Selling online looks profitable until the fees land. Every platform takes its cut in a different way, and the money that reaches your bank is often far less than the price on the listing. These calculators work out the real number before you set a price, so you are not guessing at a margin that turns out to be a loss.

Where the money goes

Most marketplaces charge a percentage of the total sale, including shipping, plus a small flat fee per order. A typical eBay sale of a $75 item with $8 shipping is an $83 total, and the 13.6% final value fee is $11.29, plus $0.40 per order, so $11.69 comes out. If the item cost you $25 and shipping cost $7, your profit is $39.31, a margin of 47.4%. The same percentage on a $500 laptop takes a much bigger bite in dollars.

The common mistake is pricing from the list price instead of the payout. Run the sale through the calculator first, then decide whether the profit is worth the work.
