Streaming income is easy to misread, because what a viewer spends and what a creator keeps are two different numbers. This category does the payout math, starting with the most common question of all: how much is a Bit worth.
Bits: one cent, every time
A single Bit is worth exactly $0.01 to the streamer, no matter which pack the viewer bought. That flat rate is the anchor for everything else: 100 Bits is $1, 1,000 Bits is $10, and 10,000 Bits is $100. Viewers pay more than a cent per Bit, though. A 100-Bit pack costs about $1.40, so the viewer pays $0.0140 per Bit while the channel still receives the full cent. Twitch takes its share out of the purchase price, not out of the creator's side, which is why the creator's number never changes with pack size.
Bits against subscriptions
Subscriptions usually earn more over a month because they renew. On the standard 50/50 split a Tier 1 sub pays the streamer about $3.00, which is the same as 300 Bits, but the sub repeats every month. Run the numbers for a channel with 50 Tier 1 subs and 5,000 Bits cheered in a month:
- At 50/50: subs earn $149.75 and Bits add $50.00, for a total of $199.75.
- At a 70% split: the same subs earn $209.65 and Bits still add $50.00, for $259.65.
The split only moves the subscription line. Payouts are issued on a Net-15 schedule and only once the balance clears $50, so a good week can still sit unpaid until the next month.
