Weeks Calculator
January 1 to October 22, 2026 spans 294 days, which is 42 weeks to the day. A Gregorian year averages 365.2425 days, so it runs 52.1775 weeks, and an ISO year holds 53 weeks when January 1 falls on a Thursday, as it does in 2026.

Dates are compared as whole calendar days in UTC, so daylight saving never shifts the count. ISO weeks run Monday to Sunday. All calculations run in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
Count the weeks between two dates, add or subtract weeks from a date, and check how many ISO weeks a year holds, with days and months alongside.
Key takeaways
- Divide the day count by 7: 294 days is 42 weeks, and any leftover days stay leftover
- A common year is 52 weeks plus 1 day, which is why the same date moves one weekday each year
- 2026 runs 53 ISO weeks because January 1 is a Thursday, while 2027 runs 52
- Adding weeks never moves the weekday: 12 weeks after January 1, 2026 is March 26, 2026, also a Thursday
- One month averages 4.35 weeks, so 12 weeks is about 2.76 months, not 3

Weeks between two dates: divide the days by 7
Pick two dates and subtract the earlier one from the later one. That gives a count of calendar days, and dividing by 7 turns the days into weeks. January 1 to October 22, 2026 is 294 days, and 294 / 7 = 42, so the span is exactly 42 weeks with no days left over.
Most spans do leave a remainder, and the remainder is the part people drop. A span of 90 days is 12 weeks and 6 days, not 13 weeks. A job that needs 12 weeks and 6 days does not fit a 12 week window, so keeping the leftover days changes the answer to a planning question.
| Days between | Whole weeks | Leftover days | Decimal weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 1 | 0 | 1.00 |
| 30 | 4 | 2 | 4.29 |
| 84 | 12 | 0 | 12.00 |
| 90 | 12 | 6 | 12.86 |
| 182 | 26 | 0 | 26.00 |
| 294 | 42 | 0 | 42.00 |
| 365 | 52 | 1 | 52.14 |
The count runs from the start date up to, but not including, the end date. The same date twice gives 0 days, and a Monday to the following Monday gives exactly 7 days. If you need both ends counted, add 1 day before you divide, and say which convention you used.
Why a year works out to 52.1775 weeks
The Gregorian calendar averages 365.2425 days per year once leap years are spread across the 400 year cycle. Divide that by 7 and the result is 52.1775 weeks in a year. A common year of 365 days holds 52 weeks plus 1 day, and a leap year of 366 days holds 52 weeks plus 2 days.
That leftover day is why a birthday, a rent due date or a weekly meeting lands on a different weekday each year. It is also why a 53 week year appears now and then. An ISO year has 53 weeks when January 1 falls on a Thursday, or when it falls on a Wednesday in a leap year. About one year in six runs 53 weeks, which is 71 years out of every 400.
| Year | January 1 falls on | ISO weeks | Days in the year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Monday | 52 | 366 |
| 2025 | Wednesday | 52 | 365 |
| 2026 | Thursday | 53 | 365 |
| 2027 | Friday | 52 | 365 |
| 2028 | Saturday | 52 | 366 |
| 2029 | Monday | 52 | 365 |
| 2030 | Tuesday | 52 | 365 |
The calendar rule itself sits with the standard, and the clock is a separate system. NIST's time and frequency division maintains the official time scale for the United States, and time.gov shows the official clock that the two national labs publish together. Neither one changes the length of a year or the number of weeks in it.
ISO week numbering: week 1 owns the first Thursday
ISO 8601 defines a week as seven days starting on Monday and numbers week 1 as the week that contains January 4, which is the same as the week that holds the first Thursday of the year. The ISO week year is built from whole weeks, so it starts on a Monday, ends on a Sunday, and does not line up with January 1.
The result is that a few days at each end of the calendar year carry a week number from the other year. In 2026, which has 53 ISO weeks, December 28 is a Monday and starts week 53 of 2026, so January 1 and January 2 of 2027 still belong to week 53 of 2026. Week 1 of 2027 begins on Monday, January 4.
| Date | Weekday | ISO week | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 1, 2026 | Thursday | Week 1 of 2026 | Its week runs December 29 to January 4 |
| October 22, 2026 | Thursday | Week 43 of 2026 | 42 completed weeks after week 1 |
| December 31, 2026 | Thursday | Week 53 of 2026 | 2026 is a 53 week ISO year |
| January 1, 2027 | Friday | Week 53 of 2026 | The week began on December 28, 2026 |
| January 4, 2027 | Monday | Week 1 of 2027 | Week holds Thursday, January 7 |
Payroll and reporting software can disagree at that boundary without either one being wrong. A report labelled by calendar year splits the week of December 28 across two files, and a report labelled by ISO week keeps it in one piece. When two weekly reports do not match at the end of December, check which numbering each one uses before hunting for a data error.
Adding and subtracting weeks keeps the weekday
A week is exactly seven days, so adding or subtracting whole weeks moves the date and never the weekday. October 22, 2026 is a Thursday, and every whole number of weeks from it is also a Thursday. That property is why weekly meetings, rent, subscription renewals and payroll cycles stay on the same day of the week.
| Change from October 22, 2026 | Days moved | Result | Weekday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add 1 week | 7 | October 29, 2026 | Thursday |
| Add 4 weeks | 28 | November 19, 2026 | Thursday |
| Add 12 weeks | 84 | January 14, 2027 | Thursday |
| Add 18 weeks | 126 | February 25, 2027 | Thursday |
| Add 26 weeks | 182 | April 22, 2027 | Thursday |
| Subtract 6 weeks | 42 | September 10, 2026 | Thursday |
Months do not behave that way. A monthly renewal on the 31st disappears in February, while a 28 day cycle does not. When a schedule has to stay on the same weekday, count in weeks and convert to days at the end. When the schedule has to stay on the same date number, count in months and accept that the weekday moves.
Subtracting weeks is the same arithmetic with a minus sign, which is handy for deadlines and notice periods. Six weeks before October 22, 2026 is September 10, 2026, so a 42 day notice period that ends on October 22 had to start on that Thursday.
Weeks to days, months and pay periods
One month averages 4.35 weeks, because 365.2425 / 12 = 30.44 days and 30.44 / 7 = 4.35. That average is why 4 weeks is not a month. Four weeks is 28 days, about 0.92 of an average month, and the gap adds up to more than 3 days a year.
| Weeks | Days | Average months | Where the number shows up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 14 | 0.46 | One biweekly pay period |
| 4 | 28 | 0.92 | A four week billing cycle |
| 13 | 91 | 2.99 | One quarter, near enough |
| 26 | 182 | 5.98 | Half a year, or 26 paychecks |
| 52 | 364 | 11.96 | A year of weekly paychecks |
Pay periods are where weeks and months collide. Weekly pay gives 52 checks in a year, and 52 x 7 = 364 days, so the payday drifts by a day or two against the calendar. Biweekly pay gives 26 checks, and 26 x 14 = 364 days, which leaves the same drift. Semimonthly pay gives 24 checks and follows the calendar instead of the week, so a semimonthly check is not half of a biweekly check.
The 52 week year is also the unit behind savings plans. Putting away $50 a week for 52 weeks is $2,600, while the same habit measured over 52.1775 weeks would be $2,608.88. The difference is small, but it explains why a 52 week challenge finishes a day or two before the calendar year ends.
Worked example: an 18 week job from October 22, 2026
A contractor signs an 18 week job on Thursday, October 22, 2026 and wants the finish date. 18 x 7 = 126 days, and 126 days after October 22 is February 25, 2027. The result is a Thursday, the same weekday as the start, and the span crosses New Year and the end of daylight saving without any adjustment.
Working time is smaller than calendar time. The 126 days hold 90 weekdays and 36 weekend days, because 18 whole weeks always hold 18 x 5 = 90 weekdays. Take out five holidays inside the window and 85 working days remain. At 8 hours a day that is 85 x 8 = 680 hours, or 17 weeks of a 40 hour week, which is the number to put against a labor estimate built on 40 hour weeks.
Week numbers keep the report readable. October 22, 2026 sits in week 43 of 2026 and February 25, 2027 sits in week 8 of 2027, so a schedule summary written as week 43 to week 8 is clear to anyone using ISO numbering and confusing to anyone counting from January 1.
If the job slips, the weekday check is instant. Moving the finish by 3 weeks lands on Thursday, March 18, 2027, and moving it by 3 months lands on May 25, 2027, a Tuesday, which is why week based schedules survive a slip better than month based ones.
Calendar days, not clock hours: daylight saving and leap years
Every count on this page uses calendar dates, not clock time. The day a clock jumps forward is still one calendar day, and a span that crosses a spring transition is not 23 hours short here. Software that subtracts timestamps instead of dates does hit that problem, which is one reason date arithmetic belongs in a date type.
Leap years add a day, and that day can change a weekday count. February 29, 2028 is a Tuesday, so a span that includes it gains a weekday, and a 52 week count that starts on January 1, 2028 ends on December 30 rather than December 31. The leap rule is divisible by 4, except centuries, unless divisible by 400, so 2000 was a leap year and 2100 will not be.
Leap seconds are a separate matter. NIST adjusts UTC by leap seconds so that clock time stays close to the rotation of the Earth, and those adjustments change seconds, not the number of calendar days between two dates. A count of weeks does not care how many seconds a day contained.
Time zone offsets cancel out for the same reason. A date typed as 2026-10-22 is a label on a calendar, not an instant, so counting from that label to another label gives the same answer whether the reader sits in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles.
How this page compares with the other week and date tools
This page answers the unit question: how many weeks a stretch of time holds, how many weeks a year holds, and what a week count looks like in days, months and pay periods. The week calculator measures one span between two dates and reports the ISO week at each end. The week number page for 2026 answers the narrower question of which ISO week a given 2026 date falls in, and the day of the week calculator returns the weekday of a single date or lists every date in a month that lands on a chosen weekday.
Use days between dates when days are the unit you need, months between dates when the span crosses months and you want calendar months instead of 4.35 week averages, and add days to date when you are moving a date by a fixed number of days rather than whole weeks.
The practical rule is simple. Count in weeks when the schedule repeats weekly or when the weekday has to stay fixed, and count in days when the deadline is a date printed on a contract. If a lease says 12 months, a week count will be about 52.18 weeks, which is not the same thing as 52 weeks, and that quarter of a week is enough to shift a move out date by two days.
Frequently asked questions
How many weeks are between January 1 and October 22, 2026?
294 days, which is exactly 42 weeks with no leftover days. The span holds 210 weekdays and 84 weekend days. October 22, 2026 is a Thursday and sits in ISO week 43 of 2026.
How many weeks are in a year?
52.1775 weeks on average, because a Gregorian year averages 365.2425 days and 365.2425 / 7 = 52.1775. A common year is 52 weeks plus 1 day, and a leap year is 52 weeks plus 2 days.
Which years have 53 weeks?
Years that start on a Thursday, plus leap years that start on a Wednesday. 2026 starts on a Thursday and has 53 ISO weeks, 2020 started on a Wednesday in a leap year and also had 53, and 2027 has 52.
How many weeks is 90 days?
12 weeks and 6 days. 90 / 7 = 12.857, so 12 full weeks plus a 6 day remainder, which is one day short of 13 weeks.
Is 4 weeks the same as a month?
No. Four weeks is 28 days, about 0.92 of an average 30.44 day month. A month averages 4.35 weeks, so 12 weeks is about 2.76 months rather than 3 months.
How many weeks is 6 months?
About 26 weeks, since 6 x 4.348 = 26.09. Half of 52.1775 is 26.09, so six calendar months run a couple of days past 26 weeks.
What date is 12 weeks after January 1, 2026?
March 26, 2026. Twelve weeks is 84 days, and the result is a Thursday, the same weekday as January 1, 2026.
How many paychecks are in a year?
52 with weekly pay and 26 with biweekly pay, because 52 x 7 = 364 days and 26 x 14 = 364 days. Semimonthly pay gives 24 checks and follows the calendar instead of the week.
How many weeks is a 40 week span?
280 days. Forty weeks is 40 x 7 = 280, which is about 9.2 average months, and it holds 200 weekdays and 80 weekend days if the span starts on a Monday.
Do you count the start date and the end date?
The count is end minus start, so the start date counts and the end date does not. The same date twice gives 0 days, and a Monday to the following Monday gives 7 days.
What ISO week is October 22, 2026?
Week 43 of 2026. Week 1 of 2026 began on Monday, December 29, 2025, and October 22 is 42 weeks after the start of that week.
Why does an ISO week start on Monday?
ISO 8601 sets Monday as the first day of the week and week 1 as the week containing January 4. United States calendars often print Sunday first, which shifts the printed week number by one for dates from Sunday to Monday.
How many weekdays are in 42 weeks?
210 if the span starts on a Monday and holds no holidays, because 42 x 5 = 210. The same 42 weeks hold 84 weekend days, and 210 + 84 = 294 days.
How many weeks are in 2026?
53 ISO weeks. January 1, 2026 is a Thursday, so week 1 starts on December 29, 2025 and week 53 ends on January 3, 2027.
