Surface Area Calculator
A 12 by 8 by 10 inch box needs 592 square inches of cardboard, which is 4.11 square feet, and holds 960 cubic inches. Surface area counts every outside face in square units, so each of the three face pairs is added twice.
Pick a shape, type its dimensions and choose the unit. The calculator returns the total surface area, the lateral area, the base area and the volume. Tick open top for a box or tank without a lid.
| Total surface area | |
| Same area in square feet | |
| Same area in square meters | |
| Same area in square inches | |
| Lateral area (sides only) | |

All calculations run in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
Pick a shape, enter its dimensions and get the total surface area, the sides alone and the base, with square inches, feet and meters side by side.
Key takeaways
- Surface area is measured in square units and volume in cubic units, and the same three dimensions produce both
- Cube: 6 x a^2. Box: 2 x (LW + LH + WH). Sphere: 4 x pi x r^2. Cylinder: 2 x pi x r^2 + 2 x pi x r x h
- The curved side of a cone needs the slant height, which is the square root of r squared plus h squared
- Open containers lose exactly one face, so subtract one base rather than one side
- Area converts by the square of the length factor: 144 square inches in a square foot, not 12
- Doubling every edge multiplies the area by 4 and the volume by 8, which is the square cube law

Surface area counts the outside, volume counts the inside
Surface area is the total area of the outside of a solid, measured in square units. Volume is the space inside the same solid, measured in cubic units. A 12 by 8 by 10 inch box needs 592 square inches of cardboard to build and holds 960 cubic inches of stuff once it is built, so the two numbers come from the same three measurements but answer different questions.
The gap between them widens as a shape grows. Double every edge of a solid and each face becomes four times bigger, so the surface area goes up by a factor of 4. The volume goes up by a factor of 8, because three dimensions doubled, not two. That mismatch is the reason a large tank costs less per gallon than a small one, and the reason a big house loses less heat per square foot of floor than a cabin.
This page covers the six shapes people measure most: cube, rectangular box, sphere, cylinder, cone and square pyramid. It returns the total area, the sides alone, the base alone and the volume, and it drops one face when you tick an open top. If the question is about the space inside rather than the skin, the volume calculator takes the same measurements.
The formula for each shape, in plain terms
Every total is a sum of faces. Flat faces are simple rectangles or triangles. Curved ones get unrolled into flat shapes first, which is why pi shows up in the formulas for the round solids.
| Shape | What you measure | Total surface area |
|---|---|---|
| Cube | One edge, a | 6 x a^2, six equal squares |
| Rectangular box | Length, width, height | 2 x (L x W + L x H + W x H), three pairs of faces |
| Sphere | Radius, r | 4 x pi x r^2, one curved surface |
| Cylinder | Radius and height | 2 x pi x r^2 + 2 x pi x r x h, two ends plus the side |
| Cone | Radius, height, slant | pi x r^2 + pi x r x l, base plus the curved side |
| Square pyramid | Base edge and slant | a^2 + 2 x a x l, base plus four triangles |
The unwrapping trick explains the curved solids. A cylinder's side, cut from top to bottom and laid flat, is a rectangle whose width is the circumference 2 x pi x r and whose height is h. A cone's side unrolls into a piece of a circle with radius equal to the slant height l, and that slant is the square root of r squared plus h squared, not the height itself. Using the height in place of the slant is the most common mistake on cone problems, and it makes the answer too small.
Two more terms are worth keeping apart. Lateral area means the sides only, with no top or bottom. Total area means sides plus every base. A paint estimate for a wall uses lateral area, while a metal estimate for a closed can uses total area. The calculator shows both so the choice is yours.
Worked example: an 8 inch cube and a 12 by 8 by 10 box
An 8 inch cube has six squares of 8 by 8. Each square is 8 x 8 = 64 square inches, so the cube needs 6 x 64 = 384 square inches of material. Divide by 144 to get square feet: 384 / 144 = 2.67 square feet. The volume is 512 cubic inches, a bit over a quarter of a cubic foot.
The box takes one more step because its faces are not all alike. Length 12, width 8 and height 10 give three different faces: 12 x 8 = 96 for the top and bottom, 12 x 10 = 120 for the front and back, and 8 x 10 = 80 for the two ends. Each appears twice, so 2 x (96 + 120 + 80) = 592 square inches, which is 592 / 144 = 4.11 square feet.
| Solid | Faces | Area in square inches | Area in square feet | Volume in cubic inches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 inch cube | Six 64 square inch squares | 384 | 2.67 | 512 |
| 12 by 8 by 10 box | Two 96, two 120, two 80 | 592 | 4.11 | 960 |
| 16 inch cube | Six 256 square inch squares | 1,536 | 10.67 | 4,096 |
The third row is the same cube at double the edge, and it is there to show the pattern: the edge doubled from 8 to 16, the area went from 384 to 1,536, which is four times bigger, and the volume went from 512 to 4,096, which is eight times bigger.
Worked example: a round water tank in square feet
A cylindrical tank with a 2 foot radius and a 6 foot height has three surfaces to cover: the curved side and two flat round ends. Take them one at a time.
The side unrolls into a rectangle. Its width is the circumference, 2 x 3.14159 x 2 = 12.57 feet, and its height is 6 feet, so the side is 12.57 x 6 = 75.40 square feet. One end is 3.14159 x 2 x 2 = 12.57 square feet, and there are two of them, for 25.13 square feet. The total is 75.40 + 25.13 = 100.53 square feet.
The volume comes from the same radius and height: 3.14159 x 4 x 6 = 75.40 cubic feet. At 7.48 gallons per cubic foot that is 75.40 x 7.48 = 564.0 gallons. One gallon of exterior paint covers roughly 350 square feet, so 350 / 100.53 = 3.48 tank surfaces per gallon, which means a single gallon covers this tank about three times over.
| Part of the tank | Formula | Square feet |
|---|---|---|
| Curved side | 2 x 3.14159 x 2 x 6 | 75.40 |
| One end | 3.14159 x 2 x 2 | 12.57 |
| Both ends | 2 x 12.57 | 25.13 |
| Total, closed | 75.40 + 25.13 | 100.53 |
| Total, no lid | 75.40 + 12.57 | 87.96 |
The last row is the answer for an open top tank, and it is 12.57 square feet lighter than the closed one. Anyone ordering steel or liner for a tank should decide on the lid before ordering, because that single face is over 12 percent of the total.
Open containers, missing lids and other single face deductions
Most real containers are missing a face, and the fix is subtraction. A 24 by 16 by 12 inch storage tote closed up would need 2 x (384 + 288 + 192) = 1,728 square inches. The lid is one 24 by 16 face, or 384 square inches, so the open tote is 1,728 - 384 = 1,344 square inches, which is 1,344 / 144 = 9.33 square feet.
Round containers work the same way. A 1.5 foot radius drum that is 3 feet tall has a side of 2 x 3.14159 x 1.5 x 3 = 28.27 square feet and a base of 3.14159 x 2.25 = 7.07 square feet. Closed, the total is 28.27 + 2 x 7.07 = 42.41 square feet. Open, it is 28.27 + 7.07 = 35.34 square feet. The seven square feet of difference is one steel disc.
Three cases are easy to get wrong. A box without a lid loses one length times width face, not a side. A cylinder without a lid loses one circle, not the curved side. A pyramid never had a top face to begin with, so the open top switch changes nothing there, and a sphere has no flat face at all. The calculator prints the number of faces it counted so the assumption is visible.
Square inches, square feet and square meters
Area units need one extra step that length units do not. One foot is 12 inches, but one square foot is 12 x 12 = 144 square inches, because the conversion applies to both directions at once. Dividing square inches by 12 instead of 144 is the single most common error in these estimates, and it inflates the answer twelvefold.
| From | To | Multiply by | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square inches | Square feet | Divide by 144 | 384 / 144 = 2.67 |
| Square feet | Square yards | Divide by 9 | 100.53 / 9 = 11.17 |
| Square feet | Square meters | Multiply by 0.092903 | 100.53 x 0.092903 = 9.34 |
| Square centimeters | Square feet | Divide by 929.03 | 1,000 / 929.03 = 1.08 |
| Square meters | Square feet | Multiply by 10.7639 | 2 x 10.7639 = 21.53 |
The factors come from the official definitions of the inch, the foot and the meter. The NIST Guide for the Use of the International System of Units, SP 811 lists the exact conversion factors, and its rule is to square the linear factor when converting an area. Doing it in that order, length first and then area, keeps the arithmetic honest.
One shortcut helps in the workshop. If you measured in inches and want square feet, divide each dimension by 12 before multiplying anything. A 30 by 48 inch panel is 2.5 by 4 feet, which is 10 square feet, and that route skips the 1,440 square inch intermediate step entirely.
Why doubling every dimension multiplies the area by four
Surface area follows the square of the scale factor and volume follows the cube, which is often called the square cube law. It is not a rule of thumb, it falls straight out of the formulas: every area term multiplies two lengths, and every volume term multiplies three.
| Edge of a cube | Surface area | Volume | Area to volume ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 24 square inches | 8 cubic inches | 3.00 |
| 8 inches | 384 square inches | 512 cubic inches | 0.75 |
| 16 inches | 1,536 square inches | 4,096 cubic inches | 0.38 |
| 32 inches | 6,144 square inches | 32,768 cubic inches | 0.19 |
Read the last column: as the cube grows, it has less skin for every unit of contents. That is why a small dog needs more food per pound than a large one, why a big tank holds its heat longer, and why crushed ice melts faster than the same weight of block ice. The same arithmetic decides whether a radiator can shed the heat a machine makes.
For buying materials the pattern is practical. Doubling a box's dimensions multiplies the cardboard by four but the contents by eight, so larger boxes cost less per item shipped. Shrinking a package by half saves three quarters of the material while cutting the volume by seven eighths.
How this page differs from our wall area and volume pages
Three of our tools use area and volume words, and they answer different questions. Picking the right one saves a wrong order.
| Page | What it measures | Typical question |
|---|---|---|
| Wall area calculator | Flat wall surfaces in a room, with doors, windows and gable triangles deducted or added | How much paint for a 12 by 10 bedroom |
| Volume calculator | Cubic space inside a box, cylinder, sphere or cone, in gallons and liters | How much water fits in this tank |
| This page | Square footage of the outside skin of a closed or open solid, plus lateral and base splits | How much sheet metal to build the tank |
The room case needs its own tool because a room is a hollow box with holes punched in it, and the deduction rules for doors and windows matter more than the shape formulas. The volume case needs its own tool because gallons and liters are what people buy. This page sits in between: it is for the material that wraps a solid object, whether that object is a shipping carton, a tank, a cone of yarn or a pyramid roof.
For round shapes, the Wolfram MathWorld entry on the sphere lists the same 4 x pi x r^2 result with the derivation, and the cylinder entry covers the unrolled side. Both are useful when you want to see where the formula came from rather than just use it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between surface area and volume?
Surface area is the outside skin in square units and volume is the inside space in cubic units. A 12 by 8 by 10 inch box has 592 square inches of cardboard and 960 cubic inches of room.
How do I find the surface area of a cube?
Multiply one edge by itself and then by six. An 8 inch cube gives 8 x 8 = 64 square inches per face, and 6 x 64 = 384 square inches in total, or 2.67 square feet.
What is the surface area of a cylinder?
Two circles plus the unrolled side: 2 x pi x r^2 + 2 x pi x r x h. A tank with a 2 foot radius and 6 foot height comes to 100.53 square feet.
Why is the surface area of a sphere 4 pi r squared?
A sphere's curved surface covers the same area as four circles of its own radius. The MathWorld derivation starts from a revolving semicircle, and the result has been standard since Archimedes.
Do I use the height or the slant height for a cone?
Use the slant height. A cone with a 3 foot radius and 4 foot height has a slant of 5 feet, so the curved side is 3.14159 x 3 x 5 = 47.12 square feet, not the 37.70 you get from the height.
How many square inches are in a square foot?
144. One foot is 12 inches, and an area conversion squares that factor, so 12 x 12 = 144. A 384 square inch panel is 384 / 144 = 2.67 square feet.
How do I subtract an open top from a box?
Remove one length times width face. A closed 24 by 16 by 12 inch tote needs 1,728 square inches, and without the lid it needs 1,728 - 384 = 1,344 square inches.
How much paint does a tank need?
Divide the area by the coverage printed on the can. At 350 square feet per gallon, a 100.53 square foot tank takes 100.53 / 350 = 0.29 gallons, so a quart covers it.
Does doubling the size of a box double the cardboard?
No, it quadruples it. The area goes up by the square of the scale factor while the volume goes up by the cube, so a box twice as wide uses four times the material and holds eight times as much.
What is lateral area?
Lateral area counts the sides only, with no top or bottom. A cylinder with a 2 foot radius and 6 foot height has 75.40 square feet of side but 100.53 square feet in total.
Can I use this for a pyramid roof?
Yes, for a square based pyramid. With a 6 foot base edge and 4 foot height the slant is 5 feet, so the four triangles add 2 x 6 x 5 = 60 square feet to the 36 square foot base.
Why does my number differ from the paint store's?
Coverage rates assume a smooth surface and one coat. Rough masonry can soak up 20 to 30 percent more, so add a margin and buy in the next size up rather than the exact figure.
How do I convert square feet to square meters?
Multiply by 0.092903. A 100.53 square foot tank is 100.53 x 0.092903 = 9.34 square meters. Going the other way, multiply square meters by 10.7639.
What is the surface area of a basketball?
A regulation ball is about 9.5 inches across, so the radius is 4.75 inches. The area is 4 x 3.14159 x 22.5625 = 283.53 square inches, or 1.97 square feet of leather.
