Car costs hide in plain sight. Gas is the obvious one, but insurance, tires, maintenance and depreciation add up faster, and towing limits are the thing people discover too late. These calculators put a number on what your car costs to run and what it can safely pull.

What a mile costs

Fuel cost per mile is one division: price per gallon divided by MPG. At $3.50 a gallon and 30 MPG that is 11.7 cents a mile, so a 250-mile trip burns $29.18 of gas. The full cost per mile is larger, because it includes everything else. A paid-off sedan driven 12,000 miles a year at $3.50 gas, with insurance, maintenance, tires, registration and depreciation, comes to $7,150 a year, or about 60 cents a mile. That is the figure to compare when you weigh a new car against the one you own.

Check the payload sticker before you shop for a trailer, not after.
