Yards to Inches Converter
One yard is 36 inches, exact by definition. Multiply yards by 36 to get inches: a quarter yard is 9 inches, half a yard is 18, and 2.5 yards is 90. Divide inches by 36 to run it backwards, so 54 inches is 1.5 yards.

Type yards for inches, or inches for yards. The converter handles whole yards and the eighth yard fractions that fabric counters and flooring crews cut every day.
Key takeaways
- 1 yard = 36 inches, exact since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement
- inches = yards x 36, so 2.5 yards is 90 inches and 5 yards is 180
- 1/8 yard = 4.5 in, 1/4 yard = 9 in, 1/2 yard = 18 in, 3/4 yard = 27 in
- A yard of fabric means 36 inches of length; the width is a separate number, often 44, 54 or 60 inches
- One square yard is 1,296 square inches, the figure behind carpet and sod quotes

Buy by the yard, cut by the inch
Fabric, ribbon, rope and carpet all get sold by the yard, and every one of them gets cut by the inch. The bridge between the two is a fixed number: 1 yard = 36 inches, exact by definition, with no rounding anywhere in it. Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement set the yard at exactly 0.9144 meter, recorded in the Federal Register notice of July 1, 1959 and carried in NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C, the 36 count has been exact as well.
Working in both units at once is the daily reality of a sewing room or a flooring install. The fabric counter quotes 3.5 yards. The pattern piece measures 42 inches. Both describe the same length, because 3.5 x 36 = 126 inches, and the person holding the shears needs the inch figure before anything gets cut.
The reverse matters too. A remnant bin labels a piece 54 inches, and 54 / 36 = 1.5 yards. Order by the yard, plan in inches, and this one multiplication and one division cover the whole conversation between the price list and the cutting table.
Yards to inches: multiply by 36
The formula is inches = yards x 36. Run it backwards and yards = inches / 36. Nothing else enters the math: no fudge factors, no unit quirks, no weather.
Mental shortcuts keep it fast. Multiply by 40 and subtract a tenth of that, which is the same as times 40 minus times 4. Five yards: 200 minus 20 is 180 inches, and 5 x 36 confirms it. Or go through feet, the way the old hands do it: yards x 3 gives feet, feet x 12 gives inches, and 3 x 12 is the same 36.
Decimals of a yard land on clean half inches, which is why pattern books speak in eighths. One tenth of a yard is 3.6 inches, a mark nobody wants to chase on a tape. One eighth is 4.5 inches, sitting right on the half inch line. Keep yard quantities in eighths and every inch answer stays measurable. A bolt of quilting cotton that runs 12 yards holds 432 inches of length, and half of it, 216 inches, is exactly 6 yards.
Fabric cuts: what each fraction of a yard measures
Quilting cotton, upholstery yardage and apparel fabric are all sold in fractions of a yard, and the counter cuts them with an inch rule. The eighth is the standard step, and every eighth lands on a half inch:
| Cut of the yard | Decimal yards | Inches |
|---|---|---|
| 1/8 yard | 0.125 | 4.5 in |
| 1/4 yard | 0.25 | 9 in |
| 3/8 yard | 0.375 | 13.5 in |
| 1/2 yard | 0.5 | 18 in |
| 5/8 yard | 0.625 | 22.5 in |
| 3/4 yard | 0.75 | 27 in |
| 7/8 yard | 0.875 | 31.5 in |
| 1 yard | 1 | 36 in |
Two notes from the cutting counter. A fat quarter is not a quarter yard of length: it is a half yard of length cut in half across the width, which gives roughly 18 by 22 inches on 44 inch goods instead of a skinny 9 by 44 strip. And a quarter yard of lining means 9 inches of length no matter how wide the bolt is, because the width is a separate number, usually 44, 54 or 60 inches on the label.
Carpet and flooring: square yards quoted, inches cut
Flooring mixes the units the other way around. Carpet is priced by the square yard, yet the installer measures the room and cuts the roll in inches. One square yard is 36 by 36 inches, 1,296 square inches, and a room of 180 square feet works out to 20 square yards of area.
The cut plan still lives in inches. A hallway 40 inches wide takes a runner cut 40 inches across by however many yards long: 5 yards of length is 180 inches of carpet off the roll. Because the roll itself is 12 feet, or 144 inches, wide, the installer multiplies the yard quote by 36 to see the length coming off the shelf, then trims to the room's inch measurements with a straight edge.
Vinyl sheet flooring and artificial turf follow the same pattern. Sod is priced by the square yard in some states and by the square foot in others, but every roll gets cut in inches on site. The one conversion that matters stays the same: yards x 36, and the tape measure takes it from there.
Yards to inches chart
The chart lists the counts that show up at fabric counters, flooring jobs and drafting tables. Every inch figure is exact, since 36 does not allow for rounding.
| Yards | Inches | What it matches |
|---|---|---|
| 0.25 | 9 | Quarter yard cut |
| 0.5 | 18 | Half yard cut, or a deep binding strip |
| 0.75 | 27 | Three quarter yard cut |
| 1 | 36 | One yard of fabric, measured along the selvedge |
| 1.5 | 54 | Seat fabric for a small bench |
| 2 | 72 | A pair of short curtain panels |
| 2.5 | 90 | Table runner for a six foot table |
| 3 | 108 | A common drapery order |
| 5 | 180 | Hallway runner of 5 yards |
| 12 | 432 | A full bolt of quilting cotton |
Read it backwards the same way: any inch figure divided by 36 gives the yard count, and the fractional yard counts come out in eighths whenever the inches are a multiple of 4.5.
Blueprint scales and tape measure fractions
Drawings bring the two units together at another scale. An architectural plan marked 1:36 means 1 inch on paper equals 36 inches, a full yard, on site. The common quarter inch scale, 1/4 inch to the foot, runs 1:48, so a wall drawn 3 inches long is 12 feet, 48 x 3 = 144 inches, or 4 yards of baseboard. Checking a drawing against yard quantities is one division by 36 once the paper inches are known.
On the tape itself, inches divide into sixteenths, and yard thinking comes down to three landmarks: 18 inches is the half yard mark, 27 is the three quarter mark, 36 is the full yard. Digital tapes can show yards as a unit, but the printed blade never does, so the x 36 step stays mental.
Fraction discipline pays here. The eighths of a yard sit 4.5 inches apart, each one exactly between two inch marks on the half inch line. When a plan calls for 2 3/8 yards, convert once and be done: 2.375 x 36 = 85.5 inches, one clean mark at 85 and a half, no repeated arithmetic at each cut.
Worked examples: curtains, a bench and a runner
Three projects show the yard and the inch trading places in a single job.
- Curtain panels. The pattern calls for 63 inch drops and you make two panels. That is 126 inches of length, and 126 / 36 = 3.5 yards to order before hems and pattern repeats. The yardage label and the cutting plan only agree through the 36.
- Bench cushion. A seat 48 inches long and 18 inches deep. One yard of 54 inch fabric gives 36 inches of length, 12 inches short of wrapping the seat. A yard and a half gives 54 inches of length, enough for the seat plus the wrap on both ends.
- Stair runner. Thirteen steps at an 8 inch riser and a 10 inch tread need 18 inches per step: 13 x 18 = 234 inches, and 234 / 36 = 6.5 yards. The order goes in yards; every cut on the stairs is an inch measurement.
| Project | Inches needed | Yards to order |
|---|---|---|
| Two 63 inch curtain panels | 126 | 3.5 |
| Bench cushion, 48 inch seat | 54 | 1.5 |
| Stair runner, 13 steps | 234 | 6.5 |
| Table runner, 72 inch table | 90 | 2.5 |
| Four pillow covers, 18 inch squares | 36 | 1 |
The pillow row assumes 45 inch fabric: two 18 inch squares fit across the width, so one 36 inch length yields all four covers. On 54 inch goods the same order still needs just one yard, because the width, not the length, is doing the work.
Cutting mistakes that cost real fabric
- Reading the width as the length. A yard of 54 inch fabric is 36 inches along the selvedge and 54 inches across. Ordering 2 yards to cover a 72 inch run works only along the length; across, those same 2 yards are 108 inches.
- Rounding the yardage before cutting. 2.4 yards is 86.4 inches. Cut at 86 and the piece comes up half an inch short. Convert first, round at the cutting line, and never before it.
- Mixing square yards with linear yards. 20 square yards of carpet is an area, 25,920 square inches. It says nothing about a cut length until the room width is known, because the same area can be 180 inches long or 400.
- Trusting 35 or 40. Estimating a yard as 35 inches loses an inch per yard. A 6 yard order measured that way comes up 6 inches short, one full pattern repeat on many prints, and the match across the seam is gone.
One habit prevents all four: write the inch figure next to the yard figure on the order, every time. The two numbers travel together through the whole project, and the 36 between them is the only constant in the room.
Frequently asked questions
How many inches are in a yard?
Exactly 36. The yard is 3 feet of 12 inches each, and since the 1959 international agreement it is also exactly 0.9144 meter, so the 36 count is a definition rather than a rounded figure.
How many inches is 2.5 yards?
90 inches. Multiply 2.5 by 36. That is the fabric length for a table runner on a six foot table with a hanging overhang at each end.
How many inches is a quarter yard?
9 inches. An eighth of a yard is 4.5, a half is 18, and three quarters is 27, so every eighth of a yard lands on a half inch mark of an ordinary tape.
How many inches is half a yard?
18 inches, exactly half of 36. The 18 inch line is the half yard landmark most cutting tables and quilters work from.
How do I convert yards to inches without a calculator?
Multiply by 40, then subtract a tenth of the result, which is the same as times 40 minus times 4. For 7 yards: 280 minus 28 is 252 inches, and 7 x 36 confirms it.
What is 54 inches in yards?
1.5 yards. Divide 54 by 36. It is also the width of most home decor fabric, a coincidence that has confused more than a few fabric orders.
How many square inches are in a square yard?
1,296. One square yard is 36 by 36 inches, so the area is 36 x 36 = 1,296 square inches, the number carpet and sod quotes rest on.
How many inches is 3 yards?
108 inches. Three yards of fabric is 108 inches of length, which is also three 36 inch repeats laid end to end, a common drapery order.
Why is a yard 36 inches?
The yard predates the modern inch and came down through English measures of arm spans and rods. Since the 1959 agreement both units hang from the meter: 0.9144 meter divided by 0.0254 meter per inch is exactly 36.
How many yards is a 63 inch curtain panel?
1.75 yards. Divide 63 by 36, and two panels take 3.5 yards of length before any hem or pattern repeat allowance is added.
Does a yard of fabric mean 36 inches at any width?
The yard always means 36 inches of length along the selvedge. The width is a separate figure on the label, usually 44, 54 or 60 inches, and it never changes the length you receive.
How many inches is 5/8 of a yard?
22.5 inches. Multiply 0.625 by 36. Fat quarter math starts from the half yard, 18 inches, and quarters of that give the same 4.5 inch steps.
How wide is a roll of carpet in inches?
Most residential carpet comes 12 feet wide, which is 144 inches or 4 yards across. The length is cut to order in feet and inches, and the price comes from the square yard figure.
What drawing scale means 1 inch equals 1 yard?
1:36. One inch on paper is 36 inches on site. The quarter inch architect scale is 1:48, one inch to 4 feet, so the two scales are not interchangeable on a plan.
