What Cash App charges and what it does not

Cash App has two different fee structures, and most of the confusion comes from mixing them up. Sending money to a friend from your Cash App balance or a linked bank account is free. Accepting a payment as a business is not free, and moving money out fast costs extra.

As of October 17, 2026, the published US rates are: free for personal sends and standard transfers, 2.6% plus $0.15 on a business payment from another Cash App account, 3% on Tap to Pay card payments, 3% when you fund a personal send with a credit card, and 0.5% to 2.5% for an instant transfer with a $0.25 minimum and a $75 maximum.

Those figures come from Cash App's own help pages, the business fee page and the withdrawal speed page. The app shows the exact fee on the confirmation screen before you approve a payment, and that number is the one that applies if the published rate and the screen disagree.

The calculator on this page uses the same three inputs the app uses: the amount, the type of payment, and for instant transfers the rate tier. Nothing else changes the fee.

Personal transfers are free

Sending money to another person from your Cash App balance or a linked bank account costs nothing, and receiving it costs nothing either. A $200 send to a friend leaves you $200 short and leaves them $200 richer, with no fee on either side.

The standard transfer out of your balance is also free. It takes one to three business days to reach a linked bank account, and Cash App does not charge for the wait. If you can plan two days ahead, this is the cheapest way to get money out of the app.

Two personal cases do carry a fee. Funding a send with a credit card adds 3%, so a $100 send from a credit card costs $103. Depositing paper money at a retail partner costs $1 per deposit. Neither is a fee on the transfer itself, which is why they surprise people who thought everything personal was free.

There is also a limit on how much you can send, which depends on your account history and verification level. The limit is not a fee, but it is the other reason a large personal transfer can fail.

Business payments: 2.6% plus 15 cents

A Cash App Business account pays 2.6% plus $0.15 on each payment received from a customer's Cash App account. The fee comes out of the amount before it reaches your balance, so you never see the gross figure sit in the account.

On a $100 sale the fee is 2.60 + 0.15 = $2.75, and $97.25 lands in your balance. On a $20 sale the fee is 0.52 + 0.15 = $0.67, which is 3.35% of the sale, because the flat 15 cents weighs more on a small ticket. On a $500 sale the fee is 13.00 + 0.15 = $13.15, which is 2.63%.

That flat component is the part to watch. At $5 the fee is 0.13 + 0.15 = $0.28, or 5.6% of the sale. At $1,000 it is 26.00 + 0.15 = $26.15, or 2.62%. The percentage approaches 2.6% as the ticket grows, and the small sales are where a business feels it.

Business accounts are free to open and need no card reader for a Cash App to Cash App payment. There is no monthly fee and no minimum volume, which is why the rate is competitive for a side business that takes a few payments a week.

Tap to Pay and card payments: 3%

When a customer pays with a credit or debit card through Tap to Pay on your phone, the fee is 3% of the amount with no flat component. A $100 card payment costs $3.00, and a $20 card payment costs $0.60.

Small tickets flip the ranking because of the flat 15 cents. At $10, the business payment fee is 0.26 + 0.15 = $0.41, while the 3% card fee is $0.30. At $50, the business fee is $1.45 and the card fee is $1.50, so the two are almost identical.

The exact crossover is $37.50. Solve 0.026x + 0.15 = 0.03x and x = 37.50, so a $37.50 sale costs the same either way. Below that the card rate is cheaper, and above it the Cash App to Cash App rate is cheaper.

Card payments also carry chargeback risk that Cash App to Cash App payments do not. A disputed card payment can be reversed weeks later, and the fee is not returned. For a business selling to strangers, that risk belongs in the pricing along with the 3%.

Instant transfers cost extra

An instant transfer moves money from your Cash App balance to a linked debit card in minutes. Cash App charges a percentage for the speed, with a minimum and a maximum, and the exact percentage is shown on the confirmation screen.

The published range as of October 17, 2026 is 0.5% to 2.5%, with a minimum of $0.25 and a maximum of $75. On $100 at 1.75% the fee is $1.75. On $1,000 at 1.75% it is $17.50. On $10 at 1.75% the percentage works out to 17.5 cents, so the $0.25 minimum applies and the fee is a quarter.

The cap matters on large transfers. At 2.5%, a $5,000 transfer would cost $125, but the maximum is $75, so the fee stops there. The same $75 cap applies at $10,000, where 2.5% would be $250. Past $3,000 at the top rate, every extra dollar moves for free.

TransferFee at 1.75%Fee at 2.5%What limits it
$10$0.25$0.25$0.25 minimum
$100$1.75$2.50percentage only
$1,000$17.50$25.00percentage only
$3,000$52.50$75.00cap reached at 2.5%
$10,000$75.00$75.00$75 maximum

The standard transfer is the alternative and it costs nothing. The trade is time: one to three business days against minutes. For a $50 transfer the instant fee is under a dollar, and for a $2,000 transfer it can be $35 or more, which is real money for a day of waiting.

Worked example: a $100 sale and a $1,000 transfer

Put the two common cases side by side. A business takes a $100 payment from a customer who pays from their Cash App account: 0.026 x 100 = 2.60, and 2.60 + 0.15 = $2.75, so the balance grows by $97.25 and the effective rate is 2.75%.

The same $100 taken through Tap to Pay: 0.03 x 100 = $3.00, and the balance grows by $97.00. The difference is 25 cents on a single sale, which is $250 over a thousand sales.

Now the owner moves $1,000 to a debit card instantly at 1.75%: 0.0175 x 1,000 = $17.50, and $982.50 arrives. Waiting for the standard transfer would keep the full $1,000 and cost three days.

And a small instant transfer: $10 at 1.75% is 0.175, below the $0.25 minimum, so the fee is $0.25 and $9.75 arrives. The effective rate on that transfer is 2.5%, which is the price of the minimum.

Each of those numbers is what the calculator returns when you enter the same amount and pick the same mode.

The fee table

The table collects the published US rates in one place. Percentages are of the amount sent or received, and the flat amounts are per transaction. All figures were checked on October 17, 2026.

Two rows are easy to misread. The instant transfer range is set per transfer by Cash App, not chosen by the user, so the calculator lets you test each tier rather than claiming one rate. The business fee has no maximum, which means a $10,000 payment costs $260.15.

Reading the table against a bank account: a business that takes 50 payments of $40 a month pays 50 x (1.04 + 0.15) = $59.50 in fees, or 2.98% of $2,000 in sales. A card processor at 2.9% plus 30 cents would charge 50 x (1.16 + 0.30) = $73.00. The gap is $13.50 a month, which is the kind of number that decides where a small seller points customers.

Why these numbers can change

Payment fees are set by the company, not by law, and they move. Cash App changed its instant transfer range and its business pricing more than once in the last few years, and the business rate on this page differs from the 2.75% that older articles still quote. Treat any figure here as a snapshot dated October 17, 2026.

The authoritative source is always the app. Before you approve a payment, Cash App shows the fee on the confirmation screen, and that is the amount that will be deducted. The help pages linked above are the published schedule behind that screen.

For a business, the fee is also a tax deduction as a processing expense, which lowers the real cost by your marginal tax rate. A sole proprietor in the 22% bracket who pays $600 a year in processing fees saves about $132 in federal income tax, though state rules and self-employment tax treatment vary.

One safety note that has nothing to do with fees: payment apps are a common target for scams, and a request to send money back to "unlock" a payment is always a fraud. The FTC guide to avoiding scams covers the patterns, and Cash App will never ask for a fee to release a payment.
