is about 15 percent larger than a mile per hour, not the same number with a salty name. A 20 knot boat is doing 23.02 mph on a car style speedometer, and 37.04 km/h. In the other direction, a 65 mph highway speed reads 56.48 kn. The factor 1.852 is exact, so the knot columns in the table above are exact too; the only approximation in this section is the everyday habit of calling it "about one and a quarter," which overshoots 1.150779 by more than 8 percent.

Pace is the same speed read backwards

Pace is time per distance, the reciprocal of speed. In seconds per mile it is 3,600 divided by the speed in mph, and in seconds per kilometer it is 3,600 divided by the speed in km/h. Runners, rowers and swimmers think in pace because it adds in a straight line: two miles at an even 8 mph take two times 7 minutes 30 seconds, while speeds do not add that way.

SpeedPace per milePace per kilometerPace per 100 m
3 mph20:0012:261:15
6 mph10:006:1337.3 s
8 mph7:304:4028.0 s
12 mph5:003:0618.6 s
100 km/h (62.14 mph)57.9 s36.0 s3.6 s

When a mile takes less than a minute, the calculator prints seconds with a decimal instead of a clock time, so 100 km/h shows 57.9 seconds per mile rather than 0:58, which would throw away half a second of precision. The per 100 meters row is the one swimmers use for pool intervals: a 3 mph walk is 1:15 per 100 m, and a 6 mph run is 37.3 seconds per 100 m.

Two worked conversions

Example 1: a Canadian highway speed. Type 100 and pick kilometers per hour. The calculator returns 62.14 mph, 27.778 m/s, 91.13 ft/s, 54.00 kn and Mach 0.082. The pace rows read 57.9 seconds per mile and 36.0 seconds per kilometer, and the ground covered in one minute is 1,667 m (5,468 ft). Enter 65 mph in the comparison fields and the panel reports "Slower than 65.00 miles per hour: 95.6% of its speed, behind by 2.86 mph." That 2.86 mph gap is the whole difference between a 100 km/h limit and a 65 mph limit, and it is easier to feel as a percentage than as two numbers in different units.

Example 2: a brisk walk. Type 3 and pick miles per hour. The calculator returns 4.83 km/h, 1.341 m/s, 4.40 ft/s and 2.61 kn. The pace rows read 20:00 per mile, 12:26 per kilometer and 1:15 per 100 meters, and one minute of walking covers 80 m (264 ft). Chained out, a 5 km walk at that pace takes 62 min 08 s, which is the number that decides whether you can fit the loop into a lunch break.

Mach numbers depend on the air, not on you

A Mach number is a ratio: your speed divided by the speed of sound in the air around you. NASA's Beginner's Guide to Aeronautics explains the Mach number and puts the speed of sound near 330 m/s, about 760 mph, at sea level, noting that it depends on the gas and its temperature. The calculator uses 340.3 m/s, the standard atmosphere value for 15 C at sea level, and labels the row so nobody mistakes it for an exact definition like the mile.

Worked out: 600 mph is 268.224 m/s, which is Mach 0.788 against the 340.3 m/s reference. On a cold day the sound speed drops by roughly 0.6 m/s per degree C, so the same 600 mph is a slightly higher Mach number at the same altitude. Below Mach 1 a plane is subsonic, near Mach 1 transonic, and above Mach 1 supersonic, and NASA draws those regimes from this same ratio. Treat Mach rows as reference values for sea level conditions, not as a property of the vehicle.

Where speed conversions go wrong

Rounding in the middle of a chain is the quiet one. 100 km/h is 62.1371 mph, and the screen shows 62.14, which costs a driver nothing. But multiply the rounded number by hours of travel or gallons per hour and the error compounds; carrying one extra decimal through the chain and rounding at the end keeps the answer honest.

Treadmill set in km/h, plan written in mph10 "mph" of plan becomes 6.21 mph of workoutCheck the console unit label before the workout
Marine forecast in knots, weather app in km/h25 kn is 46.3 km/h, not 25 of eitherConvert once, write it down, then compare

Physics answer in mph, formula wants m/sOff by a factor of 2.237Convert to m/s first, compute, convert back

None of these are exotic. They are one missed label, and every one of them is caught by the sanity check that 60 mph, 96.56 km/h and 26.822 m/s are the same speed.

Reading the results panel

The results panel has three blocks. The first block is the six unit rows, with the row matching your input unit echoing the value you typed. The second block is pace: per mile, per kilometer, per 100 meters, and the ground covered in one minute in both meters and feet. The third block is the comparison, which appears once both speed fields hold a number, and reports which speed is faster, the percentage, and the gap in mph.

The comparison works across units, so 100 km/h against 60 mph is fair game: the panel reports faster, 103.6% of its speed, ahead by 2.14 mph. Clear the comparison field and the block says so instead of guessing. All of the arithmetic runs in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert km/h to mph?

Multiply by 0.621371. 100 km/h is 62.14 mph, and 60 km/h is 37.28 mph.

How do I convert mph to km/h?

Multiply by 1.609344. 60 mph is 96.56 km/h and 65 mph is 104.61 km/h.

How many mph is 20 knots?

23.02 mph. One knot is 1.852 km/h or 1.150779 mph, so knots always read about 15 percent higher when converted to mph.

What is 100 km/h in m/s?

27.778 m/s. Divide km/h by 3.6, because 1 m/s is exactly 3.6 km/h.

What Mach is 600 mph?

About Mach 0.788 at sea level on a 15 C day, since 600 mph is 268.224 m/s and the calculator's reference sound speed is 340.3 m/s.

How many feet per second is 60 mph?

88 ft/s. 60 mph is 5,280 feet per minute, and dividing by 60 gives 88 feet per second.

What pace is 8 mph?

7:30 per mile, because 3,600 divided by 8 is 450 seconds. The same speed is 4:40 per kilometer.

How fast is 3 mph in km/h?

4.83 km/h. At that pace a 5 km walk takes 62 min 08 s and you cover 80 meters each minute.

Is a nautical mile longer than a land mile?

Yes. A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 meters, which is 1.150779 statute miles. NOAA notes the value was fixed in 1929 and adopted by the United States in 1954.

Why does the Mach row change with the weather?

The speed of sound depends on air temperature, falling by roughly 0.6 m/s per degree C. The calculator uses the 15 C sea level value of 340.3 m/s as a fixed reference.

How accurate are the conversions?

The factors are exact definitions from NIST SP 811, so the conversion itself is exact. The only rounding is the 2 to 3 decimals shown on screen.

Does the calculator store the speeds I enter?

No. All of the arithmetic runs in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
