Two small utilities cover a lot of daily developer work: making a password that resists guessing and turning a link into a scannable code. Both run entirely in your browser with no account and no server in the middle, which matters when the thing you are generating is a secret.
Passwords: length beats clever tricks
Strength comes from entropy, which is how long the password is multiplied by how many characters it could have been drawn from. Length matters more than symbols. Holding the character pool fixed at 82, an 8-character password carries about 51 bits and is too short, while a 16-character one carries about 102 bits and is strong. Six random words from a list of 7,776 give about 77 bits and are far easier to remember. The generator uses the browser's Web Crypto API rather than Math.random, because the ordinary random function is predictable and a password built from it is not truly random no matter how long it is.
QR codes that scan the first time
- Error correction: level H recovers up to 30% damage and suits a code on a printed flyer, while level L holds more data and suits a clean screen.
- Size: version 1 is a 21 by 21 grid, and each version adds four modules per side up to version 40 at 177 by 177.
- Quiet zone: leave four blank modules around the code, or many scanners will not lock on.
- Permanent: these are static codes with the content baked in, so they never expire and no server can switch them off.
Test a code on two phones before you print a thousand of them.
