Home projects go wrong at the checkout more often than at the workbench. Buy too little stain and you make a second trip mid job, where the color may not match. Buy too much concrete and you are storing 80-pound bags in the garage for years. These calculators turn your measurements into the amount to buy before you leave the store.

Why the label coverage number misleads

Every gallon of stain prints a coverage figure that assumes smooth, dry wood and a thin coat. A real deck is rough and gray and drinks more. A semi-transparent stain claims 250 square feet per gallon on smooth wood, drops to about 225 on weathered wood, and falls to 175 on new pressure-treated lumber. A 12 by 16 foot deck is 192 square feet of floor, plus about 40 square feet for railing and 20 for steps, so 252 square feet over two coats on weathered wood is closer to 2.5 gallons than the 2 the label suggests.

Add a small cushion for waste, then buy one extra unit you can return. It beats running short.
