Kitchen math is mostly about units that do not divide evenly. A recipe written for a crowd does not halve cleanly when it calls for 1/3 cup or a single egg, and a holiday ham gives no clue how long it should stay in the oven. These tools handle the fractions and the timing so you can cook without second-guessing.

Halving without the headache

The whole trick is to drop to a smaller unit first. One cup is 16 tablespoons and 48 teaspoons, so half of 1/2 cup is 1/4 cup, which is 4 tablespoons, 12 teaspoons or about 59 milliliters. Half of 3/4 cup is 6 tablespoons. Half of 1/3 cup is 8 teaspoons, and half of 2/3 cup is 5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon.

Check the internal temperature rather than trusting the clock, because a dial set to 325 F often runs 20 to 40 degrees off.
