Tons to Pounds Converter
One short ton is 2,000 pounds, a long ton is 2,240 pounds, and a metric tonne is 2,204.62 pounds. Multiply your tons by the factor that matches the unit on the paper. Three short tons weigh 6,000 pounds, five long tons weigh 11,200, and ten metric tonnes weigh 22,046.23.

Three tons, three different pound counts
The word ton carries three different weights, and the gap between them is big enough to matter on any invoice. The short ton, the everyday American ton, is 2,000 pounds. The long ton, the old British unit that still shows up in shipping, is 2,240 pounds. The metric tonne, spelled that way to keep it apart from the other two, is 2,204.62 pounds, the pound count of exactly 1,000 kilograms.
So the honest answer to "how many pounds are in a ton" starts with another question: which ton does the document mean? A truck loaded to 3 tons carries 6,000 pounds if those tons are short ones, 6,720 if they are long tons, and 6,613.87 if they are metric tonnes. None of the three readings is wrong. They are three units wearing one word.
| Unit | Pounds | Kilograms | Where it turns up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short ton (tn) | 2,000 (exact) | 907.18 | US trucking, quarries, farms, scrap yards |
| Long ton | 2,240 (exact) | 1,016.05 | British tradition, ship displacement, gross ton scrap prices |
| Metric tonne (t) | 2,204.62 | 1,000 (exact) | World trade, containers, most freight paperwork |
NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C, the rulebook American commercial scales are built around, prints all three: the short ton at 2,000 pounds and the long ton at 2,240, both exact, and the metric ton at 2,204.623 pounds. The table above rounds the last one to two decimals.
Short tons to pounds: multiply by 2,000
Short tons to pounds is a multiplication by 2,000. Pounds back to short tons is a division by 2,000. The factor is exact, because NIST defines the short ton as 2,000 avoirdupois pounds with no rounding anywhere in the definition.
The mental math is friendly: multiply the ton count by 2, then hang three zeros on it. Four tons is 8,000 pounds. A quarter ton is 500 pounds, which is why the phrase half ton truck survives. That label describes an old payload rating of about 1,000 pounds, not what a modern truck of that size can carry.
Real loads land in this range all day. A skid steer bucket of gravel runs about 1 short ton, 2,000 pounds. A tandem axle dump truck hauls 12 to 15 short tons, so 24,000 to 30,000 pounds of stone. The federal gross weight limit for a semi on US highways is 80,000 pounds, which is 40 short tons counting tractor, trailer, fuel, driver and freight together.
The one place the 2,000 factor gets abused is the phrase "a ton of" in casual speech, where it means "a lot" and nothing more. In trade, on a scale ticket, on a bill of lading, it means 2,000 pounds unless the paper says otherwise.
Long tons to pounds: multiply by 2,240
The long ton multiplies by 2,240. It is built from the old British hundredweight of 112 pounds: 20 hundredweights of 112 pounds make 2,240. That odd number explains the name gross ton, which some US scrap yards still print on their price boards.
Shipping is where the long ton lived. Ship displacement, the weight of the vessel and everything aboard, was quoted in long tons for a century, and naval records still use it. A small coastal freighter that displaces 3,000 long tons displaces 6,720,000 pounds. Deadweight capacity, the cargo a hull can carry, moved to metric tonnes in modern documents, but older plans and older reference books stay with 2,240.
Two tricks make this ton manageable. First, it is 12 percent heavier than a short ton, so short ton math plus 12 percent lands close: 5 long tons is about 5.6 short tons. Second, 1 long ton is exactly 1.12 short tons, so 5 long tons is 11,200 pounds, and 10 long tons is 22,400 pounds.
If a quote says gross ton and the number looks high per unit, this is why. The seller is quoting a 2,240 pound unit, and the price per pound is lower than it appears.
Metric tonnes to pounds: the 2,204.62 factor
One metric tonne is exactly 1,000 kilograms. The BIPM SI Brochure holds the kilogram definition, and the 1959 international yard and pound agreement fixes the pound at 0.45359237 kilogram, exactly. Divide 1,000 by that and the tonne comes out to 2,204.6226 pounds. NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C prints the same factor rounded to 2,204.623.
Mental math: double the tonne count, then add 10 percent of the result. For 8 tonnes, 16,000 plus 1,600 is 17,600, and the exact figure is 17,636.98, close enough for a guess and 0.2 percent light. For paperwork, use 2,204.62 and keep two decimals.
The gap to the short ton is the one that costs money. A tonne is 204.62 pounds heavier, about 10.2 percent more than the short ton. Buy 20 tonnes of anything priced per ton, assume short tons by mistake, and your quantity is off by 4,092 pounds, a full pickup load and then some. Run it the other way and 20 short tons is 40,000 pounds but only 18.14 tonnes, which is the same error pointing at your supplier.
Which ton is on the quote in front of you?
Most conversion mistakes on this page come from quoting, not from arithmetic. The fix is reading the paper the way the seller wrote it, then picking the factor to match.
- Gravel, sand and topsoil. US quarries sell by the short ton. A scale ticket weighs the truck, 24,000 pounds for a 12 ton load, and the price multiplies short tons. Ask for the ticket weight in pounds if you want to check the ton count yourself.
- Scrap metal. Ask whether the price is per net ton or per gross ton. Net means 2,000 pounds, gross means 2,240. A gross ton price of $190 pays the same as a net ton price of $212.80, since 190 x 2,240 / 2,000 = 212.80. Same money, different numbers on the board.
- Ocean freight. Container weight limits and most modern bills of lading use kilograms or metric tonnes. A booking of 21 tonnes is 46,297 pounds, not 42,000, and a forklift rated 40,000 pounds cannot touch it.
- Government figures. US crop reports, coal output and road salt contracts are short tons unless the agency says otherwise. The same word in a European trade statistic means metric tonnes.
| What the paper says | Which ton | Pounds per ton |
|---|---|---|
| ton, net ton, short ton, tn | Short | 2,000 |
| gross ton, long ton | Long | 2,240 |
| tonne, metric ton, t, MT | Metric | 2,204.62 |
When a document just says ton with no qualifier, US domestic trade means short, and anything crossing an ocean probably means metric. One question at the counter is cheaper than a 10 percent quantity error discovered at delivery.
Tons to pounds chart
The chart covers counts that come up in freight, construction and scrap. The short ton and long ton columns are exact by definition; the metric column carries two decimals because 2,204.6226 does not stop.
| Tons | If short (2,000) | If long (2,240) | If metric (2,204.62) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2,000 | 2,240 | 2,204.62 |
| 2 | 4,000 | 4,480 | 4,409.25 |
| 3 | 6,000 | 6,720 | 6,613.87 |
| 5 | 10,000 | 11,200 | 11,023.11 |
| 10 | 20,000 | 22,400 | 22,046.23 |
| 15 | 30,000 | 33,600 | 33,069.34 |
| 20 | 40,000 | 44,800 | 44,092.45 |
| 40 | 80,000 | 89,600 | 88,184.90 |
| 100 | 200,000 | 224,000 | 220,462.26 |
Read the chart backwards and it works just as well: any pound figure divided by 2,000, 2,240 or 2,204.62 returns the matching ton count. That is the check to run when a supplier's invoice and your own ticket disagree by a few percent, since the shortfall is often a ton definition and not a missing pallet.
Worked examples: gravel, scrap and a container
Three quotes from one working week show where the choice of factor lands.
- Driveway gravel. The quarry sells 12 short tons at $28 per ton. That is 24,000 pounds delivered, and 12 x 28 = $336 on the invoice. If the same 12 were metric tonnes, the load would be 26,455 pounds, 2,455 pounds more stone for the same count.
- Scrap steel. The yard scale reads 8,400 pounds. At $190 per net ton that is 8,400 / 2,000 x 190 = $798. If the board pays per gross ton instead, 8,400 / 2,240 = 3.75 gross tons, and 3.75 x 190 = $712.50. Check which column your ticket sits in before arguing about the rate.
- Imported machinery. The booking says 21 tonnes, which is 21 x 2,204.62 = 46,297 pounds. The dock forklift is rated 40,000 pounds, so the crate needs the bigger lift. The word ton alone never told you that.
| What it is | Count as written | Pounds |
|---|---|---|
| Tandem dump of gravel | 14 short tons | 28,000 |
| Semi at the federal limit | 40 short tons | 80,000 |
| Small freighter displacement | 3,000 long tons | 6,720,000 |
| Crate on a 40 ft container booking | 21 metric tonnes | 46,297 |
| Pallet of bagged concrete, 40 bags | 2,400 lb | 1.2 short tons |
Notice the last row: a weight in pounds converts to a ton count with a division, and that direction is just as common. Most scale tickets print pounds, and most prices are quoted per ton, so the division is the step that turns a ticket into an invoice line.
Where the three factors come from
All three factors are settled definitions rather than measurements with error bars. The short ton and the long ton come from the hundredweight system written into English law centuries ago, and NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C carries them forward as exact: 2,000 and 2,240 pounds. The tonne is a metric unit of exactly 1,000 kilograms, defined through the kilogram that the BIPM SI Brochure maintains, and the pound it converts through is exact too: 0.45359237 kilogram under the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, restated in NIST SP 811 and in the Federal Register notice that published it.
Exact factors still do not create precision. A scale ticket reading 24,312 pounds converts cleanly to 12.156 short tons, 10.854 long tons and 11.028 tonnes. A guess of "about 12 tons" supports 24,000 pounds and nothing finer, so the answer should be rounded to match the input. Writing 24,000.00 pounds from an estimated 12 tons invents four digits nobody measured.
One boundary closes the topic. The ton also appears as a unit of cooling capacity, the ton of refrigeration, and as a unit of ship volume, the register ton. Neither one weighs 2,000 pounds of anything, and neither converts with the factors on this page. When the number describes capacity or volume instead of mass, put the 2,000 aside.
Frequently asked questions
How many pounds are in a short ton?
Exactly 2,000. NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C defines the short ton as 2,000 avoirdupois pounds, and every US truck scale, quarry ticket and grain elevator follows that figure.
How many pounds are in a long ton?
Exactly 2,240. It is 20 British hundredweights of 112 pounds each, a unit that survives in ship displacement figures and in gross ton prices at some US scrap yards.
How many pounds is a metric tonne?
2,204.6226 pounds. A tonne is exactly 1,000 kilograms and the pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilogram, so the factor is fixed by definition rather than rounded to a convenient number.
How many pounds is 3 tons?
6,000 pounds if the tons are short, 6,720 if they are long, and 6,613.87 if they are metric tonnes. One sentence, three answers, which is why the unit on the quote matters more than the number.
What is the difference between a ton and a tonne?
204.62 pounds. The metric tonne is about 10.2 percent heavier than the short ton, and 35.38 pounds lighter than the long ton. The extra e in the spelling is the only warning you get.
Which ton do gravel and sand prices use?
The short ton, in the United States. Quarries weigh trucks on certified scales and price in 2,000 pound tons unless the ticket says otherwise, so a 12 ton load is 24,000 pounds.
What is a gross ton at a scrap yard?
The long ton of 2,240 pounds. A $190 gross ton price equals $212.80 per net ton, so convert both quotes to the same base before deciding which yard pays more.
How many tons is an 80,000 pound semi truck?
40 short tons at the federal highway gross limit. That count includes tractor, trailer, fuel and driver, so the freight itself is usually 20 to 25 short tons.
How many kilograms is a short ton?
907.18474 kilograms. Multiply 2,000 pounds by 0.45359237, or use the rough figure of 907 kilograms when a metric scale is all you have.
How do I convert tons to pounds in my head?
Short tons: double the count and add three zeros. Metric tonnes: double it, then add 10 percent. Long tons: short ton math plus 12 percent, since 2,240 is 12 percent above 2,000.
Do shipping documents still use long tons?
Rarely. Modern bills of lading quote kilograms or metric tonnes, and 21 tonnes means 46,297 pounds. Long tons survive in older ship records, naval histories and displacement figures.
What is a deadweight ton?
A capacity measure for ships, the weight a vessel can carry in cargo, fuel and stores. Modern deadweight is quoted in metric tonnes, while older tonnage lists used long tons of 2,240 pounds.
Is a US ton the same as a British ton?
No. The US ton of trade is 2,000 pounds and the traditional British ton is 2,240. Both countries now quote metric tonnes in international trade, so the old split mostly shows up in legacy documents.
What is 1.5 tons in pounds?
3,000 pounds for short tons, 3,360 for long tons and 3,306.93 for metric tonnes. One and a half short tons is a full size pickup payload with a little room left over.
